[Bug 1220580] Re: nautilus crashes randomly with segmentation fault

[Bug 1142511] Re: Calendar Authentication requests password in Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.10
Hm...then I remember that one thing I did to try solving the problem before was un-installing evolution. So I re-installed it and now that checkbox IS there. However, after un-checking it and restarting my computer, the notification still comes up :( Sigh It never "randomly" comes up for it. It ALWAYS comes up when I restart my computer. After cancelling it, it never comes up again until I restart the computer. That's why I ignored it for so long, but I just can't anymore. [Bug 1220973] [NEW] Unable to change MAC-address for wireless adapter(s)
Public bug reported: Am having no issues making MAC-address changes to a wired adapter, only to the wireless adapters. Have replicated problem on two PCs (Ubuntu 13.04, updated as of Sept 5 2013). On both PCs, have tried two wireless adapters, one internal, the other USB. Same result. On one PC, the internal wireless presents as 'eth1' and the USB as 'wlan0'. On the second, the internal presents as 'wlan0' and the USB as 'wlan1'. But same result. Problem occurs when using either Macchanger (GNU MAC changer v1.5.0) or "sudo ifconfig wlan0 down / sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" in Terminal. Macchanger gives error "Can't change MAC: interface up or not permission: Invalid argument", while Terminal gives error "SIOCSIFHWADDR: Invalid argument". Same on both PCs. [Bug 1220764] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3
Public bug reported: When ripping CDs to MP3 using Rhythmbox, by default they are VBR, because this is the default preset that is used in /usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs (cbr=false). The problem is that the VBR headers aren't added to the MP3 files, for example: $ mp3val 01\ -\ Gregory\ Alan\ Isakov\ -\ Dandelion\ Wine.mp3 Analyzing file "01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3"... WARNING: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": VBR detected, but no VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly. INFO: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": 9559 MPEG frames (MPEG 1 Layer III), +ID3v2, no VBR header Done! This causes most programs to report incorrect track lengths, including Rhythmbox itself and Ubuntu's default Nautilus file manager. This seems to be a huge oversight considering this is the default behavior using the default apps. I'm not sure when this started because I only use the LTS versions of Ubuntu, but I know it wasn't a problem in 10.04, because it was using a gstreamer pipeline with xingmux as opposed to gstreamer presets, which from what I understand don't support xingmux (which I believe adds the VBR headers). I currently have to fix any MP3s that I generate with Rhythmbox like so: sudo apt-get install vbrfix cd /path/to/mp3s find . -type f -iname '*.mp3' -exec vbrfix {} {} \; rm vbrfix.log vbrfix.tmp This bug is related to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/945987 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: rhythmbox-data 2.96-0ubuntu4.3 [modified: usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs usr/share/rhythmbox/rhythmbox.gep] ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-39.60~precise1-generic 3.5.7.17 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-39-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu17.4 Architecture: amd64 Date: Wed Sep 4 09:54:54 2013 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20130213) MarkForUpload: True PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: rhythmbox UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug precise running-unity -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1220764 Title: Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/1220764/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Why is saving the traveling admin from typing their password a couple of times a day worth compromising security for everyone else? No, seriously. Why? >Your attack vector assumes that an administrative user is going to leave an >open session unattended. Yes, my assumption is that users will forget to lock their machines, because it happens all the time. For example, creating scripts in ~/bin that >are higher in the path then system binaries. Even if that number is high, that's no excuse. Is your stance really "Well, they could compromise security 100 ways, so what's one more?" Plus, how many of those attacks require 0 external resources, and creating 0 additional files on the system, and would leave little trace beyond a hiccup in the time/date? >Since your local security policy is different than what is shipped in a >general purpose operating system... Wanting a slightly more secure system is more of an edge case than changing the time zone repeatedly? REALLY? Does Windows 8 count as general purpose to you? It requires escalation to change the date and time. Maybe their escalation system isn't very good, but it's still better than blithely letting admins change the system time without so much as a prompt. Also, their security system doesn't rely on file timestamps, so it's less likely to grant someone root access. > 1- Requiring your administrative users to lock their workstation when they > are left unattended. People make mistakes. Are you telling me you've NEVER forgotten to lock your workstation? You've NEVER seen another admin forget to lock theirs? > 2- Requiring your administrative users to use "sudo -k" to forcibly > invalidate cached credentials. That only works on a per pty/tty basis on ubuntu. It only "invalidates" one of the sessions, and it "invalidates" it by changing the timestamp to a date to Dec. 31, 1969 or Jan. 1, 1970. You could try "sudo -K", which deletes the file, but again only on a per pty/tty basis. > 3- Removing the policykit-desktop-privileges package, or overriding the > policy with a local one. Oh good, more administrative work, all to save typing a password! Pity about all the users who don't know what policykit-desktop-privileges is or does though... > 4- Disabling ntp, or setting up ntp authentication. Disabling ntp wouldn't help, since the whole point is that the user can change the time to anything manually anyhow. > 5- Setting a firmware password on local machines. This doesn't help if they walked away and forgot to lock their machines. I especially love how #2 requires the user to remember to execute a command before they close their terminal, and adds an extra 7 keystrokes PER TTY/PTY. All this to save a hypothetical traveling admin from having to type his password once when he moves to a different timezone. If they want to save themselves a few keystrokes to change the timezone, let /them/ change policy kit. [Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.
Only administrators can change the local time without authenticating. Regular non-administrative users cannot. This allows administrative users travelling with laptops to change the timezone without getting an authentication prompt. Your attack vector assumes that an administrative user is going to leave an open session unattended. If that is the case, there are a whole slew of attacks that are possible, and don't require changing the date. For example, creating scripts in ~/bin that are higher in the path then system binaries. If you have administrative users that are leaving session unlocked, you have a more serious security issue than being able to change the time. Since your local security policy is different than what is shipped in a general purpose operating system, I suggest: 1- Requiring your administrative users to lock their workstation when they are left unattended. 2- Requiring your administrative users to use "sudo -k" to forcibly invalidate cached credentials. 3- Removing the policykit-desktop-privileges package, or overriding the policy with a local one. 4- Disabling ntp, or setting up ntp authentication. 5- Setting a firmware password on local machines. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: New => Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1219337 Title: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo. [Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find
Looking forward to see this thing fixed too. It's just insane that a bug that made people install alternative packages just to get rid of a tiny new feature is not considered a ultra-super-high priority on Ubuntu teams. I'm using Ubuntu for years, and this is the most annoying thing I've ever noticed since Unity was introduced. At first, I found myself cursing Ubuntu for that sudden UI change, but Unity made its way and now I really like it. I don't think the same gonna happen with this damn search thing. Nautilus browsing is just useless right now! I prefer "Ctrl+Alt+T", "cd to/a/path", and "nautilus .&" instead of touch my mouse or insanely arrow-navigate to do so. I would try to fix it myself if I knew C++ =/ Please, pleease call Mark to dev's room and ask him for a "Nautilus browsing experience". I'm sure it would hate Nautilus as we do right now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1164016 Title: restore type-ahead find To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1164016/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1220550] [NEW] gnome-keyring resets password
Public bug reported: Good day :) I have Ubuntu installed on an encrypted LVM partition, with user auto-login and an empty gnome-keyring password (I believe that an empty gnome-keyring password on an encrypted LVM is safe... is it? :). Every 5th or 6th boot (I don't know exact number) the gnome-keyring dialog pops out and asks me for a password. It no longer accepts empty password. I tried to set the password to some non-empty string ("a" or something like that), it again worked for several boots, then again started to ask for the password. I have to enter the user's password for the dialog to disappear. So it seems to me that something is (randomly?) resetting the gnome-keyring password to match the login password. Thanks and have a nice day!
