[Bug 1721135] [NEW] Z LPAR 17.10 install: Failed to start Login Service messages on first boot after installation

2017-10-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Installation initiated from the HMC using 'Recovery --> Reload from
Removable Media or Server' to select the FTP server and installer. The
menu selection 'Daily --> Operating system messages' is then used to
drive the installation until prompted to log in over ssh to complete the
installation.

Once installation completed and the system booted for the first time,
'Failed to start Login Service' messages were perpetually printed to the
console. See attached logs.

After a second reboot the failure was no longer present.

[Bug 1707831] Re: [enhancement] Replace the "Activities" label with the Ubuntu icon/logo/glyph

2017-10-03 Thread Jesse
I respect Jeremy's (and other Ubuntu devs') positions that the GNOME
documentation refers to the "Activities" text button for the Overview,
and I think that can be helpful to keep it that way IF the users are
going to go to the GNOME documentation, and not search on Ubuntu's
forums, social media, community website, Askubuntu.com, etc. I'd
probably vote that they're going to go for the latter, searching
anything with the word "Ubuntu" Online, first, since Ubuntu is the
distro they're using. New users might not even realize that the desktop
is developed - primarily - by a different organization, entirely. If
that's the case, why would they search for anything other than "Ubuntu
help".

Back in June '17 I ran a poll on the Ubuntu G+ community, asking if
users preferred the Ubuntu logo in the top-left or the "Activities"
text. 169 members voted, and 87% were in favor of using the Ubuntu logo,
with only 13% in favor of keeping the "Activities" text (here's the poll
so you can see the comments, too:
https://plus.google.com/+JesseDuBordFilms/posts/LEjy6zxmNw3).

I'd personally be in favor of replacing the "Activities" text for the
Ubuntu logo in the Ubuntu-modified GNOME shell.

Reasons being:
(1) Brand recognition. Will better allow users and surveyors to identify Ubuntu
on a PC they're passing by in the airport, coffee shop, etc.
(2) WAY less ambiguous (I have a hard time trying to understand why they used
"Activities" for the English word -- can't imagine how it translates in other
languages). Plasma tried using "Activities" as well, which I think is equally
ambiguous. At least if users see that it's a symbol, they could click on it,
see it's behavior, and designate it whatever they want. I feel that makes it
way easier for the user to adopt the desktop as their own if they can even
define it better on their terms, you know?

I do think Jeremy is right, though, that some users might not
instinctively feel it's a button. The Antergos guys did a good job of
putting the background in Blue for the "Activities" text on their theme
of the GNOME shell. Maybe doing something like having the background of
the Activities button the Ubuntu orange with the three white people
aligned in the center of the button? I personally think that would look
really cool, IMHO.

(3) With the Ubuntu-modifications to the GNOME shell, anyways, would it
really be a deal-breaker with the GNOME documentation for it to fit to
be modified a little more to fit Ubuntu's needs? I think it's more than
fair for a brand to be recognized, and - not saying this in any way as
criticism - but I imagine even some of the Ubuntu changes might differ
than the GNOME documentation for the vanilla shell? Would it then be
such a big deal to have something a little different? Again, no
criticism intended at all, just bringing it to the table.

(4) With Ubuntu already offering a vanilla shell experience with the
simple install of a package (you guys rock for that, by the way), would
it really be such a bad thing for Ubuntu to make "their version" of the
shell their own? You're offering both, after all. Maybe even a
disclaimer somewhere might be all you need that says, "The default
desktop in this version of Ubuntu uses a modified version of the GNOME
desktop. Behavior may differ slightly from how the GNOME documentation
depicts", something like that.

Alright, that was already a mouthful. Appreciate you all taking the time
to read, and hope this comment helps in deciding how to proceed.

[Bug 1720250] Re: im-config configuration ignored with gdm3

2017-10-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
As Iain suggested on IRC

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2017/10/03/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t15:52

I checked out what the processes looked like for the two attempts at a
solution, and attached a couple of files with my observations.

Well, not sure what I should look for, to be honest, but that exercise
inspired me to a possible solution: Since gdm3 always starts ibus-daemon
anyway, I added a condition to /usr/share/im-config/data/21_ibus.rc so
im-config does not start ibus-daemon if gdm3 is the DM. That seems to
fix it.

So I have uploaded yet another variant to the PPA.

The bug appears when doing a clean install of Ubuntu gnome, changing the

login screen doesn't show (all black with display on)

The same happens with Ubuntu 17.04 and even 16.04

It turns out that if STP is enabled, then one cannot disable the forward
delay, and a value < 2 is not compatible with STP.

If I set stp: false in netplan, then we get:

# cat /run/systemd/network/10-netplan-br0.netdev
[NetDev]
Name=br0
Kind=bridge

[Bridge]
AgeingTimeSec=250
Priority=22
ForwardDelaySec=1
HelloTimeSec=1
MaxAgeSec=10
STP=false

which results in a proper value in brctl and sysfs matching. (1.00/100

[Bug 1721156] [NEW] networkd does not set bridge forward delay value correctly

2017-10-03 Thread Ryan Harper
Public bug reported:

1) # lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
Release:17.10

2) # apt-cache policy systemd
systemd:
  Installed: 234-2ubuntu10
  Candidate: 234-2ubuntu10
  Version table:
 *** 234-2ubuntu10 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) /sys/class/net/br0/bridge/foward_delay value should be 100 (equivalent to 1
second)

4) /sys/class/net/br0/bridge/foward_delay value is 200 (defaults to 2
seconds)

Configured a bridge in Artful with netplan with the following config:
% cat /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml
network:
version: 2
ethernets:
eth0:
dhcp4: true
match:
macaddress: '52:54:00:12:34:00'
set-name: eth0
eth1:
match:
macaddress: '52:54:00:12:34:02'
set-name: eth1
eth2:
match:
macaddress: '52:54:00:12:34:04'
set-name: eth2
bridges:
br0:
addresses:
- 192.168.14.2/24
interfaces:
- eth1
- eth2
parameters:
ageing-time: 250
forward-delay: 1
hello-time: 1
max-age: 10
path-cost:
eth1: 50
eth2: 75
priority: 22

This generates some runtime network configs:
# cat 10-netplan-br0.netdev
[NetDev]
Name=br0
Kind=bridge

[Bridge]
AgeingTimeSec=250
Priority=22
ForwardDelaySec=1
HelloTimeSec=1
MaxAgeSec=10
STP=true

Note that the value (ForwardDelaySec=1) matches the config yaml; however the
system value from sysfs is not in seconds, but some other factor:

# cat /sys/class/net/br0/bridge/forward_delay
200

And brctl confirms the value in seconds matches the kernel setting
# brctl showstp br0
br0
 bridge id  0016.ea251c32d10e
 designated root0016.ea251c32d10e
 root port 0path cost  0
 max age 10.00 bridge max age10.00
 hello time1.00 bridge hello time 1.00
 forward delay 2.00 bridge forward delay 2.00
 ageing time 250.00
 hello timer 0.22 tcn timer 0.00
 topology change timer 0.00 gc timer 118.63
 flags

I *think* networkd has an update unit conversion bug, looking at the upstream
commit for bridge params support:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/1459

Notice the unit is in Seconds, ForwardDelaySec=288
which results in a 2.88 second setting.

I suspect that our setting of ForwardDelaySec=1 was *too* small
and there is no warning (or it got rounded out in a conversion)

Hrm, I set ForwardDelaySec=150  an I get a sysfs value of 3000, and a
brctl value of 30

ForwardDelaySec=
ForwardDelaySec specifies the number of seconds spent in each of the Listening
and Learning states before the Forwarding state is entered.

That's the manpage entry for netdev devices in systemd. Is it really
being doubled?

[Bug 1624644] Re: By default settings unattended-upgrade is unable to automatically remove packages that become unused in conjunction with updating by other software.

2017-10-03 Thread Brian Murray
Well this does work in Trusty, Ubuntu 14.04, perhaps this is a
regression in support "Never-MarkAuto-Sections"?

One thing to note is that using 'apt-mark' I saw that vino was marked as
manual on Ubuntu 14.04, but automatic on Ubuntu 16.04.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1721141

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1721140] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 beta does not remember display settings

2017-10-03 Thread Owais Lone
Public bug reported:

17.10 beta has issues with remembering display settings. Whenever I
connect my external monitor, I have to change my preferred setup (only
external display active) and preferred resolution. I've to do this
multiple times a day and it is quite frustrating.

I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 on an XPS 13 laptop. My external monitor is a
4k LG connected via the USB type-c port.

I don't remember this being a problem before 17.10 shipped Gnome 3.26 so
probably that's where the bug comes from.

[Bug 1721141] [NEW] Display auto rotates when connecting a PS4 gamepad via USB

2017-10-03 Thread Owais Lone
Public bug reported:

Whenever I connected one of my PS4 controllers to my XPS 13 laptop. The
laptop screen auto rotates to 90% clockwise and then 90% clockwise
again. The laptop ends up with upside down screen. When this happens,
the display settings does not show the orientation option either so only
way for me to fix it is to restart the laptop.

[Bug 1721103] [NEW] Keyboard layout text disappears on selection

2017-10-03 Thread Hadrien
Public bug reported:

Open Setting manager (gnome-control-center)
Select "Country and language" ("Pays et langue" in French)
Click on the list below the "Input sources" label ("Sources de saisie" in
French)

Actual result: the keyboard layout name disappears
Expected result: the list item is selected, the keyboard layout name can be read

The text reappears when the window loses focus.

I'll attach a screenshot (sorry for the colors, the screenshot utility
has a bug).

2017-10-03 Thread Doctor Rover
Jeremy Bicha, thank you for the prompt response and for your and the

The argument is absolutely reasonable, so I can only agree with the decision to
postpone the fix until 18.04 cycle.
Will wait for the changes in Rosetta)

[Bug 1629600] Re: Installed application from .deb does not appear unless Ubuntu is restarted

2017-10-03 Thread Hadrien
I tried with Ubuntu 17.10 and a .deb package I propose here:
http://psydk.org/pngoptimizer

The application does not appear unless gnome-software is killed.
After I restart gnome-software, it appears in the Graphics section and if I
specifically search for it. However it does not appear in the "Installed" view.

[Bug 1721092] [NEW] systemd-resolved and dns-masq make CPU 100% when using lxc name resolution

2017-10-03 Thread Alex Garel
Public bug reported:

This bug may be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/1688364 but I'm
not sure, hence this new entry.

It hits while I wanted systemd to resolve the lxc domain to my internal
lxc hosts.

Step to (maybe) reproduce:

- having lxc installed
- make some user space lxc container
- uncomment the line LXC_DOMAIN="lxc" in /etc/default/lxc-net
- restart lxc-net service

Now the dnsmasq on 10.0.3.1 should be a dns resolving lxc names.

- add a file /etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/lxc.conf

  [Resolve]
  DNS=10.0.3.1
  Domains=~.lxc
  DNSSEC=false

- restart systemd-resolved service

Now systemd knows it should ask .lxc names to dnsmasq

- start an lxc container, let assume it's called my-container
- ping it using my-container.lxc it should work

After some times, systemd-resolved should use 100% CPU.

Commenting the /etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/lxc.conf file and restarting
it makes systemd-resolved never eating resources again.

[Bug 1721049] [NEW] "Got unknown content type text/html" error viewing flatpack packages

2017-10-03 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

Whenever I view a Flatpak package in gnome-software, an in-app
notification appears saying:

> Sorry, something went wrong
> Got unknown content type text/html from reviews.ubuntu.com

Since this is modal, I then need to dismiss it before being able to do
anything else.

[Bug 1719462] Re: [Translation] "Left" and "Right" must be translated differently in different contexts

2017-10-03 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The Ubuntu Desktop Team discussed this bug today. It is too late in
Ubuntu 17.10's release cycle to make this change since it will break
translations for these strings for all languages, and many of those
languages would end up untranslated for 17.10.

We can make this change early in 18.04's release cycle. I apologize for
the inconvenience.

2017-10-03 Thread Doug McMahon
this is closest Debian bug found,

However Debian has moved on to 2.7.3-4 so maybe no movement will be seen there.
Installing 2.7.3-4 here also produces expected results so likely 18.04 will be
better..

[Bug 1720954] [NEW] Progressbar in copy file to USB-Drive shows wrong information

2017-10-03 Thread einfach
Public bug reported:

Progress bar should show how much of file was written on USB/Drive not how much
of file was read into cache(or buffer). this causes that progress bar goes
really quick to 100% and then friezes. Which causes data loss, if user unmount
usb drive at 100%.
PS. there was another bug reported in 2009 and 2011. but there is no solution.
its very frustrating that that small bug which costs so little time to solve
and makes usability of system MUCH better, takes almost 10 years to solve.
PPS. please solve finally this problem, so I can further recommend Ubuntu to my
less experienced friends.
