[Bug 1153188] Re: Urdu with better support: Default Fonts, Kbd Layout
Thanks for the additional info! I'm slowly getting the picture.. Please bear with a simple guy from Western Europe. ;-) As regards fonts, I have proposed that Nafees Nastaleeq is added to the fonts-nafees package. A fonts-nafees build with the change is available in my PPA at https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/misc Can you please install that version of fonts-nafees, and let us know if the proposed change is a step in the right direction. I see that fonts-nafees is automatically installed when the Urdu language is installed. I also see that /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-nonlatin.conf mentions "Urdu Nastaliq Unicode" for serif and sans-serif. On 2013-03-10 11:34, عبدالله شلي (Abdellah Chelli) wrote: > It's better that language-selector sets "Nafees Regular" (Nafees Web in > fonts-nafees package) as default font for all font families (SansSerif, > Serif...except mono) used in Ubuntu. Do you mean that you would like that "Urdu Nastaliq Unicode" in /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-nonlatin.conf is exchanged for "Nafees Regular"? On 2013-03-12 14:15, Shabbir Ahmed wrote: > About the keyboard lay out there are many and we are talking about > the default, as to type in english you simply click into a text area > and start typing, where as in urdu you have to do some effort which a > common computer user is not aware of, so i think we have to simplify > things for him, if he clicks into a place to type in urdu he simply > selects the urdu and start typing the easiest way or the more easy he > can achieve his task. As far as I can tell, it is that easy already. If there are more than one keyboard layout activated for a user, e.g. "en" and "ur", s/he can select which one to use via the keyboard layout icon at the top bar. One aspect of "default" is the keyboard layout that is automatically suggested by the Ubuntu installer when Urdu is the selected language. Is that currently something else but "Urdu (Pakistan, CRULP)"? If so, would you like it to be changed to "Urdu (Pakistan, CRULP)"? I added a fonts-nafees task to this bug report and marked bug 1153549 as a duplicate of this one. [Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work since Natty (after bluetoothd 4.84 exactly)
I have been struggling with this on an Asus Eee 1005HA. Both regular utilities and blueman pair, but browsing (obex ftp) fail. They also fail in Mint 14 (based on quantal) as well as Precise 12.04 (launched as live USB). Interestingly, everything seems to work OK with an Asus USB dongle on three other machines (I could not sort out how to use 2 bluetooth devices on the 1005HA). I suspect the dongle has a different chip. If it is useful, contact me (nashjc at uottawa.ca) offlist and tell me what info to get and also the commands to do so. !0.04 Lucid, also run as live USB) DOES work. This supports the suggestion in other bug posts (e.g., one on fedora bugzilla https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=747575 that the issue is somewhere in the kernel. [Bug 1157253] [NEW] Gedit does not restore open tabs after crash correctly
Public bug reported: When Gedit crashes a bug report is generated and a dialog offers to relaunch application. If I choose to relaunch, a gedit window appears, however all tabs contains empty files. Only file names are correct. (It seams that all files are gone.) In other words, only filenames are used instead of full path to restor tabs. In the crash report, there was a command line key with the value with only file names (not with paths). The possible reason could be that gedit was launched form cmd line not in home folder but the restored is launched in the home folder. (All files has the ~ in the brackets, so user can discover that these files are not files which were open.) Note: The crash is not related to this ticked. This is bug is about restoring after crash. [Bug 1157249] [NEW] /etc/gnome/defaults.list claims to be user-modified, but I sure didn't do it
Public bug reported: I fired off an upgrade from quantal to raring, using do-release-upgrade -d -c (probably should have used update-manager, but server habits die hard). I then had one of my weekly quantal compiz crashes kill my ability to interact with the system. I waited until all disk activity stopped, rebooted, and started a dist-upgrade going. The very first thing I was posed with was a dialog telling me that I or a script had changed /etc/gnome/defaults.list and would I like to see a diff. The diff wasn't very informative to me (three lines changed, I guess?) as I'd never actually touched this file myself, to my knowledge. When filing this with ubuntu-bug, it also told me that I'd changed this file (but I said "yes" to the package manager! Doesn't that reset this?) and asked if I wanted to attach it to the bug. [Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choice as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog
Hello Rainer, I have to agree with you on this bug report. I have been subscribed to this for well over a year and as an end user I have not seen any progress. I advocate Ubuntu to a lot of people and generally I am happy in the direction Ubuntu is taking. However I feel that this shows a lack of commitment to detail. I would not expect to find something like this in OSX or Microsoft Windows. It is the little details that make the overall experience. Defaulting a calendar to open Gedit is simply not good practise. A calendar is a very basic item to have built in to your desktop and I was astounded when it was removed in Ubuntu and even more so that it is given such prominence in the touch edition of Ubuntu. Can any developer explain this disparity? It was stated that Thunderbird would provide the same level of functionality as Evolution did when the switch was first mooted and that Thunderbird would ship with a calendar. This is cleary an example of a regression in Ubuntu when a feature is removed and not replaced with an equivalent. Let me just ask, why is it essential for my phone that a calendar be a default application but not my desktop which I probably spend 10 times longer using in a day? Surely you would want to link your calendar across both devices in order to be productive. I think it is time that Canonical take a holistic approach to the totality of their computing experience and provide a consitent experience. [Bug 1153188] Re: Urdu with better support: Default Fonts, Kbd Layout
These days I'm researching different fonts and keyboard layouts and talking to URDU experts, The current defacto standard considered is "InPage" http://www.inpage.com/Download.html. They make their own versions of fonts, like the version of nastaleeq that InPage makes is called "Noori Nastaleeq". The best of all public implementations so far i found is Nafees Nastaleeq I mentioned in my above reply. it has an issue in that the text clarity in different font sizes is not same(distorted text like if you type something in large size on a low resolution display), in few sizes the text displays is not that best clear "like it does if you copy from Inpage" to an image format and view them in a browser. the best till i found is Nafees Nastaleeq, which is at least supported. there are many other versions of Nastaleeq available but not well supported. the other good fonts available are Nafees Web etc. Thanks, -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1153188 Title: Urdu with better support: Default Fonts, Kbd Layout To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/1153188/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
