[Bug 885939] [NEW] notify-osd causes the gnome classic session to fail
Public bug reported: I have noticed several other users that are having this issue as well in in Ubuntu 11.10. Most of these users believe they are running the gnome classic session and that compiz failed to start. The fact is that notify-osd is causing the gnome-classic session to fail entirely, and the gnome-fallback session is loaded instead (which of course does not load compiz). The gnome-classic session works fine after removing notify-osd from the RequiredProviders line of the file /usr/share/gnome- session/sessions/gnome-classic.session. It should be noted that notify- osd still starts after removing it from the RequiredProviders, and seems to still be working. [Bug 885592] Re: No "parent folder" button
Clicking breadcrumbs is a poor workaround for such an often used activity. First, most of time the parent breadcrumb is hidden, so you first need to click the reveal button before the parent button even shows up. This essentially doubles the number of clicks to navigate to the parent. Furthermore, the parent breadcrumb moves around, and isn't always in the same location. This also slows down up-navigation. Lack of a true parent-button is a huge step backwards in productivity. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/885592 Title: No "parent folder" button To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/885592/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 885923] [NEW] Laptop goes into hibernate immediately after resuming from standby
Public bug reported: On my laptop, most of the times I resume from standby (i.e. suspend to RAM), the system will display a dialog box stating that my system is very low on battery and that it will hibernate (i.e. suspend to disk), which it does a few seconds later, even if I don't press Ok or Cancel on the dialog box. [Bug 885913] [NEW] Arrow keys navigation broken since upgrade to 11.10
Public bug reported: Since the upgrade of Ubuntu from 11.04 to 11.10, navigating with the arrow keys in nautilus has become much harder than it used to be since it's no longer possible to use the right/left keys to navigate through all the files. E.g. in icon view when selecting the first file in a row and pressing the right arrow to go through all the files in that row, when the last file in the row is selected, pressing right arrow key again doesn't select the first file in the bottom row. Steps to reproduce: 1) Set nautilus to icon view 2) Open a folder with enough files to display several rows of icons 3) Select the top left icon in the navigation panel 4) Press and hold the right arrow key Expected results: - Upon reaching the last icon in the row, the selection advances to the leftmost icon in the row below the current one Actual results: - The selection is stuck on the rightmost icon of the current row This causes great unnecessary effort to select files sequentially, as now I have to press down when reaching the last icon in a row, and then press the left key a great number of times, or keep it pressed. [Bug 843268] Re: gnome-control-center doesn't allow to specify proxy exceptions
A good start would be a bug database(perhaps a tag in launchpad and bugs.d.o) with perhaps a wiki that would outline the current status and issues with running behind a proxy. The main goal would help /new/ users in the trial and error department with a secondary goal to identify how much work would be involved and where assistance is needed. I should point out that at this time I'm no-longer behind a proxy, however I am behind a NAT and this presents some of the same issues with regard to how to establish in-bound connections. One question is to decide is weather to include UPnP as a sort of proxy as it is a tool that applications interested in creating network sockets may need to be configured to use. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/843268 Title: gnome-control-center doesn't allow to specify proxy exceptions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/843268/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 877556] Re: Calculation of Battery Power Consumsion was Mistake
I've had this problem since 10.10. (Now on 11.10). It was just annoying up to this point, but gnome3 only lets you hibernate or shutdown for critical battery. If I had to wager, I'd say the problem has to do with using the battery remaning charge divided by the battery *designed* full capacity, not the battery present full capacity. Batteries lose maximum charge hold over time. My laptop is about 1.5 years old, and 'lshal | grep battery' yields this: battery.charge_level.design = 62160 battery.charge_level.last_full = 31646 When I get to about 40-50% of possible charge (maybe ~14000 in units from above) the battery warnings start coming. I usually have 30 - 40 minutes (get about an hour and some change on a full charge). 14000/31646 = 40%. But if the *designed* capacity were used instead 14000/62160 = 22%, now we starting to get towards warning territory. I can use the battery down until the hardware warning comes on ok, but if i suspend and wake it with the battery at 50% (roughly) or lower, it will immediately hibernate. I can then restore it, and it runs fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877556 Title: Calculation of Battery Power Consumsion was Mistake To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/877556/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 885832] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes when I close and re-open my laptop
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Re: [Bug 567029] Re: Login failure loop with Ubuntu 10.04
Tony, I apologize that my skills in this area are nigh nil. I will forward this to a friend (nalioth) that is very helpful. you may find him in an ubuntu help chat. when he responds - i will send it to you and that will be more likely to help than my following postulations. If you don't hear back soon enough - here is my two cents... What I would do, having looked at page 29 in the attached tech data - they point out in the book the setting is not configurable. is see if updating the VGA bios, if not System BIOS would be a good idea. I noticed also a multi-display setting/utility that probably never intended to stand behind an open-source OS, so an update probably won't help this issue. If I get down to updating BIOS - I just figure it is out of date and replace. As illustrated below - very little is accomplished in the time (over a year) taken to brute force investigate an annoyance if I can get around the issue and on with using my computer. my experience with this bug was that I was beat. After experimenting with BIOS settings one setting at a time and hoping I did not have to try changing two settings at a time (and back again), once I found the problem, I tried "just one more" setting that totally blanked the screen (zero VGA share memory size). I was so blindy furious I just built a new system. I had learned so much from what didn't work. I forgot something simple like removing the CMOS battery resets the BIOS. I opted instead for shoving it into another case for a little child genius that loved the experience and made a new system for 400USD in parts. Word to the wise - make sure that if your new motherboard has a separate CPU power header, that your power supply has that connector, or at least the adapter. Gosh darn those guys at Fry's. Now running ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. Then I remembered the CMOS battery remove and count to 10 (sage advice there) install new battery. I set everything back and upgraded to 11.04 and then 11.10 and everything worked with the maximum VGA memory share. Hopefully you can hold out til I get aholta nalioth. [Bug 885832] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crashes when I close and re-open my laptop
Public bug reported: When I close my laptop lid and re-open, gnome-settings-daemon segfaults. I saw similar bugs filed, but on much older versions of this software, so sorry if this is a dupe. When this service crashes I get an odd icon set and my terminals go from a black background to a grey one. I don't have another system to ssh into this one with so I cannot tell whether the crash occurs when I close the lid or when I re-open it. I have a fresh install of 11.10 with the most recent updates applied. [Bug 843268] Re: gnome-control-center doesn't allow to specify proxy exceptions
I don't seem to even have a manual workaround. gconf-editor and dconf-editor both seem to access similar (but not identical?) things, neither of which is the same as what I get with System Settings->Network->Network proxy (which is to say, I can change the settings in any of the Ubuntu settings menu, dconf-editor, or gconf-editor, but the changes aren't always reflected in the other two, and only the Ubuntu menu seems to actually control what my web browser does.) So, is there still a way to ignore hosts in 11.10 that works? I've tried changing settings, restarting the browser, restarting network manager, rebooting... and I still haven't found a way to make the web proxy ignore specific hosts.

[Bug 885804] [NEW] "Always on Visible Workspace" lost intermittently...
Public bug reported: It looks like when I tell an Empathy window to stay visible on all workspaces, the instruction is sometimes lost. My best guess would be whenever a new tab is added. It would be nice if this setting would stop being forgotten every time I add a chat as it's forcing me to re-pin the window each time. Also what would be nice would be if pinned windows retained their pinning preference after being closed for when they next open. Part bug, part feature. But definitely a bug. [Bug 843268] Re: gnome-control-center doesn't allow to specify proxy exceptions
The proxy settings were working fine before, but the latest changes have caused nothing but grief. First was the issue of just finding the new proxy setting GUI, since searching for "proxy" from the launcher or in System Settings doesn't work. Then I've had to manually set the proxy settings for Apt. Pidgin and Empathy still don't work over a proxy for me. Now it's this issue with having to jump through hoops just to set exceptions. It's not even clear how are the changes supposed to be an improvement instead of just a regression. Ubuntu should not accept ill- considered changes from upstream. I won't be recommending Ubuntu to anyone anymore, since it can't be trusted no to regress long-standing and important functionality in recommended updates.
