[Bug 833735] Guten Morgen
-- Peter Tönnies Restelbergstrasse 60 8044 Zürich, ZH Schweiz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/833735 Title: ICQ contact stays offline To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/833735/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space
I'm also affected by this issue some 2315 days after it was originally reported. My home server is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and contains a 500GB system partition that was entirely filled by .xsession-errors in under 48 hours. In my case, the file is full of the message "Authentication deferred - ignoring client message" which seems to indicate some issue with vino- server, but that's a separate point altogether. If a file is growing at a rate of 8GB/h, there is surely something seriously wrong with the host system! I only managed to find this issue because my disk space kept evaporating and I'm an advanced enough user to find a massive hidden file and then go looking for more information about said file. As of this moment, I'm still not even sure what to do to solve the actual issue that is causing the file to grow. The real purpose of this post is to attempt to chastise somebody into fixing this stupid bug once and for all. I understand the problem that this log file is attempting to solve, but there must be a better way of going about it. Why not rotate the file out after a reasonable size has been reached... say 100MB or so? If the file is already being cleared on every session restart, then the developers have demonstrated that they don't care too much about what's in it, as most folks restart their machines daily. If a file contains more than 1MB of the same log message over and over and over again, then as much information has been reported to the user as is available about that particular error. Another 450-some-odd gigs isn't going to help the situation, and may cause stability and security problems to boot. Better yet, if the file is getting this much traffic, why not inform the user that there may be a problem with his/her system? Again, I wouldn't be complaining on this very forum if I weren't an advanced user. I've installed Ubuntu on my mother in law's machine, and I can assure you that she wouldn't have any idea what to do if her laptop started complaining that it was low on disk space. If the gods are smiling, she might think to empty the recycle bin. Honestly guys, let's try and fix this one. It's getting ridiculous at this point. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60448 Title: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/60448/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

How can I obtain a copy of gnome-sudoku with this fix which jbicha states has been released? It certainly does not seem to be present in my installation of Ubuntu 11.10 (which has been kept fully up to date). The game does produce a new puzzle to play online, but it does not produce multiple new games so that the option "Print Multiple Sudokus" can be used. [Bug 272557] Re: Leaving an SD card in the slot when suspending creates a nautilus window on awake
I can confirm this problem on my ThinkPad T61p under Ubuntu 12.04LTS. An SD card that is 'loaded' when the system goes to sleep will cause a new Nautilus window to be opened when the system resumes from sleep. I have checked my /var/log/kern.log and have found this: Jan 15 17:20:17 T61p kernel: [32912.339063] mmc0: card 1234 removed So it appears that the kernel is unloading the card when it goes to sleep. Later in the same log file I found this: Jan 15 18:24:32 T61p kernel: [32916.169311] mmc0: new high speed SD card at address 1234 So it is clear that Nautilus 'sees' the card as being inserted upon wakeup. The bug seems not with Nautilus, but with the Kernel. BTW: look on the upstream gnome bug - the underlying problem in gstreamer binding was fixedover a year and a half ago: "For more of a reference see the following thread: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtkmm-list/2012-December/msg00024.html The problem was corrected in gstreamermm-0.10.9.1 and upwards (I just checked to make sure). I was suffering the same problem in Ubuntu 12.04 both in Unity and Gnome Desktops, so I tried to look for the source and even if you can close kalarm correctly the nepomuk and akonadi servers continue to run in the background. After exiting kalarm if you kill manually akonadi and nepomukserver then you can close the unity/gnome session in Ubuntu 12.04 without errors. [Bug 1020759]
The motivation for moving out of /media was that with /media any user can access the filesystem that your user mounts. Which obviously is highly undesirable on multi-user systems. Originally we wanted to use $XDG_USER_RUNTIME_DIR and for a while we did that, see http://cgit.freedesktop.org/udisks/commit/?id=502fb5b7810afb50e48354e6b4d1781d07f79e10 but shortly determined that it was racy (it's never a good idea for a system daemon to write to a directory controlled by untrusted users) so we ended up using /run/media instead: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/udisks/commit/?id=502fb5b7810afb50e48354e6b4d1781d07f79e10 (OTOH, if you really want all users to access a device, you simply just add an /etc/fstab entry. We now have API in udisks and UI in GNOME Disks for this.) > violating the expectations of experienced users and possibly > breaking user scripts / symlinks. Just FYI, it's pretty fragily to rely on udisks just this or that name in /media in the first place so I don't think any "experienced user" would do this. If you need a predictable mount point, you need to use /etc/fstab or mount the device yourself through another mechanism. Or, better, fix your software and/or scripts to figure out the mount point itself by looking at things like /proc/self/mountinfo use lsblk(8) or whatever. > Please fix udisks to move its mounts back to /media." [Bug 1020759]
This kind of "new behavior" which breaks everythink that was carefully configured before, annoys me as well. ("it's not a bug, it's a feature") I'm using several applications (unison in particular) on external drives, and for them when I made my user configurations I made references to /media/, not /run/media//, not to /media// (like Debian did) It's especially annoying for tools such as Unison which have a database of all changes made on disks, and can't refer to the correct names because it was arbitrary changed, so you must forget all the previous history and build a new one, which is long and tedious for huge external drives. Come on, who is ever using a Linux Desktop for several users, AND at the same time needs security so they can plug different usb keys or external drives simultaneously? In more than 99% of the cases, it won't be necessary, and in the rare cases it could be necessary (multiseat), this kind of behavior could be set as an option, for example in a damn /etc/udisks2.conf On the other hand, if security was such an issue, /media// could still have been kept, but the permissions for the folder could have been set in r/w only for the one who had inserted the key. After all, it doesn't prevent security to have /home/user1 and /home/user2 under the same folder. For my part I could "fix" this by installing udisks (v1) and removing udisks2 and all its dependencies (including gnome, mate etc). If you feel you really need to make a fondamental behavior change in a product, please use opt-in instead, and make an option to enable the new behavior, instead of the opposite. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1020759 Title: /run/media is an unnecessary divergence from the FHS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/udisks/+bug/1020759/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

No. What the FHS says about removable media is not in any way useful (it was written a long time ago too, last revision is 2004). David, I'm not happy about the per-user subdirectories either, but I understand the motivation and that's not what this bug is about. I was reporting a bug because udisks is moving the mounts out from under /media to /run/media, and this is a violation of the FHS. If distros want to take advantage of /run to auto-clean mount points on reboot, they can make /media a symlink to /run/media - but udisks should still be creating its directories relative to /media, because that's what the FHS mandates.

(In reply to comment #1) > As for the /media -> /run/media change, I presume this was done to avoid > having > to clean up stale mount point directories after reboot? Well, yeah, kinda - the idea is that such temporary mounts really are non-persistent => they belong somewhere in /run instead of a top-level like /media (although on Fedora, /media was already on tmpfs since F15 or so). Just for the record I also don't think that having a "standard" mandate where removable media is mounted is in any way useful for users or distributors.

[Bug 1099792] [NEW] nautilus info panel obscures list view
Public bug reported: The yellow information box that appears at the bottom of the nautilus window can obscure the last entry in a list view. *Observed Behaviour* * Open a folder with several files or folders in it. The /tmp folder usually has enough files and folders to reproduce this bug. * Switch to list view using the view menu, or the shortcut Ctrl-2. * Resize the window to make the list longer than the window is high. * Select any file. * Try to read the filename of the last file displayed in the window. It is frequently not possible to read the file name or details of the last file in the folder as the yellow box obscures it. This is particularly noticable if the file name of the selected file is very long. *Expected Behaviour* Since this information box obscures part of the window, it should be used only when it will: * Not obscure existing information * Provides information that is not already available It happens that the default list view already displays all information that the yellow box provides. Therefore the yellow box should be disabled for list view. The alternative is to alter the list view to always leave space at the bottom - which would then reduce the amount of elements that could be displayed. I have also seen other file browsers that have a thick border at the bottom. The information is then displayed in that border. This is much like leaving space at the bottom, and works quite well. *Further Enhancements* The yellow box does not display information that could not be found in other ways. It should be possible to disable the yellow box. Currently I can find no way to do so. *System Information* Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Release:12.04 nautilus: Installed: 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu5 Candidate: 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu6 Version table: 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu6 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/main amd64 Packages *** 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu5 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:3.4.1-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "My /tmp folder with a single item selected" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1099792/+attachment/3483886/+files/obscure.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1099792 Title: nautilus info panel obscures list view To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1099792/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
