[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-06-29 Thread Seth Arnold
Oh, one more possible confusion -- when a process's parent dies, it is
reparented to pid 1. This guarantees that _some_ process will wait(2) on
every dead child. So seeing 'ppid 1' in a process listing simply means
the process's parent died before you looked for it.

Thanks

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-06-29 Thread Seth Arnold
I believe even Gnome on 16.04 LTS is using the upstart user session
rather than system user session. This could be part of why the Gnome bug
discussion seemed to go around in circles.

Other possible sources of confusion:

- ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc are strictly for shells. Nothing else reads
them. This might work if you start X via the startx(1) tool after
logging in to the console, like the old days.

- Setting umask via GECOS field requires pam_umask(8) to be in the PAM
stack for the service in question. It may or may not be. Check
/etc/pam.d/ files to be sure.

Thanks

Rhythmbox does not correctly interpret the ID3 tags of this mp3 file,
but I have several other files with Chinese ID3 tags which are correctly
interpreted. I believe the difference is that some are encoded using
gb-18030-2000 and others are encoded using UTF-8.

I also utilized a database query for the bucket associated with this
crash to check the dependencies for the libgweather version of crashes
reported in June of 2017. This is the result:

1091 examined.
(u'3.18.2-0ubuntu0.1', 7)
(u'3.24.0-0ubuntu2', 1082)

So the new version does fix the linked crash.

[Bug 1283003] Re: Bluetooth headset/speakers listed but not selectable in Sound settings

2017-06-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package pulseaudio - 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.3

---
pulseaudio (1:8.0-0ubuntu3.3) xenial; urgency=medium

  [Luke Yelavich, Konrad Zapałowicz]
  * Fixed multiple interrelated problems with using Bluetooth audio (A2DP),
where users would experience some combination of:
- Bluetooth headset/speakers listed but not selectable in Sound settings
  (LP: #1283003)
- [regression] Bluetooth audio no longer supports A2DP (stuck in HSP/HFP
  mode) (LP: #1438510)
- [xenial] Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set
  to HSP/HFP first (LP: #1582213)
  * Specific patches from upstream used to address the above problems:
- 0103-bluetooth-Add-support-for-automatic-switch-between-h.patch
- 0104-bluetooth-Add-support-for-automatic-switch-bluez5.patch
- 0106-bluetooth-Add-optional-heuristic-for-switching-betwe.patch
. Backport from upstream to fix a bug in Xenial where an incorrect
audio profile is applied for a headset connected over Bluetooth
making using it impossible.
- 0105-bluetooth-policy-do-A2DP-profile-restoring-a-bit-lat.patch
. Fix a crash that happens if the BT headset is the only non-monitor
source in the system and the last "phone" stream dies.
- 0700-pulsecore-add-new-card-profile-hook.patch
. Backport from upstream (commit 7b6260140149) to allow for correct
profile selection.
- 0701-bluetooth-bluez5-wait-for-all-profiles-to-connect.patch
. Backport from upstream waiting for all profiles to connect before
creating a card.

I have not seen this seen moving from Precise to Trusty. Also not seen
this on Xenial.

I can think of no reason for going backwards to Precise so you can close
this unless someone else is still seeing this on Precise (and Precise is
still supported).

[Bug 1520906] Re: nautilus segfault with gnome-session-wayland

2017-06-29 Thread Kartoch
The workaround #1 does not work for ubuntu 16.04:

output:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome
Before upgrading your system to a new Ubuntu release (i.e. from Ubuntu 16.04 to
16.10), you should run 'ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3' first.

*** You need to run 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' to avoid problems. ***
Please read the output before entering 'Y' to make sure important packages
won't be removed.

Please use 'ubuntu-bug' to report bugs against packages in this PPA

=== End of Life ===
This PPA is no longer updated for releases older than Ubuntu 17.04. If you are
using an older release, please ppa-purge this PPA and consider upgrading to a
newer Ubuntu release.
Unless otherwise posted, updates will only be provided in this PPA for 7 months
from the original release of the associated Ubuntu series.

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-06-29 Thread Greg Williams
Isn't this a gnome-session bug?

In 17.04, setting umask in $HOME/.profile has no effect on the gnome-
session. Setting umask at /.profile does work in 16.04 though.

Setting umask in /.bashrc has an effect ONLY in gnome-terminal apps like
nano and vi. But users still have no way to set default umask for gnome
apps like LibreOffice and gedit.

[Bug 1701243] [NEW] GDM does not work if gnome-session is not installed

2017-06-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Test Case
=
Install Ubuntu 17.10 from a recent daily image.
After install log in.
sudo apt install gdm3
Choose gdm3 when prompted.
Restart your computer.

The bug is that gdm refuses to start

Workaround
==
Install gnome-session

More Info
=
For smoother upgrades and to allow the option of a more vanilla GNOME
experience, it was decided to try to continue to use an ubuntu-session package
by default containing an "ubuntu" session that identifies as "Ubuntu" and runs
GNOME. We don't want or need the GNOME sessions in the default install.

This is more fallout from
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gdm/commit/?id=f66cdfcb so let's try
reverting that change.

[Bug 1696621] Re: Desktop icons slip under the top bar after logging in

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Two interesting observations:

1. nautilus-desktop is an X11 app! It requires Xwayland when run in a
Wayland session.

2. Gnome developers don't like it:

[Bug 1698287] Re: i965-va-driver fails to load in a Gnome Shell Wayland session

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It seems we're loosely in a deadlock on this one...

The i965 VA driver is failing to load because it's using Xwayland.
Xwayland only supports DRI3, while VA-API only supports DRI2. VA-API
does support native Wayland, but that's not being tried by the video
player apps as first preference. You could call it a bug that the apps
choose X instead of Wayland, and that's easily fixable, but according to
the mpv developers people prefer X in the mpv case because a native
Wayland app has no titlebar or window decorations. But by defaulting to
X, it uses Xwayland which does not support the same DRI interface as VA-
API. Hence VA-API initialization fails.

So there are at least a few possible ways forward:
 * Implement DRI3 support in libva (unlikely to happen soon); or
 * Implement DRI2 support in Xwayland (unlikely to happen ever); or
 * Modify each player app to prioritize checking for Wayland before checking
for X11 (rejected by mpv); or
 * Modify each player app to try vaInitialize multiple times (different display
types) until one works.
