[Bug 505765] Re: gedit problem with long lines

2015-03-25 Thread Morgane Roy
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gedit
-

  Hi,

I was editing a text file when the cursor began to behave strangely. The
  file contained these lines:

  CREATE TABLE people(
- integer primary key,
- name varchar(50),
- age integer
+  integer primary key,
+  name varchar(50),
+  age integer
  )

When I put the cursor after the 'l' in 'people', the arrow key would not
move the cursor to the right. Instead it jumped to the next line.
Similarly, I could not add text at this position.

Viewing the file in a hex editor revealed a lot of spaces (284 to be
accurate) after the opening parenthesis. Probably I've added those
spaces without knowing it (resting my book beginning Ruby on the space
bar ^ ^). Still, I feel the editor should handle a few hundred chars on
  a line without misbehaviour.

I attached a copy of the text file.

Thanks for developing and maintaining this simple but useful editor!

[Bug 505765] Re: gedit problem with long lines

2015-03-25 Thread Morgane Roy
Hello,

I fell upon this bug and can confirm that Gedit misbehaves when dealing with a
lot of spaces in a text file. I tested with the provided file the following
way. When treating this string:

'CREATE TABLE people( 240 spaces here idnewline...'

the text is displayed in the following manner

CREATE TABLE people
(240 spaces hereidnewline
...

When the cursor is placed between the 'e' in 'people' and the bracket,
when one hits backspace the line is not moved upwards, but the 'e' is
deleted. In fact the line is never moved up one when the neline char
is deleted.

I think this is kind of weird behaviour. Can someone confirm that this
is not a normal behaviour. If yes, how should gedit behave? IMHO the
line should be moved up one line when between 'e' in 'people' and the
bracket and when one hits backspace.

HTH

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1436467] [NEW] Why is libaccounts-glib0 a hard dependancy of an image viewer?

2015-03-25 Thread George Bateman
Public bug reported:

I don't expect an image viewer to require the single sign-on package. I
should be able to install Shotwell without it, or remove the package
without losing Shotwell. The Debian version does not require it. Please
could you demote the dependency to a recommendation/suggestion?

[Bug 1436434] [NEW] Gedit slow to save text files

2015-03-25 Thread gregreen
Public bug reported:

Gedit takes several seconds to save a simple text file. I would expect
the save to be executed almost instantaneously, since it's a process
that requires next to no computational work, and disk writes of a few kB
shouldn't take more than a few milliseconds. The lag creates problems
when iterating and rerunning code, such as a python script, quickly.

[Bug 1436467] Re: Why is libaccounts-glib0 a hard dependancy of an image viewer?

2015-03-25 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this issue.
This is actually used by the publishing plugin, so it is required:
ldd /usr/lib/shotwell/plugins/builtin/shotwell-publishing.so | grep libaccounts
libaccounts-glib.so.0 =
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libaccounts-glib.so.0 (0x7f1e51cb6000)

Debian doesn't seem to have this library, so it can't build in support
for it. The library itself is only 38k and doesn't bring in anything
that unusual (Depends: libc6 (= 2.17), libglib2.0-0 (= 2.37.3),
libsqlite3-0 (= 3.5.9), libxml2 (= 2.7.4)).

Please report any other issues you may find.

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-03-25 Thread Ryan Tandy
Hi penalvch,

Whether or not this works with xrdp probably depends on how your session
is set up. I just tried installing gnome-session-flashback and xrdp on
the vivid daily CD; the default configuration does nothing, but the
following ~/.xsession:

env DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
=GNOME-Flashback:Unity gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback
--disable-acceleration-check

does load the session. (but the keyboard layout seems wrong somehow...
:/)

If xrdp needs to be adjusted to set this up by default, or documented
somehow, maybe that should be a separate bug against xrdp.

Thanks for your work triaging and testing!

Re: [Bug 1436100] Re: Location reverts periodically to City of Westminster even with wifi and GPS location enabled

2015-03-25 Thread LionelB
To clarify, it turns out that City of Westminster is my GeoIP. That has
changed recently. It used to be Midlands.

On restart, the phone uses that for NearBy.

Expected behaviour would be a. remember last location or b. wait a few
minutes for GPS to get a fix before aksing for the GPS data.

Weather still uses GeoIP. A separate bug ?

I didn’t refresh it while I was there this afternoon. It is 50 miles

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Dmitry Shachnev, thanks for your quick response.

Christopher, why do you think this is a bug in gnome-panel?

I'll let you make the call on what is the root cause package.

Despite this, as per https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel
gnome-session-flashback is provided by gnome-panel (not gnome-session),
which this report was supposed to be scoped to how xrdp'ing (among other
protocols mentioned) doesn't properly present a GUI when using gnome-
session-flashback (and Unity). What I can speak to is the issue that I
thought this bug report was scoped to still isn't addressed.

However, if you find that this report should be re-scoped, I'm happy to
file a new report on it.

I see that gnome-panel is not even started in your screenshot.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. To clarify what you are seeing,
it is my host computer (whose environment is irrelevant, could be
Windows, etc., but happens to be using Ubuntu) using a remote desktop
client (Remmina), remoting into a gnome-session-flashback environment
(the horizontal black/white lines, with a white diagonal line).

I don't have the environment needed for reproducing this so can't look
at it

Have you ever tried virtualization with Virtualbox? It's available via
the Ubuntu repositories, and works quite well. Also, one may setup a
temporary live environment as noted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/1251281/comments/58 .

, but patches are welcome.

As I'm not a developer by profession, nor have that as a background,
this will unfortunately not be coming from me.

Ryan Tandy, thanks for testing to this issue, it is greatly appreciated.

Whether or not this works with xrdp probably depends on how your
session is set up.

Hmmm. All I did was a default install from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ , install xrdp and gnome-session-flashback, log
into gnome-session-flashback and attempt an RDP.

I just tried installing gnome-session-flashback and xrdp on the vivid
daily CD; the default configuration does nothing, but the following
~/.xsession: env DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-Flashback:Unity gnome-session --session
=gnome-flashback --disable-acceleration-check does load the session.
(but the keyboard layout seems wrong somehow... :/)

Unfortunately, I'm not following you here. Could you please provide this
information in a keyboard click-for-click fashion?

As well, just to clarify, making the modifications you advised above
allows you to see an actual desktop GUI (icons, windows, etc.)?

If xrdp needs to be adjusted to set this up by default, or documented
somehow, maybe that should be a separate bug against xrdp.

I already started a support article on xrdp at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/xrdp . Once I can reproduce your
results, I'm happy to put it up there in a keyboard click-for-click
fashion.

[Bug 1436595] [NEW] Images too bright

2015-03-25 Thread Misaki
Public bug reported:

Most images have their values shifted upwards when displayed in eog, and
I don't think it is intentional. Reporting this as a bug is complicated
because I am not sure if some programs, such as eog, change their
display of an image based on screen settings for colorspace or gamma. I
am not an expert on graphics, but something does seem to be wrong.

So at least for my computer, eog seems to stretch out the range just
above a 0 value. A very dark area will have a clear contrast between the
totally black pixels, with a value of zero, and the ones just above it.
In one image I tested, eog did not display any pixels with a value in
the range of 1 to 5, as in the histogram of a screenshot of eog's
display of the image.

In comparison, a screenshot of Firefox's display of the same image had
numerous pixels in the 1~5 range. The GIMP image editor displayed this
image the same as Firefox, with the histogram showing that the pixels
were being displayed without any adjustment.

Basically, if a lot of different programs display things differently and
inconsistently, some of them have to be wrong, and it seems likely that
eog is. Due to inconsistencies, I'm not actually sure what is the
correct, or the best way to display images, which might be different
from the correct way.

Programs used to test, convert, and display images:
imagemagick
ffmpeg (for conversion) and avplay (for display, since ffplay isn't provided on
my distribution)
eog
Firefox
vlc
GIMP

I thought Firefox was displaying non-stripped pngs the same as eog does,
but it's actually slightly different. While gray areas are about the
same as eog, red areas are slightly darker in Firefox.

A description of how various programs display images:
vlc seems to be the same as avplay, and both are different from either Firefox
or eog. Dark red is a bit more like brown or orange, while contrast for
luminosity or luminance (?) seems to be higher; I am just noting that it is
different. This is for a png image.

I thought eog was displaying all images the same way, until I
encountered a png that worked differently. I thought eog was displaying
this png without any adjustments, as it's slightly darker than how eog
displays other pngs, but it's actually slightly darker with more intense
colours than how other programs display the same image. But for all
other images, eog seems to make them slightly brighter.

Firefox displays jpgs without any adjustment, but most pngs are slightly
brighter. As described, this is slightly different than how eog makes
images brighter. If an image is converted with -strip action in
imagemagick, Firefox shows the png without adjustments. A png output
from ffmpeg is also displayed without adjustments. It seems to be
related to the 'png:sRGB : intent=value' property but that would be a
Firefox bug. It's relevant because it seems to adjust the display of
images in a way that's similar to eog, though still different. If a
stripped png is converted again without applying the -strip action
again, Firefox will display it as adjusted; that is, brighter. This is
also part of the evidence that the adjustment in Firefox, and therefore
in eog, is a bug.

GIMP displays images without an adjustment, so darker than eog for most
images.

The 'display' utility from imagemagick displays images the same as GIMP,
without any apparent adjustments.

So GIMP, display from imagemagick, and Firefox all display jpgs as slightly
darker than eog, without mostly skipping over the range of values just above 0.
GIMP and 'display' show most pngs as darker than eog, while Firefox displays
some pngs as darker than eog while others are displayed similar but with
slightly darker reds it seems.

I think all the images I've looked at had 'colorspace: sRGB' in their
properties when I looked at them with 'identify' from imagemagick or
exiftool., so if that's somehow related it doesn't seem like programs
should display images differently. They probably all had 'gamma: 0.45'
in 'identify' (though this shows up as gamma: 2.2 in exiftool I think),
so I don't think that should affect image display either.

For the unusual png that eog displays differently, none of the ways I
used to convert it caused the output to be displayed in eog the same as
the original. These methods included 'convert' from imagemagick with and
without the -strip action; convert with jpg output; ffmpeg with png
output; and GIMP exporting as png with background color and gamma tested
(so four GIMP outputs total). The reason for testing background color
was that 'png:bKGD' is part of the output from 'identify' when the
-strip action isn't used with 'convert', and non-stripped pngs are
treated differently in Firefox so they could potentially also be treated
differently in eog, but as it turned out they weren't treated
differently in eog.

In 'identify's output, the original png does have very slightly
different numbers under Chromaticity, with five of eight numbers
different by

[Bug 954758] Re: can't turn on bluetooth

2015-03-25 Thread Cameron Martin
For me, this problem was caused by bluetoothd not being executable, so
was not running.

I fixed this by running:

$ sudo chmod +x /usr/sbin/bluetoothd
$ sudo start bluetoothd
