[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for the interest/comments there, Ubuntu doesn't have a nautilus
hacker though and that chance is coming from upstream, it would be
better discussed on the upstream bug tracker/mailing list than on
launchpad ... while we agree that the current situation is suboptimal
not sure that's a problem that can easily by fixed by Ubuntu

[Bug 304889] Re: Does not use system proxy settings

2013-07-10 Thread Michael
People affected by this might want to look at using redsocks and
iptables to set up a transparent system proxy configuration. I have
done that and am more and more convinced that that is the way to go,
rather than making individual applications do proxy support.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your comment - it's nice to know that someone at
Ubuntu is paying attention to this thread.

I don't think forking an old version of Nautilus is practical. The
problem is that it would be a ton of work to keep such a fork compatible
with new versions of GTK, GLib and other libraries. Instead I think the
current version of Nautilus (3.8 in Saucy) should be patched to fix
this.

Removing type-ahead find has been controversial upstream (i.e. at GNOME)
- see, for example, the discussions at

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699087

Nevertheless I think it's very unlikely that the GNOME developers will
fix this for 3.10, or possibly ever. Even if they were to fix this in,
say, Nautilus 3.12 next spring, that version won't appear in Ubuntu
until late 2014 (since Ubuntu lags GNOME by a release cycle). So if
this going to be fixed in Ubuntu in the near future, I think Ubuntu will
need to take responsibility for doing that. You may not like that -
sure, in an ideal world this would be discussed rationally and fixed
upstream - but this is how it is.

You wrote not sure that's a problem that can easily by fixed by
Ubuntu. I guess that depends on what you mean by easily. I'm quite
confident that a competent hacker could come up with a patch to the
current Nautilus that restores type-ahead find in, say, 2-3 weeks. It
might even be easier. I'd start by attempting to git revert the commit
where this breakage was introduced:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=469eb89117e199a450aec3411183ed2e9f10f893

That will yield merge conflicts, which must be studied and resolved in
some nice way. This might not be solvable in a day, but I'd be very
surprised if this took more than a month of work.

To those of us on the outside, it's baffling that Ubuntu would not want
to invest that amount of effort to solve this, since this is a highly
visible core program on the Ubuntu desktop and it seems pretty evident
that the majority of users are harmed by this. Has someone at Ubuntu
already spent several weeks working on this and concluded it was too
difficult? Or does Ubuntu not feel it would be worth that amount of
effort?

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Hey Adam, thanks for your comment

Has someone at Ubuntu already spent several weeks working on this and
concluded it was too difficult? Or does Ubuntu not feel it would be
worth that amount of effort?

Well, neither, the current desktop team has around 10 people to maintain
the desktop ... that includes the complete GNOME stack, xorg, firefox,
libreoffice, etc.

In practice that's quite a low amonth of manpower compared to the number
of packages to maintain, blocking time from an hacker for more than half
a day is difficult for us... there is no way at the moment to spare
someone for a week to resolve nautilus issues, we just have to sneak
fixes in between higher priority work

Oh, for the record we do agree that this bug is annoying and would like
to fix, we just need to deal with what we have

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your reply. Given your staffing level I can see
why this is not as easy as it might seem.

According to this page Canonical has over 500 employees:

If only 10 of them are assigned to desktop maintenance, I would say that
team is seriously understaffed. But that's probably a discussion for
another forum, not this bug thread. :)

Right ... note that we have more desktop people than that, but most of
them are working on Unity and Ubuntu Touch ... which limits our
capacity for issues on the traditionnal desktop. But as you said,
that's a discussion getting out of topic for this bug ;-)

2013-07-10 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ There is no obvious way for users of Google Two-Factor Authentication to
+ add their Google account to GNOME Online Accounts.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. From GNOME Shell, run System Settings and click Online Accounts (If there
are two Online Accounts launchers, click the second one with an icon that looks
like two halves of the globe are being plugged into each other). If running

gnome-control-center.
+ 2. Add a Google Account. Use your regular password and then enter the Google
Two-Factor Authentication Code verification code when prompted.
+
+ What happens
+ ===
+ The Google account is added but immediately there is a warning
+ Expired credentials. Please log in again.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Only Google accounts should be affected. The CalDav provider in
+ Evolution Data Server has been ported to also work with OAuth v2.
+
+ Workaround
+ =
+ 1. Open Password and Keys and type Google in the Filter box.
+ 2. Double-click on the GOA google key.
+ 3. In the Password field, click Show Password and replace only the password

[Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2013-07-10 Thread Josip Krapac
Hi guys!

I'm Croatian and I've used '+c to produce letter ć, used in Croatian.
It's used also in Bosnian and Serbian. Serbs also have that letter when
they are using Latin letters. Although we do have Croatian and Serb
keyboard layouts, for programming I prefer to use US international
keyboard with dead keys.

Leandro, this is not true: If someone in Serbia or Poland use the US
keyboard layout, which they may use, they certainly have to do a lot
adaptations to be able to write in their languages. Probably if they use
that keyboard is for programming only. I've been using international
keyboard in previous versions of Ubuntu just fine, without any
adaptations. Also, that was convenient when I wrote in French and
Croatian, since I didn't have to switch keyboards.

The new arrangement doesn't make logical sense since:
a) it would make more sense to have [AltGr ,]+c to produce ç, since the cedille
is below letter, not above
b) there are two ways to get ç (1: AltGr + , 2: ´ + c), while, as far as I can
see, there is no way to get ć.

Be aware that ć is different from ċ and ƈ, both of which can be
obtained. I know that there's also letter with similar accent is Polish,
over letter s (ś), and that is also impossible to get now with the new
layout, as far as I see.

[Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2013-07-10 Thread Leandro
How do you used to write Nataša, for example, with the US-keyboard that types
the accented-c key? Or the Đ letter?

Not that this discussion is of any relevance anymore, since all kinds of
suggestions don't seem to reach anyone, but what I suggested at first
was to have a keyboard layout in which 'c = ç, as is useful for about
300 million people in the world (Portuguese+French). If that is the
default or the default is the accented c, which is used as a partial
incomplete layout by a much smaller fraction of the world's population,
is a secondary problem. But I insist we, brazilians, should have the
choice of typing 'c for ç, as that is the good choice for touch typists
(Alg-Gr combinations are a horrible options, and Mac keyboards don't
even have that Alg-Gr key).

Anyway, it is pretty impressive how the suggestion of having an
additional keyboard layout that fulfills the needs of so many people
(just check on google how many people have posted this problem) can
result in so enormous negative feedback.

Ps. In Windows there is a program called keyboard layout creator, or
something like that, with which one can create any keyboard layout one
wants. Linux is years light behind on that.

[Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2013-07-10 Thread LKRaider
The comments on this bug are so ridiculous - it would be funny if it
wasn't sad.

1. The request is for a new layout.
2. It does not affect any existing layout.
3. It is to help Portuguese-Brazilian users.
4. It does not affect anyone else.
5. Opinions on whether ' + c should or should not produce ç are irrelevant.

What is needed is someone with the knowledge and/or the will to create a
new layout.

If you cannot help with this, please don't get in the way.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread M Oberhauser
Unfortunately it seems that it's less a question of sense but stubbornness.
Immediately after the changes were merged, they came up with the Find in view
is broken issue:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679900

natermer left a long and very biased comment, indicating that Gnome won't
return to the type ahead functionality. Not sure how deep he's involved into
developement:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118#c63

It might be worth a try to directly contact the responsible devs and
have a polite discussion wether this bug was marked invalid on a
technical and comprehensible reason, considering design and consistency
being a bad tradeoff for usability and freedom of choice.

If Gnome then still persist on the Apple pathway, how are the chances of
getting a type ahead plugin working?

[Bug 321720]

2013-07-10 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
It looks like the xfa situation isn’t as dire as I’d been led to
understand.

OTOH, I’m not entirely certain that the licence text in the preface of
the pdf referenced in comment #9 is GPL-compatible. Or even DFSG-
compatible.

In any case (unless Albert things otherwise), it probably should not be
implemented as part of poppler. I suspect an xfa-specific library would
be better.

Poppler, of course, can help by assisting the extraction of the xml.

It is a huge (and likely non-Free) standard, will require web-browser-
like implementation, and xfa is not limited to pdf encapsulation.

It might work better as an extension to webkit or gecko.

[Bug 932177] Re: XFCE (and other non-GNOME) desktops do not initialise gnome-keyring correctly / WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to PKCS11

2013-07-10 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
As the bug is still present in 13.04 and probably 13.10 Kubuntu users

Copy the attached script 01gnome-keyring-daemon.sh into ~/.kde/env

Files in this directory are sources by /usr/bin/startkde so the script
can finish gnome-keyring-daemon initialization and provide environment
variables for KDE session.

[Bug 1200076] [NEW] brasero disk burning application ruins my dual-layer DVD's

2013-07-10 Thread Kenneth Gingerich
Public bug reported:

I have tried to do several one-to-one data disk copies with Brasero. I
have now ruined 3 (Expensive!) dual-layer DVD+Rdl disks. The program
will spend 25 minutes copying the 7+GB disks, and then prompt to
replace disk with blank DVD..., upon inserting the blank disk, a
checksum is carried out and the burning begins. About 20 seconds later
the burning stops and there is an error message stating that the burning
failed (and I am left with a now, unusable disk). The report is
available by request, since it is Very lengthly, ie: checksum results,
etc.
