More info: the new GUI doesn't correctly toggle gconf/system/http_proxy/use_http_proxy to true when only a socks server is specified. Without this, neither Chrome nor Firefox will attempt to tunnel through socks. As a workaround, set this value manually using gconf-editor. [Bug 873808] [NEW] brightness applet needs to support nvidia_backlight
Public bug reported: There is a popular third-party backlight driver for Nvidia GPUs that are not supported by the manufacturers backlight driver, known as nvidiabl (or nvidia_backlight). See https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl for more information. This is not the same driver as nv_backlight. In order for this driver to be recognized by the brightness applet, nvidia_backlight needs to be added to the top of the vendor array in gsd-backlight-helper so that it looks like this: /* available kernel interfaces in priority order */ static const gchar *backlight_interfaces[] = { "nvidia_backlight", "nv_backlight", "asus_laptop", "toshiba", "eeepc", "thinkpad_screen", "acpi_video1", "mbp_backlight", "acpi_video0", "fujitsu-laptop", "sony", "samsung", NULL, }; nvidia_backlight needs to be placed at the top of the list because the non-functioning vendor module (sony, in my case) is still present in /sys/class/backlight, so nvidia_backlight needs to be recognized before sony. ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873808 Title: brightness applet needs to support nvidia_backlight To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/873808/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 873763] [NEW] menubar settings for new terminals are ignored in gnome-shell
Public bug reported: In gnome-terminal settings, I always disable the "Show menubar by default in new terminals" option. This seems better ignored in Unity since it has its global menu anyway. But this option should not be ignored in gnome-shell, which it seems to be. I disable the option, open new terminals, but the menubar is visible! In the View menu, the "Show Menubar" option is unchecked. I have to *check* that option in the View menu, then *uncheck* it to finally get rid of the menubar in a terminal. If the option is *enabled*, then the option is *checked* in the View menu for new terminals. ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873763 Title: menubar settings for new terminals are ignored in gnome-shell To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/873763/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off
I can't believe this is another 5+ year old bug that is still unresolved. I am experiencing this issue on Ubuntu/Xubuntu 11.04. The problem is that somehow dpms calls are being made to turn the backlight back on when a mouse event occurs, even though the lid is still shut. I ran into some difficulty because the Ubuntu acpi-support scripts don't run if they detect a desktop (gnome/kde/xfce/etc) power-manager app running. It's a pain to have to kill those, because I lose all GUI-based power management (battery indicator, etc.) on my laptop. However, I got so fed up with this issue that I felt it was worth it to block the power-manager app so that acpid could run the show. In the end, the best solution I could find was to run lid.sh on a 1-minute recurring cron job. This forces the backlight off when the lid is closed and on when it's open. Not a very elegant solution, but at least I won't have to worry about burning out my laptop's monitor any more. Also vbetool did not work for me. Specifically, it was able to turn off the backlight, but was not able to turn it back on. After using vbetool to turn off the backlight, I had to switch to a text console and back to get the backlight to come back on! ** Also affects: xfce4-power-manager Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41994 Title: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/41994/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 873470] Re: File-roller is associated with .docx files instead of LibreOffice
Funnily enough on older Ubuntu releases : this file is correctly associated with libreoffice/openoffice AND it can be successfully opened with file-roller (as docx files are zip files). [Bug 533109] Re: Icon missing for notification flash when indicator applet isn't used.
This bug still exists in Oneiric 11.10. Along with other icons, notably the Zoom In/Out and Normal Size in the Nautilus View menu. Going on two years without packaging these icons and it would be nice if they were included. Public bug reported: It's almost possible to use GStreamer from PyGI. The hang up is that currently you can't get EOS signals from a pipeline, and that the message bus is overall broken. As far as I know, this is because pygobject doesn't grok the GstMiniObject type, which mean Gst.Message is an unknown type. There is an upstream bug with a patch (work in progress): https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631901 I'm not sure if this would be too invasive a change to deliver to Oneiric users through a SRU, but this would help smooth the transition to PyGI (and possibly only shipping Python3 on the CD) for Precise as app devs could be working with PyGI and GStreamer right now on Oneiric. For what it's worth, this would really help Novacut. Either way, lets make sure PyGI + GStreamer rocks in Precise! (Side note: this also raises a question... GStreamer 0.10 or 1.0 in Precise?) [Bug 873712] Re: Lack of GstMiniObject means Gst.Message is broken, can't get EOS signal
I consider this a good test case for this bug. Same problem whether you use Python2 or Python3 (but for Novacut, we care about Python3). [Bug 873677] Re: nautilus quits when opening folders
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873677 Title: nautilus quits when opening folders To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/873677/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
