[Bug 1393474] Re: su call in postinst fails with "Killed" when not running from a logind shell

2014-11-17 Thread Martin Pitt
I could never reproduce it with "real" logins, so for now I suspect that
this is due to the rather unusual way of running processes in a VM
directly on a root shell on ttyS1, which circumvents any PAM/logind. I
remember that this also breaks some other tests which expect automatic
ACLs and other things that a proper PAM session provides, so I fixed
autopkgtest to provide a PAM session in all cases:

[Bug 1393474] [NEW] su call in postinst fails with "Killed" when not running from a logind shell

2014-11-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Recent keystone autopkgtest runs (https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of adt-satdep:

[Bug 1393612] Re: Protect against BadUSB device

2014-11-17 Thread Martin Pitt
Removing package for now, as it's not at all clear how to design this
(at least udev is way too low in the stack to even potentially ask the
user anything).

I'm very sceptical of these approaches. Experience shows that popping up
dialog boxes with security related questions à la "are you sure that
..." are at least annoying and rarely productive. And on a server you
usually don't even have a way to interactively ask the user anything on
hardware changes.

If there is a way to detect "malicious" USB devices in some way, we
absolutely should do that, but as versatile as they are, USB devices can
do pretty much anything. They could act as an audio device to record
what you are doing, as a network device to re-route traffic, or as a
malicious keyboard (but that's not even the worst IMHO, as you then
usually see that something funky is going on and yank it out again).

It's nothing new at all that malicious hardware can exist and that
hardware always trumps software in terms of trying to keep each other in
check :-)

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-11-17 Thread John Walker
Totally frustrating trying various 'solutions' that do not make a
difference.

Unable to pair with headset under new 14.04 installation. Having
attempted various recommended downloads, e.g. blueman, bluez, etc. have
progressed to 'seeing' the device after a while, but pairing does not
complete.

This is a Dell laptop. Bluetooth works fine under Windows partition on
this same laptop, so not a hardware issue?

So many red herrings it appears, e.g. firmware?

Need a SOLUTION!

[Bug 1247221] Re: Nautilus doesn't remember setting for showing hidden files correctly when org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden is true

2014-11-17 Thread arkmundi
So I'm one of those kinda lazy just want to go from LTS to LTS upgrades
and have everything work guys - just did the upgrade to 14.04. And am
experiencing this issue. And see no way to edit Nautilus preferences so
default behaviour is keep "hidden files" hidden. The edit->preferences
menu item is hidden when it should be visible and the "hidden files" are
visible when they should not be. Was this a joke?

[Bug 1393463] [NEW] image description / title should be visible via shotwell viewer

2014-11-17 Thread Neal McBurnett
Public bug reported:

When I run from the command line

shotwell /tmp/river-300x224_a.jpg

or when an image is viewed in shotwell via the nautilus file manager,
there is no way to see the description of the image (EXIF "Description" tag).
I can only get a tiny bit of other metadata, e.g. via menu Photo/Adjust date
and time.

Going to the help via F1 and searching for the standard EXIF name:
Description, yields "No matching help pages found in “Shotwell”."
Eventually I found that I should search for "Title", which told me:

The View ▸ Titles checkbox toggles the display of titles beneath each photo.
By default, a photo's title is its filename.
To change a photo's title, select the photo and click Photos ▸ Edit Title, or
press F2.

But there is no View / Titles entry in the menu. A web search finally
led me to the explanation on askubuntu:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/312867/how-to-add-metadata-to-images-
using-shotwell

Which says viewing the description is only available in "Shotwell
itself", not in 'Shotwell photo viewer'. I had no idea that I was not
using shotwell itself or that there were these different interfaces to
the same software.

Viewing descriptions / titles should be provided in the viewer also. As
described by the Library of Congress at

  Adding Descriptions to Digital Photos

http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2011/10/mission-possible-an-easy-way-to-add-descriptions-to-digital-photos/

it is a really important, basic feature to see and add a description to
a photo. Photos without descriptions are missing critical information
that should be easily available to users of the image, and it should be
easy to change. At the least, the menu item should appear and be grayed
out, and this should be explained in the documentation. It is very
confusing to have the documentation list an option which isn't there.

I have the same problem. Can create/delet file from terminal. But
operations from nautilus fails wit "destination read only error". The
other interesting thing is the same usb drive used to work fine with
nautilus till before I made a bootable disk on the usb device using dd.
I tried coping the initial 20MB from another usb. But the "read only"
error persists.

[Bug 1350334] Re: copy/paste garbage while using mc, due to lack of support of bracketed paste mode

2014-11-17 Thread Fuujuhi
Ok, thanks for the info.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant indeed Terminator. I got used to say
gnome-terminator because that was the original name of Tenshu's ppa. But
the real package name is "Terminator".

But note that the bug is also present in "Gnome Terminal" (as per #3
above). Just tried again now, and the bug is there (although I have the
patched vte for GTK2, but indeed this has no effect since Gnome Terminal

[Bug 1350334] Re: copy/paste garbage while using mc, due to lack of support of bracketed paste mode

2014-11-17 Thread Egmont Koblinger
> Also, I'm not sure that even if GT would be migrated to VTE 3, that
it would be pushed to 14.04.

I'm absolutely sure it wouldn't. (It has a preliminary vte3 version,
with many remaining bugs, but you might want to give that a try.)
Someone might create an unofficial repo for this package, though.

I don't know whom to contact, sorry. You'd need to find someone in the
Ubuntu team willing to patch vte2 and backport it to trusty. I hardly
see any chance for this to happen, there are plenty of way more serious
bugs going unnoticed/unfixed by Ubuntu developers. Maybe someone in the
community would be happy to bring up a separate repository containing
this bugfix, you could try to ask for help on various Ubuntu forums.

That's why I recommended the shell prompt hack, that's probably your
best bet now.

(A note about the abbreviation you use: Terminator (the vte2-based app)
as far as I know doesn't have the word "Gnome" in its name, yet you
refer to it as Gnome Terminator, abbreviated with GT, which is damn easy
to be confused with the vte3-based standard Gnome Terminal. To avoid
confusion, I recommend to spell out "Terminator" or "Gnome Terminal" in
this ticket.)

[Bug 1350334] Re: copy/paste garbage while using mc, due to lack of support of bracketed paste mode

2014-11-17 Thread Fuujuhi
I would say *terrifying* work around ;-) Otherwise, good tip.

But to me, the point is that the bug is an annoyance for all systems I
touch. Of course, this ^O thing (or similar) is part of my own process,
so not everybody is concerned, but every time I come to a new system, I
get it, I have to patch it (or work around it), when it would be much
simpler to get it fixed in the repo.

Now, I still agree that your proposal about fixing the bug where it
belongs (i.e. migrate GT to use the new VTE) is the best. But honestly,
I had a quick look, and although I have some dev skills, this is much
beyond me for now. Too many kids at home, not enough time. Also, I'm not
sure that even if GT would be migrated to VTE 3, that it would be pushed
to 14.04.

The easiest for me would be to get the patch above pushed into VTE 2 in
the repo. You say that VTE 2 is unmaintained. But is there any chance
still we can get the patch pushed to the report? What is the process to
get this done? Should I contact anybody?
