[Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu

2017-03-01 Thread Jeff Kowalski
@Sadi Yumuşak (sa-yu) #31:
I had the same problem you documented, and found it was because of a
conflicting pkg-config. In my case, I had one installed in
~/.linuxbrew/bin/pkg-config, which was picked up in my PATH before
/usr/bin/pkg-config. The solution was to temporarily rename the one in my
linuxbrew so that the one in /usr/bin was used.

@J. McDonald (mcdonald-joseph) #34:
You list the commands you've used, but not their output. I suspect that the
output of autogen.sh is similar to what sa-yu experienced in his note. The
specific error you're seeing from make means that the input file that it
expects by default, which is named Makefile, cannot be found. It is the
autogen.sh script which produces that Makefile. Its failure is likely due to a
problem similar to what sa-yu describes.

@Adam Szmigin (smidge) @28: #28
Fine instructions. I confirm that they work on Linux Mint 18.1 x64.
Just for clarity, readers should know that the command "$ cd
~/path/to/my/build/dir" shouldn't be taken literally. Instead, it's shorthand
for a couple commands like
$ mkdir -p ~/build/libimobiledevice
$ cd ~/build/libimobiledevice

It was working normally, but I did a clean install with Xubuntu 16.04.2

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too

2017-03-01 Thread Carlos
Hey Martin,

It's just an inotify monitor. Read how that works, you will see what's
the performance (close to zero, and everyone uses them, not just
tracker).

Don't take it bad please, but I wouldn't like to spam this bug report
more, we should settle down on basic knowledge about how the kernel
inotify and file system works and its implications and impact on
performance.

Hmm I think there is nothing more new to discuss in this bug report so
far, looking forward to more questions/feedback.

It's hard to make these statements simultaneously be true. There's clearly a
trade-off between correctness and efficiency here. Unless nautilus pokes
tracker to wake up and do a shallow (no previews, etc.) index/force-refresh the
searched-for directory unthrottled right away? Then that would be the
equivalent of a "classic" search, except that the gained data would be
available in the tracker DB for the next time.

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too

2017-03-01 Thread Carlos
Hey Doug,

"it's that it searched/returned 1st character on exactly where as gnome
search does anywhere in the filename exactly"

That's actually a quite good insight, and we can definitely implement it
making higher the "search hit score" to those files that has the
characters positioned in the right place so the result will be in the
same order as type-ahead (given that no other search factors are
involved like filters, FTS etc.). It's actually an easy fix (related
code https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/tree/src/nautilus-
query.c#n357)

Can you report a bug and I will take care of this?

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too

2017-03-01 Thread Carlos Garnacho
Hey Jeremy,

- Initial indexing (How long does it take? Does it make the computer
noticeably less responsive?)

I already tried to reply this to Jorge, it does depend. Depends on the
amount of files and disk throughput.

- Search (Is search in Nautilus more or less responsive with tracker?
How noticeable is the difference?)

Full-text search in Tracker is fairly optimized, plain FTS queries
usually take ~30-50ms across multiple thousands of indexed documents.
This is fast enough for search-as-you-type as nautilus uses it, and
definitely faster than the recursive filename matching paths.

Hi Martin,

- Is it acceptable to have approximate search results if the indexing
isn't (yet) up to date?

If tracker-miner-fs is not paused/throttled down, it will pick up
changes in monitored folders just as fast as any other app, there is
very little extra overhead above the gio/inotify delays.

- Does it significantly affect battery life?

Given Tracker is pretty conservative while on battery, that's a bold
"no".

However "acceptable" or "significant" something is is entirely in the eye of
the beholder. It's not news that there's a trade off between instantness and
cpu/battery, Tracker can't get the best of both worlds at the same time.

- Initial indexing (How long does it take? Does it make the computer

I realize I might have not replied to the "responsiveness" bit. Given
Tracker miners set up themselves with low scheduler/io priority and high
niceness, I expect it to have little impact in perceived responsiveness.

[Bug 1668906] [NEW] systemd occasionally hangs forever while booting: A start job is running for ...

2017-03-01 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,
on several of my machines (encrypted, 16.04 and 16.10) it *sometimes* happens,
that systemd is stuck in booting telling

"A start job is running for dev-mapp...ypt.device (5min 40s / no limit)"
(endless loop, counting the time up)

(only) rebooting helps, but that's annoying and keeps machines from
automated booting.

Additional problem one:
That damned systemd shortens the output to the terminal line length and instead
of telling the device name to give a hint where the problems come from it just
says dev-mapp...ypt.device

Additional problem two:
I've activated systemd's debug shell on Terminal 9 in order to debug the
problem, but the debug shell is rendered useless by systemd, since it blasts
it's messages about the problem to tty9 as well, thus making it impossible to
work there.

Additional problem three:
These device entries seem to be generated dynamically from fstab/crypttab and
not exist as files, so it is not even visible, what's the contents of these
tasks.

Additional problem four:
I did not find a description of a debugging procedure.

So I do not even see how to debug that weird mess. Why on earth has
ubuntu moved to such a confused heap of undebuggable spaghetti code?
