[Bug 1300004] [NEW] gedit does not elevate privileges while it's being launched
Public bug reported: When I run gedit as normal user and try to change some file inside a system (for example, /etc/fstab) it doesn't allow me to write changes directly to that file. Instead, I can save file in my home directory, then move it on the right place with sudo mv. Other option is to copy it's content inside clipboard, relaunch gedit as root, then paste and save in appropriate place. These paths are not convenient, because I have to do a lot of unnecessary work, searching for the file twice or typing it's location into terminal. Imagine a situation when file cannot be saved and gedit asks for root password and escalates privileges automatically so we can now write directly to that file. Kedit can do this. Can we embed such functionality inside gedit? [Bug 1299999] [NEW] Lao characters not rendering
Public bug reported: when a Lao character has both a vowel and a tone mark above the consonant, the tone mark does not show. consonant with vowel: ມື with tone mark: ม้ with both (tone mark above vowel) มื้ in gedit (as well as firefox and chrome!) the tone mark does not show if there is no white space above the line. a second bug in gedit is that if the consonant is on the last line then cannot enter a vowel below the consonant, eg, ດູ. when you type it, only ດ appears. if you create a line beneath the line, then can go back and type in ດູ correctly. do not think the problem with gedit. if not, please let me know the correct party. this is a huge problem!! it is pretty much blocking used of Ubuntu in the country of Laos except for die hard fans. [Bug 1299784] Re: Alt+F2 run dialog not available any more
Found the dconf setting which makes this available again (org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings.panel-run-dialog). For some reason it was set to ['disabled'] on my test system - no idea why. Setting it back to its default value makes Alt+F2 show the Run dialog again. So this bug report is now merely about making this available by default, or making it configurable in GUI. [Bug 1299836] [NEW] Alt+mouse move doesn't drag window any more
Public bug reported: Under Ubuntu 14.04 beta, in Gnome Flashback Session with Metacity, the Alt hotkey doesn't work anymore for moving windows. In Ubuntu 12.04 pressing Alt key and clicking into a window could be used to move the window; this doesn't work anymore. The shortcut key can be changed away from Alt to Super (Windows) key, eg. using gnome-tweak-tool (Window -> Window Action Key). Interestingly, when configuring Super key, it actually works when pressing the Super key; but when configuring the Alt key it doesn't work. The key can also be changed directly in dconf-editor, under org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.mouse-button-modifier. This allows to set other keys than Alt and Super; and eg. configuring actually makes the Control key usable as Window Action Key; but again when configuring the Alt key cannot be used for window movement. This also affects the other actions available via the window action key (window resizing, and opening window context menu). [Bug 379183] Re: nautilus Unique-DBus-WARNING
I finally fixed this problem for myself, hopefully my experience will help others. I've had the multi-window spawning problem with nautilus in the past (on this host/instance of ubuntu 10.04) but fixed it. And now, late last night I had this problem start up seemingly out of the blue. $ nautilus -q (nautilus:28778): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. As with you guys I had no desktop and no ability to browse with nautilus, and the 'places' menu worked but would not initiate a nautilus browsing session when selecting 'Home Folder' (obviously). Only way to use nautilus for browsing was $ sudo nautilus (dont' do this!--use thunar or dolphin or something) CPU use was running very high and I tried everything I could think of and read every post I could find. What finally ticked in my mind where the references to 'thumbnail-generation' on this thread and it dawned on me that I had used "ubuntu-tweak" to clear my thumbnail cache very near to the time that nautilus started going haywire. So I re-launched "ubuntu-tweak" and cleared my thumbnail cache once more. The results were instantaneous. Nautilus is working fine and my desktop is restored. Things I tried that didn't work include: 1. 'ps aux |grep nautilus' & then 'kill -KILL pid' (resulted in instant respawn with new pid) 2. removing all files from ~/Desktop 3. clear contents of /home/user/.local/share/gvfs-metadata 4. reinstall gnome-session, nautilus, ubuntu-desktop, etc. 5. sudo umount -a -t nfs I haven't restarted the machine yet but am confident my fix will be persistent. Somewhere in the back of my cobweb filled mind is a notion that my previous multi-spawning nautilus issue on this machine was related to nautilus thumbnail cache also, but it's been a while so don't quote me on that. While trying to find a solution it was very helpful to run $ ps aux |grep nautilus (observe the pid of nautilus) $ kill -STOP pid (enter the pid from above command) This causes nautilus to sleep and stop maxing out the CPU. $ uname -a Linux hostname 2.6.32-47-generic #109-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 7 02:02:22 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ cat /etc/*release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=lucid DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS" P.S. [Bug 1299784] [NEW] Alt+F2 run dialog not available any more
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 14.04 beta with Gnome Flashback session with Metacity, the Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut doesn't work anymore. Previously it could be used to open a small Run dialog. Also, in Ubuntu 12.04 this could be configured in System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> System -> "Den Befehl ausführen-Dialog anzeigen" (German for "show the Execute Command dialog"). This is no longer possible; the System category doesn't show any such item any more in 14.04. As a result you can type in characters, but the keystrokes are sent in underneath windows... such as an IRC client. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1291365 Title: gnome screensaver locks again shortly after unlocking To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/1291365/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1299749] [NEW] E4defrag fails to restore parent directory timestamp after defragmenting a file in that directory
Public bug reported: The effect of this bug is quite similar to the one the was reported via bug 1133663 ”Extract Here fails to preserve timestamps for non-empty folders”. Directions to reproduce follow: 1. Create a tar.bz2 archive of a directory containing a fragmented file. One such file might be the 64-bit debian download of google-chrome-stable. 2. Extract that archive to a temporary location that is not on the same partition. 3. Consume some time, a few minutes will do. 4. E4defrag the partition. 5. Observe that the directory timestamp indicates the time that the file was defragmented. The original timestamp was not restored. The --delay-directory-restore flag got the job done for Extract Here. [Bug 1299138] Re: [users-admin] User settings might hang when password is too simple
I could reproduce the bug here on another computer running Xubuntu 13.10 as well. How to reproduce: 1. run users-admin 2. for your user, on the right side at password: click "change" 3. enter the current password, for new password enter e.g. "a12345" twice and click "OK". A popup says "The new password is too simple". Click "Close". 4. Enter the same password twice again, and click "OK" again. I would expect the same message to pop up again, but instead the application hangs: Mouse has the waiting cursor/running circle. 5. You can close the window normally though. [Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.
** Description changed: *** The old PPA, ppa:attente/1218322 is superceded by the following one. You can remove the old repository using ppa-purge. *** A PPA which should provide some relief for this issue is available at https://launchpad.net/~attente/+archive/modifier-only-input-switch. To install: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade (log out, log in) If the packages improve the situation for you, you can pin them using: sudo apt-mark hold compiz sudo apt-mark hold gnome-settings-daemon sudo apt-mark hold unity If the packages don't work for you, you can purge them using: sudo ppa-purge ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch === compiz === Impact: modifier-only key bindings need to be independent of key-press order, there's no support for double tapping two modifier keys of the same type Test case: - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry settings - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source "['Shift_L']" - holding left shift, press and release ctrl -> the current input source should change Regression potential: possible, but highly unlikely, that some key bindings may be triggered due to the removal of some code that would normally prevent a possible tap from occurring. === unity === Impact: gnome-settings-daemon eats modifier-only shortcuts preventing them from propagating down to applications Test case: - open gnome-control-center's text input settings - set the next input source key binding to ctrl+left shift - open gnome-terminal - press ctrl+shift+t -> gnome-terminal should open a new tab Regression potential: the additional input switch key bindings could collide with other functionality such as opening the dash or hud === gnome-control-center === Impact: the UI to change the layout switching keys doesn't work Test case: - open gnome-control-center's text input settings - click on the "next layout key" entry - try entering a key combinaison (e.g ctrl-space) -> the UI should reflect the new keys Regression potential: that UI was not working before, it should only be an improvement (some key combos are not working as expected, that's another issue and shouldn't be mixed with this one) === gnome-settings-daemon === Impact: attempting to change keyboard layouts using only modifier keys doesn't work Test case: - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry settings - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source "['Shift_L']" - press and release ctrl+left shift -> the current input source should change Regression potential: The input switching shortcut might capture other non-modifier shortcuts, but users will need to consider this when choosing their switching shortcut anyways.
