[Bug 1071950] Re: gnome-settings-daemon dconf to gconf plugin causes settings to be lost

2012-10-26 Thread Margarita Manterola
This is my take on the issue from what I spoke with dsert earlier today:

There's a signal that dconf update emits when there are changes, so that
monitoring stuff can find out about it. This plugin is one of the
monitoring stuff.

The plugin is supposed to sync up settings from dconf to gconf for
programs that are not aware of gconf. I think it's wrongly copying
everything from dconf to gconf regardless of what the user had
previously modified. What it _should_ do is only copy the stuff that
comes from dconf but not what was modified directly in gconf. I suspect
this is not possible.

[Bug 1071950] Re: gnome-settings-daemon dconf to gconf plugin causes settings to be lost

2012-10-26 Thread Joel Ebel
Under what conditions would the gconf plugin for gsettings daemon
convert dconf settings into gconf? This is triggered by a dconf update
while a user is logged in, which seems a rare use case under normal
conditions. When is this plugin designed to operate normally, and could
that other normal operation cause this same issue?

[Bug 1071950] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon dconf to gconf plugin causes settings to be lost

2012-10-26 Thread Margarita Manterola
Public bug reported:

This was tested in a fresh installed precise machine, with the addition
of dconf and a particular dconf configuration.

Settings set in gconf backend get overwritten when running 'dconf
update'. This can be tested by changing any value in gconf to something
different than the default:

$ gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false
$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
false
$ gconftool --set /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode --type string sloppy
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode
sloppy

Then editing some file under /etc/dconf and running dconf update:

$ sudo vi /etc/dconf/db/site.d/screensaver
$ sudo dconf update
$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
true
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode
click

After talking about this with Ryan Lortie, he suggested disabling the
gnome-settings-daemon plugin:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.gconf active false
$ gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false
$ gconftool --set /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode --type string sloppy

$ sudo vi /etc/dconf/db/site.d/screensaver
$ sudo dconf update
$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
false
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode
sloppy

It looks like the gconf plugin is overwriting all the settings with the
defaults, thus losing anything the user had customized. It's quite
likely that a number of other bugs "Compiz loses my settings" are
actually caused by this plugin.

Also, as instructed by Ryan, I tried removing /usr/share/GConf/gsettings
/wm-schemas.convert and re-enabling the plugin, and then it doesn't
override any values that are related to the window manager but it does
override the one in the example:

$ gsettings reset org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.gconf active
$ gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.gconf active
true
$ gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false
$ gconftool --set /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode --type string sloppy

$ sudo vi /etc/dconf/db/site.d/screensaver
$ sudo dconf update
$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds
true
$ gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode
sloppy

So, focus_mode didn't get overwritten while event_sounds did.

One possible solution is to remove the wm-schemas so that compiz
settings don't get lost. A better (but probably harder) solution would
be to fix the plugin so that it doesn't overwrite what the user sets.
Maybe just remove the schemas that are being modified and stored in
gconf for Precise.

I found out that to reproduce in a fresh installed precise machine, I
had to set up some dconf files, then reboot, and then I could reproduce
consistently as explained here. I'm attaching a bunch of dconf files.
After unpacking, you need to run dconf update once to generate the db
and then reboot. After that it should be reproducible.

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2012-10-26 Thread Nico Zanferrari
I do confirm that this proposed patch resolves this nasty bug on
quantal. So, from my point of view, this is a big THANK YOU to all the
upstream developers and the smart Ubuntu guys!!!

Some notes (I always use a fresh standard live 32 bit USB key with the
same DVD-RW):

- the patch is still not "proposed" on 11.10 and 12.04 (see
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/), so I cannot rightly test it
there
- the "unreadable coasters" produced from other Ubuntu versions are seen as
blank disk from standard brasero 12.10, and can be easily blanked with it. This
is different from old versions of brasero that does not recognise it at all as
a DVD medium.
- the bug (don't ask me why) is quite different on 12.10. Here sometimes you
can have a readable DVD, but never on the first recording! It seems that it's
somehow and sometimes able to record a second recording session on what it
thinks it's a blank disk.

+1 for going to stable on quantal!

[Bug 1071883] [NEW] weather applet prefs crash due to incorrect use of g_settings_get ()

2012-10-26 Thread Marcus Comstedt
Public bug reported:

The function compare_location() in gweather-pref.c contains the
following call:

g_settings_get (pref->priv->applet->lib_settings, "default-location",
"(ssm(dd))",
&default_loc, NULL, NULL);

This format string requires 5 pointers to be provided, but only 3 are
given. Beacuse if this, g_settings_get will use random stack data as
pointers, and corrupt memory causing a crash.

Adding 2 more NULL pointers fixes the problem:

g_settings_get (pref->priv->applet->lib_settings, "default-location",
"(ssm(dd))",
&default_loc, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL);

[Bug 1069531] Re: Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

2012-10-26 Thread Rob Whalley
@Steven - thanks, that makes sense... unfortunately no matter how many
times the accounts are removed and re-added (and the stored credentials
in seahorse deleted), this does not resolve the problem here. Have
created a blank user account on the machine and reproduced the problem.

A different google account works - the account name is in the format
"usern...@gmail.com".
The account that does not work is connected to a non-gmail address, in the
format "em...@fullname.co.uk".

Wouldn't be surprised if that's where the problem lies...

[Bug 1065578] Re: GIMP/Inkscape/Blender (and possible more)-Unity-Integration needs to be improved

2012-10-26 Thread Thomas Hotz
** No longer affects: inkscape (Ubuntu)

** No longer affects: blender (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- GIMP/Inkscape/Blender (and possible more)-Unity-Integration needs to be
improved
+ GIMP-Unity-Integration needs to be improved

** Description changed:

  Unlike other applications GIMP (and other applications) don't open
  maximised if it is closed maximised.

  When reopened after being closed maximised, the program window is too
  large for the screen space available and extends below the bottom edge
  of the screen. This was confirmed at least for GIMP.
-
- Inkscape reopens always too small. This happens in Unity and in GNOME 3.

  This happens at least for me with a monitor resolution of 1366 x 768.

[Bug 1069531] Re: Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

2012-10-26 Thread Steven Roose
@Rob That solution I suggested doesn't at all implies you should have 2-factor
auth. All 2-factor auth options were between brackets.
What I think happened is that before, online-accounts stored your raw password
and now works by giving itself access via the default Google Auth API. So
people with 2-factor auth give this permission another way that people without
do.

Of course I'm not sure of this, that's just what is looks like if I see
what people are experiencing.

[Bug 1069531] Re: Cannot login to Empathy after setting up Google online account

2012-10-26 Thread Jesse van Herk
I'm not using 2-factor auth, and the problem was resolved for me by
following Bruno's suggestion, i.e. removing the old googletalk/jabber
account item, and creating/using a new google account item instead (same
username and password).

It seems like the bug is that previously-created google talk accounts
just don't migrate successfully to the online accounts feature.

[Bug 1071449] Re: when i open terminal , it wont open in the middle of the screen , it opens at the corner and i cant move it thank you

2012-10-26 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1071739] [NEW] Unable to mount Blank DVD-R Disc

2012-10-26 Thread Icaro Clever
I didn't undestand your question. Do you wanna know what is the LDAP
acronym meaning?

Well, I'm passing the packages and versions of LDAP because I forgot
informing this to you in the last post. Maybe this answer your question.

ldap-auth-client = 0.5.3
ldap-auth-config = 0.5.3
libpam-ldap= 184-8.5ubuntu3
libnss-ldap = 264-2.2ubuntu4

I've used the tutorial
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LDAPClientAuthentication .

gdm starts on both monitors. As soon as I log in, LVDS1 goes off.

I can enable the second monitor in SystemSettings->Displays, and even
click on "keep configuration" but it doesn't activate.

It's disabled in software somewhere. I say that because the message
tray at the bottom is in a different location when both monitors are
active. So there is a software detect-monitor-size that moves the
message tray, and it's almost always where it would be for single
monitors.

Worked fine in Gnome-Shell 3.0.0.

[Bug 963061] Re: Doesn't remember ftp password despite promising to do so

2012-10-26 Thread Daniel Hawkins
This affects the other protocols as well (not just FTP). The
credentials do get stored ("remembered") in the Passwords and Keys
application, but they do not get recalled on future connection attempts.

[Bug 1066208] Re: Battery indicator shows mouse battery instead of notebook battery

2012-10-26 Thread Charles Kerr
Regarding the other half of this ticket: showing the mouse battery
instead of the notebook battery /might/ be correct, but it depends on
the state of the two batteries. The spec at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Power#Title states the decision should be based
on "what you need to know most: what device will lose power soonest (and
optionally when), or otherwise which device will take longest to
charge".

I've filed bug #1071645 to cover the other half of this bug separately.

** Summary changed:

- Battery indicator shows mouse battery instead of notebook battery
+ power indicator shows a mouse battery as a laptop battery

** Changed in: indicator-power
   Importance: Undecided => High
