[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Quantal SRU uploaded, needs SRU review now.

** Description changed:

  Hewlett-Packard HP Envy 14 1095la
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/druellan/hpenvy1095la

I get an error message -Adding read ACL for uid 999 to `/media/ubuntu'
failed: Operation not supported- every time I try to insert a mountable
  media (CD/DVD/SD card/Pendrive/USB drive).

  What I expect:
Media mounted and visible on Nautilus

  What I get:
  An error message, sometimes twice.

Note: I'm using a live USB created with UNETBOOTIN, using 700mb of
  session space.

+ Patch: http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-
+ utopia/udisks2.git;a=commitdiff;h=3dfc41a31
+
+ Regression potential: No behaviour change on systems where ACLs work on
+ the root file system. On systems where it does not work, hardly none as
+ mounting through udisks is broken right now.
+
+ SRU TEST CASE:
+ - Create a non-ACL capable overlay on /media:
+ sudo modprobe scsi_debug
+ # now find out which drive this created, check in dmesg; assuming /dev/sdb
+ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb
+ sudo mount -o noacl /dev/sdb /media/
+
+ - Now plug in an USB stick; in Quantal's version you will get an error
+ message about failed ACL setting; in the proposed version it will be
+ properly automounted
+
+ - Clean up: Remove the stick, "sudo umount /dev/sdb", and "sudo rmmod
scsi_debug"
+
+

2012-11-22 Thread Martin Pitt
> Mounting as ext4 enables acl by default, but mounting as ext3 doesn't
(see the linux kernel documentation).

For the record, I cannot reproduce this as I already said in my earlier
comment when I tried it with ext2:

sudo modprobe scsi_debug
sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb
sudo mount /dev/sdb /media/
sudo touch /media/test.txt
sudo setfacl -m u:www-data:r /media/test.txt

This all works, and I correctly get
$ sudo getfacl /media/test.txt
user::rw-
user:www-data:r--
[...]

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Thanks Jan for pointing these out. That's a little worrying as this
essentially means that programs can't use ACLs. But at least we now know
the root cause, so let's make udisks resistant to that.

For the record, this is another consequence of not using /run/media/. At
some point I'd like to move to a tmpfs /media (with a symlink, bind
mount, etc.), but of course not for a Quantal update.

[Bug 980710] Re: black font on black background in xfce terminal

2012-11-22 Thread Candace
I experienced the same issue on my labtop (running ubuntu 12.10). I
switched from unity to xfce4, and when I opened up terminal to type
commands in, none of the text appeared. I disabled "use colors from
system theme" as was recommended above, and this fixed the issue for me.

[Bug 975543] Re: Some default applications have a non-contrasted icon when using HighContrast themes

2012-11-22 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I'm closing this because it is assigned to the wrong package and
developers won't see it here. Some of these missing icons were fixed in
my upload today of gnome-themes-standard to raring for Ubuntu 13.04.

For the rest, we need bugs filed against the individual packages
(especially for Ubuntu-specific apps). I started doing this today using
the tag a11y.

For GNOME apps, that is being tracked at
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/HighContrastAppIcons

[Bug 983291] Re: Screen Rotation options only Counterclockwise & Clockwise

2012-11-22 Thread JC
I can confirm the same problem on ubuntu 12.10 on a Macbook 2,1.
It works when "mirroring", however.
>From what I read on the internet, there is no "Ubuntu 2D" in 12.10, so that
>work-around will not work any more.

I see this has "low" priority, but this seems fairly fundamental to me,
since I know many people who use more than one screen at work.

Regards.

It's possible that this is resolved by

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=688700 was marked a duplicate
of it, though it has a better title. If this is indeed the fix, then an
urgent backport ahead of 3.6.1 would be advisable. Being forced to
reboot after resume from suspend is not really that fun.

[Bug 1079953] Re: Main Menu Editor alacarte is Completely Broken in xubuntu 12.10

2012-11-22 Thread Leo H
I can confirm that the updated version of alacarte currently in quantal-
proposed does restore some functionality as regards the first three
items mentioned in my earlier post (tick boxes, create new menu items,
delete menu items).

However

-- Drag and drop of a menu item within a menu folder (rearrange menu
item order) still does not work.

-- Drag and drop of a menu item from one menu folder to another still
does not work.

-- Moving a menu item up or down within a menu folder with the arrow
keys can only be done one position at the time. This takes about 15
seconds the be effected per step. Until this step takes effect, further
clicks on the up or down arrow keys are ignored. During this process
alacarte claims 95%-100% of CPU and over 50MiB of memory for a fresh
standard installation of xubuntu 12.10 with only some 15 additional menu
items.

-- Ticking or unticking a menu item box, adding new menu items, and
deleting menu items makes similarly excessive time, CPU and memory
demands.

In summary, the alacarte update works in a way, but slower than my pet
escargot which is not à la carte. At the same time alacarte claims the
whole system and turns it into a pressure cooker.

> but this would be a bad and incomplete workaround for the root problem.

Most applications don't need ACL support, and even udisks2 only seems to "need"
it to set the ACL when creating that directory, but seems to work fine
otherwise if the directory is created manually without the ACL.
(It is also the only location in the udisks2 sources where any ACL-functions
are used.)

Maybe the ACL is needed on the distro/system of the upstream developer,
but he never tested this code on other systems/distros? Maybe it's
related to systemd or selinux? (Or maybe there are some circumstances
that need the ACL that are not applicable to my system?)

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Jan Claeys
@Martin Pitt:
Mounting as ext4 enables acl by default, but mounting as ext3 doesn't (see the
linux kernel documentation).

My system was installed in November 2007, long before ext4 was stable
(December 2008), so naturally '/' is formatted as ext3. I suppose other
people have older filesystems too, or they chose not to use ext4 for
some other reason.

[Bug 1081691] Re: Launcher - Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater

2012-11-22 Thread Lain_13
@Adolfo Jayme Barrientos:
You have seen me in two bugs here (or probably 3) and already made such
conclusion! And like I have to care do you like quotes from wiki or not.
Fascinating…

Icons must be language-independent. It's just common sense and A letter
on these icons have no meaning at all. It clearly fails to represent
Ubuntu Software Center. As contributor to localizations and translations
you have to understand this even better then I do.

@Hans Heintze:
Nice idea to solve this issue you have here! I do agree with it.

[Bug 1039014] [NEW] Hidden files always visible in open file dialog

2012-11-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Whenever an open-file dialog appears, it presents all files, including
hidden. The setting Show hidden files in the preferences of Nautilus is
OFF. Of course I can always click Ctrl+H or right-click and disable
showing hidden files. But it's annoying!

The general setting should apply to all dialogs: if its OFF then all
dialogs should hide hidden files.

The problem was discussed:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/109571/open-file-dialog-defaults-to-showing-hidden-files
and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1131710

The Ctrl+H solution is not a solution, its only a workaround...

[Bug 868358] Re: Hibernate hotkey (fn + ...) triggers suspend to ram

2012-11-22 Thread John Doe
I noticed that pressing Fn+F4 (suspend) actually triggers hibernate,
while Fn+F12 triggers suspend. I have set all power-keys to hibernate as
hinted in #22.

Keycode for Fn+F12 is:

~ $ sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event4
Press ESC to finish, or Control-C if this device is not your primary keyboard
scan code: 0x0B key code: suspend

while Fn+F4 is:

[Bug 1081691] Re: Launcher - Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater

I agree that the "A" is a bit confusing, perhaps you could use lens-nav-
app.svg from the unity visual assets. This would give us greater
consistancy across the OS and stop the icon from being language
specific.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when some menu is open

2012-11-22 Thread Margarita Manterola
This problem is also present in KDE, so it's not a bug exclusive to
gnome-screensaver. As was said before, this is a problem with the way X
was designed, and the solutions imply either re-designing X (I doubt
there are many people up to such a task) or working around it.

For suspend/hibernate there's the inhibitor locks design doc from
Freedesktop, that could allow adding some hooks and forcing pop-up
windows to close just before suspending:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/inhibit

It's a different story when trying to manually lock (ctrl-alt-l), since
the keyboard is grabbed by the pop-up, no application receives the lock
combination and no application can then act appropriately.

In any case it's quite a hard bug to fix, that requires a well thought
solution, not a quick hack to fix it.

[Bug 875878] Re: Easymp3gain Hangs when clicking Add File or Add Folder

2012-11-22 Thread Dngrsone
Still broken in Precise 64-bit, however, got it to work by doing the
following:

download the .deb from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/easymp3gain/

if installed, deinstall easymp3gain:

sudo apt-get remove easymp3gain-gtk

install the downloaded package:

go to the download dir, normally Downloads:

cd Downloads

sudo dpkg -i easymp3gain-gtk2_0.5.0-2_i386.deb

After this, there were dependancy issues, so I did this:

sudo apt-get -f install

That fixed everything, and I am currently analyzing my music...

Thanks, Sander (comment #9), for the fix!

[Bug 987986] Re: Cannot browse files via bluetooth on Android device

2012-11-22 Thread Kent T.
Recently tested, on 12.10 this problem lives on.
If I may add a similar problem to this bug, you're also not able to send any
data to any devices.
Besides, I tried to connect and pair with another notebook with (x)ubuntu
running on it.
Like the description for this bug, you can't browse the other system or send
anything to it.

Various tries on my behalf leads to the assumption, that the "obex-data-
server" ist at fault, because this particular piece always crashes, if
trying to send anything.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Same happend to me when playing a song preview in Ubuntu One Music store
and then trying to play a preview of another song. This happens every
time I do this so it's easily reproducable.

Apport marked this bug as a duplicate of a private bug, so please make
bug #926618 public, so it can be solved. This is a serious problem with
the Ubuntu One music store. For now, I am removing duplicate status.

This bug affects me also. Had to manually edit in commandline with
gsettings to remove some locations that were causing trouble (really
slow wireless network locations for example).

It really bugs me that you cannot see what locations you have added and
remove them via the rhythmbox UI. It is really lousy design in my
opinion. Can anyone explain to me the decision NOT to include this in
the UI?

[Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing "Safely Remove Drive" and "Eject" options from context menu. Only have "Unmount".

2012-11-22 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Also, the safely remove option would recognise if the external drive had
multiple partitions and offer to remove the master device if I remember
correctly. Now I have to manually unmount four partitions on my 2 TB
external disk every time I want to remove it.

Expected behaviour - Expected behaviour - when Unity detects that the
user is ejecting a partition that is on an external drive containing
more partitions, it should offer to safely remove the whole device.
Alternatively there should be two options upon right clicking a drive
icon - "unmount only the partition" and "safely remove master device".

[Bug 1081691] Re: Launcher - Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater

2012-11-22 Thread Roshan
about the updater icon, i hope it is not final.. i would like to have it
icon dynamically ..ie.. colorless when no updates are needed, green
color plus badge count .. I feel it does not need 'A' and i suggest
'screen with the package' icon inside the update circle, it means it
look as a software updater across the devices( in my opinion these
devices have screens ,, ie mobile, desktop, tablet)

Re: [Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Shane Pearson
Martin,

I turned off wifi and I'm connected to the router with a network cable.
Wifi has been slow since 11.10 :-/

The ip address is: 92.85.210.155

Re: [Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Shane Pearson
Sorry Martin,

Not too familiar with this Romtelecom router by Huawei. Firewall is off
and filtering is off. But I can't find options for ports.

I'm now getting errors accessing websites.. But my iPod Touch is
connecting fine. My ipod is showing the same ip so I'm gonna shut it
off, restart the router, and restart my computer.

This is the the top part of netstat -l:

Active Internet connections (only servers)

tcp0 0 *:smtp *:*

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-22 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm logged into Jerre's box now, and this is what I can find out without
root privileges:

- I confirm that ACLs are broken:

$ touch test.txt
$ getfacl test.txt
# file: test.txt
# owner: mpitt
# group: mpitt
user::rw-
group::rw-
other::r--
$ setfacl -m u:nv:r test.txt
setfacl: test.txt: Operation not supported

No special mount options for root file system:
/dev/sda1 / ext2 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 0

However, it is unusual to actually use ext2. Jerre mentioned that in an
earlier comment.

I can create a new ext2 partition here with working ACLs. Even when I do

  sudo tune2fs -E mount_opts="noacl" /dev/sdb

on my local test partition, dumpe2fs doesn't change the default mount
options, but has a new fiield "Mount options", which isn't being
considered. That smells like another bug, but is not quite related to
this change.

Jerre is using the -lowlatency kernel, but as far as I can see, ACL
support is enabled there for all relevant file systems (grep FS.*ACL
/boot/config-3.5.0-18-lowlatency).

For more experiments I need to be able to load scsi_debug and/or do loop
mounts for further testing, and thus need sudo privileges.

That doesn't seem to work, it can't connect. You might need to open
port 22 in your router or so.

But Jerre gave me ssh access, so I can start on his box.

Thanks!
