[Bug 740818] Re: Can't set Keyboard layout at installation and later on
I've identified the exact same problem on two systems which are using Intel-based GPUs (82Q35). So this bug cannot be related to the graphics driver. It also occurs with the most recent version of Linux Mint (9); which uses version 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 of the gnome-settings-daemon. Other non- Ubuntu distros such as Sabayon using Gnome2 and the MATE desktop (fork of Gnome2) also experiences the same issue. It can be easily reproduced by booting up a live-USB/CD logging in and modifying the keyboard layout. Adding a new layout does not affect anything (even though the keyboard viewer correctly identifies the keys being pressed). I.e, the layout is working it is just not made effective. When subequently logging out and back in again the problem is resolved. However, it can be triggered again by adding (or moving to the top) the U.S layout again. What is interesting–and why I am sure this is a bug in Gnome and not some esoteric bug which originated elsewhere – is when it is using the wrong layout (producing the wrong keys regardless of which keymap is actually supposed to be active), selecting U.S layout (as opposed to layout #2) makes it use the correct one. Let me repeat that – you have two layouts active in keyboard layout, your internationalized layout can be at the top (does not matter) but when switching layouts in the applet the two are switched around. I've verified this several times. Clearly this is a UI bug. So again, if this bug somehow is not related to gsd then at least point users in the right direction. Having a working keyboard layout is one of the most *basic* things for an operating system, yet this is set to importance: low and status: invalid. Hardly a good way to treat your users, wouldn't you agree? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740818 Title: Can't set Keyboard layout at installation and later on To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/740818/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Hardly a good way to treat your users, wouldn't you agree? sure, bottom line is that thousand of desktop bug are open every day and there are 10 people looking at those, it means hundred of bugs by volunteer (you don't pay anything for Ubuntu) every single day of the year (it doesn't stop during weekend or holidays), so yes sure, we don't spend as much time on every single ticket that we would like and we tend to close the ones not well described or confusing because we just can't spent 1 hour trying to understand each, there are not 100 hours in a day... feel free to blame us for it, not a lot we can change though (out of ignoring bugs and letting the bug tracker become unusable) anyway to go back to the topic, feel free to open a bug using ubuntu- bug gnome-settings-daemon (that's important because the tools provide lot of infos on exact versions etc that you didn't provide), also try to have an easy description of the issue, e.g: - install ubuntu 11.04 in swedish - reboot - log into unity - go to system settings, layout - add an us layout - log out - log back in - type in gedit and see what layout is in use you got the idea, easy steps that we can follow, it's just too hard to read the comment on this bug which mix configs, distro, video drivers and other parameters -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740818 Title: Can't set Keyboard layout at installation and later on To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/740818/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1019845] Re: Nautilus crashes when moving/cut-paste/drag-drop 1 file or folder
The problem has been identified in the greek nautilus translation. Some special characters where not translated correctly. No. 236, was missing a %'d 236. English: Moving file %'d of %'d (in %B) to %B Current Greek: Μεταφορά %'d από (από το %B) στο %B No. 239, the %'d was right after a word 239. English:Moving file %'d of %'d to %B Current Greek: Μεταφορά αρχείου%'d από %'d στο %B After contacting the Ubuntu Greek Translator team a corrected translation of the above strings was suggested and approved. Then i tested it by generating a local copy with msgfmt nautilus.po -o nautilus.mo, and overwriting the current translation file at: /usr/share/locale-langpack/el/LC_MESSAGES/ I have tested this in 2 different PC's (one with Ubuntu 12.04/Unity, and one with Xubuntu 12.04 with nautilus) which where affected by this problem an it seems that there is no crash anymore. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1019845 Title: Nautilus crashes when moving/cut-paste/drag-drop 1 file or folder To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1019845/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1023459] Re: Tabbed dialogs in System Settings with one tab should hide the tab bar
** Description changed: The dialogs in System Settings should not show the tab bar when there's only one tab available, even if the dialog is expandable and can show - more than one tab. This is the case with the Mouse and Touchpad applet + more than one tab. This is the case with the Mouse and Touchpad dialog in System Settings, for example, where if there is only a mouse available and no touchpad, there's only one tab shown, which honestly doesn't look nice, in my opinion. [Bug 1023622] [NEW] Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running
Public bug reported: My system: Distribution: Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit Codename: Natty Narwhal Desktop: Gnome 2 CPU: Intel Quad Core 2 Extreme, X9650, 64Bit, (3GHz per core) GPU: GeForce 8800 GT GPU MEM: 512 MB GPU MEM Interface: 256 MB GPU VBIOS: 62.92.24.00.00 MoBo: Asus (Can't remember which one, too lazy to look it up, probably not important for this report) MoBo MEM: 4GB Description of the problem: My themes got screwed up, possibly form the installation of one of any of the following packages. All the Ubuntustudio packages I could find in synaptic were installed except for the Ubuntustudio desktop (I prefer Gnome 2). Desktop Geometry Switcher a.k.a. grandr 0.4.1 was added to the Gnome panel by right clicking on the Gnome panel and selecting Add to panel Compiz Fusion, with Grid enabled under Window Management Settings Latest release of LibreOffice 3.5 (a version not found in the package manager but a *.deb downloaded and installed from the maintainers website) Steps that first caused the problem after the above installations were completed: Left clicked on the Desktop Geometry Switcher icon and selected left. What was expected: That grandr would behave as it normally does and would ask me if the current display settings were correct, and that the display would be rotated 90 degrees in the counter-clockwise direction and that all would be well and fine with my currently chosen (customised) theme and icons. What happened instead: The display was immediately rotated 90 degrees in the counter-clockwise direction without any messages asking me if it was ok, and my chosen theme and icon set has been switched to some (painful to look at) default theme and icon set with no way to switch it back to what I had. Attempting to do anything theme related such as right clicking on the desktop and selecting Change Desktop Background results in the following error message: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits
Oops, I forgot that long outputs were not allowed. I'll attatch the debug outputs as log files. Attached to this post is the output of: sudo gnome-settings-daemon --debug --no-daemon Lots of debug info, then it just hangs and does nothing else on the last line. ** Attachment added: The output from sudo gnome-settings-daemon --debug --no-daemon https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/649809/+attachment/3220373/+files/gnome-settings-daemon_debug_with_sudo.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/649809 Title: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gdm/+bug/649809/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits
Attached to this post is the non-elevated privilege output: gnome-settings-daemon --debug --no-daemon This debug output basically said: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'. (Details: serial 193 error_code 2 request_code 154 minor_code 30) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Which I can't really understand. So... My Questions are: 1.) Can the status of this bug for Natty be changed to confirmed or something that more accurately reflects the problems I've shown with these posts? 2.) Is there anything I can uninstall, purge, or swap out with something else to help confirm which packages are effected? 3.) Has this bug become a permanent unsolvable problem in terms of getting themes to work in Natty again? I will attempt a reinstall of various Ubuntu releases to see if I can get this problem to go away. I'm out of idea's other than reinstalling. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/649809 Title: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gdm/+bug/649809/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
