[Bug 1093946] Re: Evince fails to open PDF files. worked prior to Ubuntu 12.10 upgrade [-WARNING **: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpoppler-glib.so.8: undefined symbol: cairo_mesh_pattern_begin_patch]
Hi Bill, I think the 'fix' that is from your comment #7 is likely to be the cause of the problem; it's difficult to say for sure without pulling apart all the libraries, but given that it's complaining about a missing cairo_* symbol it does sound like a good explanation. Personally I'd NEVER replace one of the libraries in /usr/lib - at least because it makes it really difficult for us to tell what happened! If you need to use a different version of a library for a particular program then put it somewhere out of the way and when you run the problematic program set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable just for that program - that way it won't affect anything else. So, how to clean up - hmm. Move those files back from the libcairo_orig that you made, and that might be enough. I'd probably forcably try reinstalling the libcairo2; according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libcairo2searchon=namessuite=allsection=all you should probably have version 1.12.2-1ubuntu2.2. If there is still a copy of that in /var/cache/apt/archives then doing a dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libcairo2_1.12.2-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb (naming might be slightly different) might do that. [Bug 1095068] [NEW] Empathy: No contacts on gtalk: 'status is set to offline'
Public bug reported: This problem happens in two computers, whether I use auto-login or not, with Ubuntu 12.10. I configured two accounts on the Online Accounts window: Facebook and Google. My Facebook contacts always appear on Empathy, but gTalk contacts almost never appear, with the error message status is set to offline appearing in red at the top of Empathy's main window. Dave, Restoring the original libcario module fixed evince --- now NX is unable to display text again. Not being real familiar with the internals of Linux, It never occurred to me to relate the loss of EVINCE with the fix of NX --- especially since they occurried weeks apart from each other. - - - - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2081746highlight=nomachine I just went out and reread the fix description on NX and found that there are new updates to that report. Originally there were only comments 1 to 5. Now there are comments 6 to 12. apparently other people had the same trouble as I did --- and as I was badly burned by the last attempt to fix NX, I do not want to get burned again. Would you be so kind, as to review those comments and see if there is a recommended fix for NX? As I still consider myself a relatively newbee in Linux, I would appreciate the assistance.) If that is against the rules, then I understand and greatly appreciate the assistance that you have provided!!! /s/ Bill Turner, wb4alm -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1093946 Title: Evince fails to open PDF files. worked prior to Ubuntu 12.10 upgrade [-WARNING **: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpoppler-glib.so.8: undefined symbol: cairo_mesh_pattern_begin_patch] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/1093946/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Marking invalid since it's actually due to a broken work around. What I think you'll need to do is get a copy of the library file (like the one that you copied into /usr/lib) and put it somewhere else - lets say /home/wherever/bodge . Now find what starts nx, and start it manually from a terminal, but before you do then do: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/wherever/bodge:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH that will cause NX to pick up it's library from /home/whereever/bodge first. It might need some debugging, but at least it won't break everything else. ** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid ** Description changed: + [Dave Gilbert: This is the result of attempting the work around at + + http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2081746highlight=nomachine + + please don't do that!] + Any time I try to view a PDF file, an icon is created in the task bar that says opening file but the file does not open.
