@Daniel: please stop adding a bunch of components to one bug if you are
unsure about it. STRUT here isn't the right answer for intellihide, as
it will prevent all windows to go at the dock place. This is the reason
why my duplicated bug report only targetted nautilus and should remain
that way. Cleaning again the component list…

This seems to be caused by the way GNOME Software returns the metadata
to the search. It looks in a "global cache" which doesn't seem to
contain any snap metadata. So the solution is possibly updating the snap
plugin to correctly use this cache.

I can confirm using 17.10 that an unresponsive window does not freeze
the shell, but it does freeze the window's controls and blocks moving
the window etc.

I wonder if you are getting a whole shell freeze or just the app window
(which might feel like the whole shell if it's large). When the problem
occurs, can you tap Super to get to the activities overview?

I'm thinking if you are getting a whole shell freeze then this might be
something that has been fixed between Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10.

What seems to be occurring here:
1. GNOME Shell sends the search term to GNOME Software.
2. GNOME Software does a search for this by passing the search term to each 
plugin.
3. Both the appstream and the snap plugin return results.
4. The IDs are sent back to the Shell.
5. The shell asks for additional metadata on these IDs.
6. For some reason, we don't get data for the snaps, but we do for the 
appstream IDs.
7. Only some of the metadata is returned to the Shell.
8. The Shell ignores all the results because not all the metadata is there

js/ui/search.js:

So if we fix bug 1713929 this would probably not be an issue, but the

Launch Ubuntu Software click on Updates then click on Refresh on top
left. This used to work and populate packages that needed to be updated.
Not any more, just shows message that "Software up to date" yet Update

In this case picking the libav plugin allows subsequent playback of that file.

When gnome software opens there is a warning -

software install?
