[Bug 1616283] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work properly in Ubuntu under LightDM

2016-08-23 Thread Nazar Mokrynskyi
Public bug reported:

When using gnome-settings-daemon instead of unity-settings-daemon (for
instance, in custom session) it doesn't work properly, namely, at least
following things are broken:
* hotkeys (including multimedia keys)
* displays management (gnome-control-center says no displays found)
* laptop blacklight management (when changing brightness level in
gnome-control-center it doesn't have any effect)

Those are the first things I've noticed. However, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and
sound settings seems to work.

I'm on Xenial right now.

[Bug 1608311] Re: Really, really, really, really long logouts in 16.04

2016-08-23 Thread D. Charles Pyle
Just noticed something different happens if I wait. I did the log out
thing once, and when Unity reappeared I did something else thinking it
would stay open anyway. After a few minutes the session logged me off
while in the middle of looking for potential solutions to this problem.
Not expected but that is another aspect of this same situation.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1608311] Re: Really, really, really, really long logouts in 16.04

2016-08-23 Thread D. Charles Pyle
Updates added a new behavior in addition to the one reported above. If
I click the logout item, there is a delay in action as before, and it
appears to logout the Unity Desktop after that, but then Unity reappears
forcing me to click the menu item again to logout. The second logout
attempt then logs out immediately.

[Bug 1615021] Re: Unable to network boot Ubuntu 16.04 installer normally on Briggs

2016-08-23 Thread Steve Langasek
I've thought about this some more, and while the /bin/readlink
/usr/bin/readlink in busybox is a bug, fixing this is definitely not
going to fix the problem in the installer. In the installer,
/etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-setup-link.rules will never exist since this is
an admin override; so the readlink command - if it existed - would still
return false. I'm reasonably sure the lack of /bin/readlink is not
causing the udev rule to behave differently; so it's sufficient to fix
this particular issue for 16.10 and later and not SRU it.

What is *more* of an issue is that the structure of /lib/udev/rules.d/73
-usb-net-by-mac.rules causes a separate call out to readlink for every
single udev event, because the readlink check happens *before* checking
the ACTION/SUBSYSTEM/SUBSYSTEMS attributes of the event, unless
net.ifnames=0 is set.

So regardless of whether this is the root cause of the install failure,
this udev rule is causing hundreds of thousands of extra calls out to
/bin/readlink on boot, which should definitely be fixed by reordering
these checks.

Martin, can you please look into fixing this for xenial+yakkety?

[Bug 1615021] Re: Unable to network boot Ubuntu 16.04 installer normally on Briggs

2016-08-23 Thread Steve Langasek
Examining the initrd shows that readlink is provided as
/usr/bin/readlink -> /bin/busybox, not as /bin/readlink where systemd
expects it (and where it's shipped on an installed system). This is a
bug in debian-installer's construction of that image - though gee it
would be nice if systemd didn't require hard-coded paths to everything.

There's no guarantee that fixing the bug that's causing this error
message will fix the underlying problem preventing your boot, but it
will at least fix the message spam.

[Bug 1614593] Re: gimp freezes at end of cage-base transform

2016-08-23 Thread A. Scheuer
Hello.

I really need some help about this bug: I often have to use the cage-
transform, and have no way to get it working.

I even tried version 2.8.18 (with ppa otto-kesselgulasch/gimp, as given
in doc.ubuntu-fr.org/gimp), but got the same behaviour. I removed my
.gimp-2.8 directory, to check whether it was a configuration problem,
but still the same. I was ready to try version 2.9, but required
packages are tough to get (a lot need a version newer than the one
proposed by Ubuntu).

HELP!

When I start gimp from a terminal, I have a lot of warnings about GEGL (Cannot
change name of operation class 0x... from "gimp:..." to "gimp:...") and a few
errors while parsing XMP metadata (unexpected end of element "exif:Flash", at
line 74 and 96 - Metadata parasite seems to be corrupt) and a final warning
(JPEG - unable to decode XMP metadata packet).
But this does not seem to explain why cage-transform freezes gimp.
