As Markus says, xim worked at first, but now (on trusty) it stops working in certain circumstances. I made it work by switching with ibus, logging out, and switching back then I restarted (I guess logging out would have done it, though). This bug is still present in up to date 13.10 and 14.04. The issue is not icon previews since the same slow down occurs with small text/bin files. Given that many people have large collections of media files thisbug is a deal breaker for even casual users. It's a disaster in any kind of enterprise situation with large volume data. [Bug 1280719] [NEW] Latest libglib-2.0-0 or libc updates break X.org startup or restore
Public bug reported: Hi, After latest update of the following components from 2014-02-14 : libglib-2.0-0 and libc-bin my X.org always crashes when resuming from a suspend, causing a hard reboot. The strange thing is that the next reboot causes the same thing, and afterwards everything is OK again. Note that the HDD light seems to be always on. I've checked my HDD against smartmontools with long self tests and all is OK on this side. The same apply for my graphic card with some tests. My system : Kubuntu 13.10 AMD64 AMD Phenom x4 9850 Mobo Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe with NForce 570 SLI chipset (*) 8 GB RAM NVidia GeForce 660 Ti with 2 GB of RAM and NVidia 319 binary driver. However my computer starts a normal resume after a suspend, and freezes when the Xorg server appears.
