[Bug 1093946] Re: Evince fails to open PDF files. worked prior to Ubuntu 12.10 upgrade [-WARNING **: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpoppler-glib.so.8: undefined symbol: cairo_mesh_pattern_begin_patch]

2013-01-01 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Bill,
I think the 'fix' that is from your comment #7 is likely to be the cause of
the problem; it's difficult to say for sure without pulling apart all the
libraries, but given that it's complaining about a missing cairo_* symbol it
does sound like a good explanation. Personally I'd NEVER replace one of the
libraries in /usr/lib - at least because it makes it really difficult for us to
tell what happened!

If you need to use a different version of a library for a particular
program then put it somewhere out of the way and when you run the
problematic program set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable just
for that program - that way it won't affect anything else.

So, how to clean up - hmm.

Move those files back from the libcairo_orig that you made, and that might be
enough. I'd probably forcably try reinstalling the libcairo2; according to
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libcairo2searchon=namessuite=allsection=all
you should probably have version 1.12.2-1ubuntu2.2. If there is still a copy
of that in /var/cache/apt/archives then doing
a

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libcairo2_1.12.2-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
(naming might be slightly different) might do that.

Dave

[Bug 1095068] [NEW] Empathy: No contacts on gtalk: 'status is set to offline'

2013-01-01 Thread Miguel Branco
Public bug reported:

This problem happens in two computers, whether I use auto-login or not, with
Ubuntu 12.10.
I configured two accounts on the Online Accounts window: Facebook and Google.

My Facebook contacts always appear on Empathy, but gTalk contacts almost
never appear, with the error message status is set to offline
appearing in red at the top of Empathy's main window.

I have to restart Empathy several times until I get lucky and it shows
my gTalk contacts.

I also try setting my status to Online in various ways: through the
Unity Panel, through Empathy's main-window 'Go Online' button, and
through Empathy's main-window dropdown box. The symptoms are the same no
matter what I do.

2013-01-01 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
Dave, Restoring the original libcario module fixed evince --- now NX is unable
to display text again.

Not being real familiar with the internals of Linux, It never occurred to me to
relate the loss of EVINCE with
the fix of NX --- especially since they occurried weeks apart from each other.

- - - -

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2081746highlight=nomachine

I just went out and reread the fix description on NX and found that there are
new updates to that report.
Originally there were only comments 1 to 5.
Now there are comments 6 to 12.
apparently other people had the same trouble as I did --- and as I was badly
burned by the last attempt to fix NX, I do not want to get burned again.

Would you be so kind, as to review those comments and see if there is a
recommended fix for NX?
As I still consider myself a relatively newbee in Linux, I would appreciate
the assistance.)

If that is against the rules, then I understand and greatly appreciate
the assistance that you have provided!!!

2013-01-01 Thread Dave Gilbert
Marking invalid since it's actually due to a broken work around.

What I think you'll need to do is get a copy of the library file (like
the one that you copied into /usr/lib) and put it somewhere else - lets
say /home/wherever/bodge . Now find what starts nx, and start it
manually from a terminal, but before you do then do:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/wherever/bodge:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

that will cause NX to pick up it's library from /home/whereever/bodge
first. It might need some debugging, but at least it won't break
everything else.

** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Invalid

** Description changed:

+ [Dave Gilbert: This is the result of attempting the work around at
+
+ http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2081746highlight=nomachine
+
+ please don't do that!]
+
Any time I try to view a PDF file, an icon is created in the task bar
that says opening file but the file does not open. No errors are
shown and I have not located any messages in any of the logs. This
problem affects ALL pdf files, but the files are displayable using
  mupdf.

According to the following, evince 3.6.0 is installed.

-
  apt-cache policy evince
  evince:
- Installed: 3.6.0-0ubuntu2
- Candidate: 3.6.0-0ubuntu2
- Version table:

+  *** 3.6.0-0ubuntu2 0
+ 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages
+ 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I have attempted to purge and reinstall evince several times, even to
the point of deleting the evince libraries in /usr/lib/ and
/usr/share/ and /var/lib/dpkg/info/ The result is always the same.
Sometimes after the failure, Ubuntu reports an internal error in evince
  - which I have told it to send a report to the developers. The report
must be very small, as it takes less than a second to do so.

[Bug 935304] [NEW] lost java6 file associations in unity

2013-01-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

have both openjdk-6-jre and openjdk-7-jre installed. Minecraft.jar
requires 6. At some point, the file association for 6 disappeared (used
to have options for both), and I can only associate the file with
(incompatible) java 7, or archive manager (useless.) was working for
several months. Total mystery how to create associations in unity, so
stumped.

to reproduce, have a minecraft.jar on the desktop. click on it,
something useless happens. right click to change file association, no
options available for java6, in spite of it being installed.

2013-01-01 Thread shankao
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in libimobiledevice.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

gnome-utils has been dropped in Debian since GNOME has split the

dummy gnome-utils for the lts though

Is there a way how i can run this trigger in some kind of

The trigger executes only one command, you can invoke it manually without
--quiet to see if it behaves similar:
# gtk-update-icon-cache --force --quiet /usr/share/icons/hicolor

(and/or gtk-update-icon-cache-3.0)
