[Bug 914665] [NEW] window hash table not created until screen_get is called

I've found this bug using the wnck python bindings (python-wnck)
package, but the actual problem is in the libwnck library.
I have python code where I have a list of X11 window IDs from an
independant source. I want to get a Wnck window from these Ids. In
poython, doing this:
window = wnck.window_get(my_xwindow_id)
does not work (window_get returns None) until i call
wnck.screen_get_default(). This is because the window_hash table does
not get build until a screen is accessed.
libwnck./window.c lines 470-477 look like this:

if (window_hash == NULL)
return NULL;
else
return g_hash_table_lookup (window_hash, xwindow);
}
A possible fix would be to build the window_hash if it doesn't exist.

This IMHO is not a low priority, it's not just renaming files! It's even selecting them that is a problem. I use List view a lot and either when the window is half-screen width or more often when using the Extra Pane (where each pane is thus narrower), the 'status' bar pops up over the last entry almost every time. I know the 'status' tries to hop to the other side of the pane to allow this kind of thing, but that is seldom triggered or fixes the problem. If anything is selected, the only way to select the last file is to unselect all files with Ctrl-click then the 'status' is out of the way so the last file can be selected. [Bug 914685] [NEW] Screen only partially updates
Public bug reported: I have had this issue numerous times in gnome-terminal, but it's intermittent, can be reproduced but not reliably. When fast moving updates are made to the terminal window, sometimes it doesn't update at all. I have observed:- * Terminal still showing old content (for example when switching from one irc channel to another when using irssi inside gnu screen) * Terminal only updating partitally (a percentage of the screen draws (from top to bottom) some of the screen updates and then stops part way down) * Square regions of terminal update (a small block might update but the rest of the screen doesn't) In most of these I can 'force' an update of the screen (for example in irssi/screen I can press CTRL+L to force update). This isn't limited to irssi/screen, it can happen if I just start a terminal and run 'ls -l'. I cannot reproduce the behaviour in xterm. It's difficult to get screenshots or photos of this happening because when it happens, soon after it will update the screen. Starting apps (like screenshot apps) will force the update. You have been subscribed to a public bug: This might be related to bug #525038. When starting up, the screen goes black (actually it looks like the backlight is not on) either instantly when plymouth starts or a few seconds after. The login screen appears, I typed my password and the screen is still black after logging in. However, if I press F2 (decrease brightness) or F3 (increase brightness), not Fn + F2 or F3, then the display will come back on instantly. If I increase the brightness to its maximum setting and then decrease the brightness to the minimum setting using F2 F3 respectively, I get the same effect when plymouth starts (no backlight). The brightness indicator that ubuntu shows when adjusting the brightness gives me only four levels going from 100% to 0%: 0 = 100% Brightness 1 = 60% Brightness 2 = 15% Brightness 3 = No backlight; and 3 levels when going from 0% to 100% 0 = 40% 1 = 80% 2 = 100% That's all the info I can give for now. If I wanted to get the Fn key working what package would I report that against? [Test Case]
1. Set up two monitors side by side
2. Set left monitor to a smaller vertical resolution than the right monitor
3. for i in $(seq 1 50) ; do touch file-${i} ; done
4. Right click on desktop to bring up context menu, then 'Organize Desktop by
Name'
5. Should be: All icons from file-1 to file-50 (or as many fit on the screen)
should be visible
Is: Icons for files at the top and/or bottom of the arranged columns are
not visible on any display
6. xrandr --output LVDS1 --off
7. Verify icons are arranged properly on the external monitor
8. Set up monitors one over the other
9. Verify icons are displayed in long columns spanning both displays with all
icons shown

while this long standing problem has been mitigated with some previous work and
patches (eg: #389519) at least keeping the mouse away from the dead area, the
desktop behaviour is far from being precise still.
when using a couple of monitors with different vertical resolution,
icons can easily get lost on the shortest monitor, to reproduce the bug
just put on the shortest monitor enough icons to exceed a single
column, click on the desktop with the right mouse button and then
organize desktop by name.
another issue is with compiz corner hotspots bindings, they are never
triggered if there's a dead area above or below them, it depends on
where your shortest display is aligned in respect of the tallest (top or
bottom margin), to reproduce try for example to bind the Show Desktop
action on a corner of the shortest display.

I see the same behaviour under 11.10 with my external monitor connected to the VGA port of my Lenovo x200. If I disable the laptop display I get a scrambled external monitor screen. I have landed a sanitized helper ubuntu abstraction upstream that should work for python and mmaping user owned files which is tested to work with evince and the new QRT environment filtering tests in test- apparmor.py. This is a workaround until proper environment filtering can be implemented in AppArmor which will not land in time for 12.04. Unfortunately, these changes are pretty intrusive and I don't think we should SRU this into 11.10 or earlier. [Bug 914889] [NEW] F1 - Help / yelp / ghelp is looping, Ubuntu 11.10
Public bug reported: Help (F1) screen from GNOME Terminal is blank, no documentation to select and when canceling Help another blank sreen pops up within a second and this goes on and on forever, untill a reboot. This creates an additional problem: When installing Ubuntu, the user is offered to encrypt his personal folder; but when adding new users after installation, no choose between encrypting or not is offered.
