[Bug 1728045] Re: Please restore battery time remaining to top bar!

2017-10-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It might be a design choice though, to keep the panel bar "clean".

I believe you can still see estimated battery time remaining if you
click on the panel menu (top right?).

[Bug 1727356] Re: Wayland does not start up on "Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) G33": Shader compilation failed

As the G33 graphics chipset is 10 years old it will be difficult for
developers to find hardware to test on. And unlikely very many users

We definitely want to fix this, but calling it High importance is

[Bug 1714989] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast() from st_label_set_text() from ffi_call_unix64() [Global App Menu specific?]

2017-10-29 Thread Daniel Playfair Cal
I also experience this crash. I don't have global app menu installed but
for me the crash occurs when the following line of code is being
executed in the Freon shell extension: https://github.com/UshakovVasilii
/gnome-shell-extension-
freon/blob/f9756b2430b3766c3d21d71e9928963032617bf7/freon%40UshakovVasilii_Github.yahoo.com/extension.js#L360

I've attached a valgrind log of the crash occurring. There is a whole
lot of seemingly related bad memory access before the crash occurs.

For me it happens sometimes immediately after logging in, but before the
shell successfully loads. I assume it only happens if the Freon
extension is installed. I'm on version 29 of the freon shell extension.

Actually it sounds like in a Wayland world, the individual apps might
have to display this information themselves. So that's also an

Presently, I have two F24 systems which I upgraded from F22. In F22, I

What I have after upgrading to F24 is one system where I get no

dimensions tooltips, but for gnome-terminal the dimensions are now in
pixels.

I'd love to help troubleshoot this so we can get it fixed. Please let me

Issue appears to have been resolved for both of current Fedora 24 and Fedora 25
with the standard setup of GDM (running on top of Wayland). I have checked for
Fedora 24 running inside a virtual machine:
- window geometry is shown when choosing GNOME on Xorg session.
- window geometry is not shown GNOME (on Wayland) session.
For Fedora 25, the issue is gone both when running on bare metal and inside a
virtual machine.

All, you're not helping the situation by unmarking this as a duplicate.

The first report was bug 1721315. The correct developer was assigned to
bug 1721315. And the correct upstream bug link was assigned to bug
1721315. And bug 1721315 is the only one correctly formatted already in
such a way that a fix can be backported to 17.10 (SRU).

I've duplicated the upstream link in here now, but I think this bug
should be closed as a duplicate of bug 1721315.

mean it's closed anything though. Try Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get back to your

[Bug 1728474] [NEW] ctrl-alt-f1 closes all running programs

2017-10-29 Thread themusicgod1
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10 artful when I go to tty via alt-ctrl-f1,
I am presented with a gdm3 login screen. This in and of itself is OK,
as long as it's a lock screen. But it's not - all of my running
programs were closed(most of them without saving).

This makes the desktop behave similar to a phone, so I could see this as
being a potential feature to some...but for those of us running servers
and all kinds of programs, with 1000s of tabs open...it's kind of an
abrupt surprise to enable by default

end result

actual behaviour:
alt-ctrl-f1 logs out & closes all running applications

desired behaviour:
alt-ctrl-f1 either does nothing (if you are on tty 1) or locks the screen, does
not close all running applications.

[Bug 1716633] Re: /usr/bin/gnome-software:11:g_str_equal:g_hash_table_lookup_node:g_hash_table_insert_internal:find_snaps:gs_plugin_add_popular

2017-10-29 Thread Robert Ancell
I thought that each plugin was only accessed by the same thread, but it
turns out this is not the case. This crash seems to be due to these
multiple threads accessing the snap cache. This is now protected with a
lock.

** Description changed:

- Potentially a regression introduced by gnome-software
- 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.6
+ [Impact]
+ GNOME Software has a cache that can be accessed by multiple threads. This can
cause GNOME Software to crash. This seems to have been caused by adding support
for featured snaps (bug 1663097) as the popular, featured and installed snaps
are all requested on different threads.

- The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding
gnome-software. This problem was most recently seen with package version
3.22.7-0ubuntu3.17.04.7, the problem page at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/b8d914cec850474446873c5a60feba99b1d498d9
contains more details, including versions of packages affected, stacktrace or
traceback, and individual crash reports.
- If you do not have access to the Ubuntu Error Tracker and are a software
developer, you can request it at http://forms.canonical.com/reports/.
+ [Test Case]
+ Since this is a random crash there's not a good test case. Could be checked
by looking at errors.ubuntu.com crash reports or repeated restarts of GNOME
Software to see if it crashes on startup.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Solution is to add a lock around this cache. Some risk of breaking related
code.

** Summary changed:

-
/usr/bin/gnome-software:11:g_str_equal:g_hash_table_lookup_node:g_hash_table_insert_internal:find_snaps:gs_plugin_add_popular

[Bug 1728461] [NEW] Python GC destroys PyGObject with external references

2017-10-29 Thread Cédric Bellegarde
Public bug reported:

PyGObject traverses its closures in tp_traverse, but the lifetime of the
closures
is tied to the lifetime of the GObject and not the wrapper. This confuses
the Python GC when it sees a ref cycle and tries to break it up with tp_clear.
Since tp_clear will not invalidate the closure and only invalidate the Python
wrapper the closure callback gets called with the now cleared/invalid object.

This bug make python gtk programs to segfault randomly.

Patch available here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731501

Should apply to 3.24 or be easily backported: one line patch adding a if
statement.

[Bug 1728455] [NEW] Inputting in Chrome URL Bar Triggering UI Freeze, pegged CPU and Major Memory Leak

2017-10-29 Thread Victorzwl
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 17.10 (Linux weilong-Ubuntu 4.13.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP
Wed Oct 11 18:35:14 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

GNOME version: GNOME Shell 3.26.1
Chrome version: Version 62.0.3202.75 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Description:

This may very likely have something to do with my Chinese input method
(iBus). I encounter this consistently while the system input method is
Chinese (WubiHaifeng86) but the mode within the input method is English.

Inputting in Chrome URL bar is triggering UI freeze and major memory
meak. The whole UI freezes and won't respond to either mouse or
keyboard. Can't switch to console by Ctrl+Alt+Fx. Was able to ssh in
from another machine and gather information.

Reproduce Steps:

1. Switch system input method to Chinese (WubiHaifeng86)
2. Switch to English inputting mode (while system input method is still
Chinese).
3. Open Chrome
4. Input some characters in URL bar and the bug should occur. If not, use
Backspace to delete some and input some more.

(Sometimes swapping step 2 and 3 might help reproduce the issue.)

[Bug 1728445] Re: DNS not working for IPv6-only host names when using Miredo

2017-10-29 Thread Steve Langasek
systemd-resolve is not part of resolvconf, it is part of systemd;
reassigning.

A possible quick fix is to modify the /etc/nsswitch.conf:

Or even remove "resolve" completely: "hosts: ... dns"

We are not installing libnss-resolve by default in Ubuntu, we are using
systemd-resolved as a DNS resolver only. Perhaps the solution for you
is to remove the libnss-resolve package from your system? Why do you
have it installed?

[Bug 1728445] [NEW] DNS not working for IPv6-only host names when using Miredo

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When IPv6 is only available using "miredo" (I don't know about the case
of native IPv6) "systemd-resolve" seems not to query for entries
when AF_UNSPEC or simply a NULL pointer is passed to getaddrinfo().

This has the effect that tools that support both IPv4 and IPv6 and use
AF_UNSPEC or NULL will simply fail to connect IPv6-only servers when the
name has to be resolved via DNS.

(The problem was occurring with the Firefox web browser.)

(The record is however queried if AF_INET6 is explicitly passed to
that function.)

A possible quick fix is to modify the /etc/nsswitch.conf:

Before: "hosts: ... resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns"
  After: "hosts: ... resolve dns"
Or even remove "resolve" completely: "hosts: ... dns"

However it would be better to create the possibility to configure how
the system should behave in the case of AF_UNSPEC:

- Only ask for the A record
- Only ask for the record
- Ask for both, prefer A
- Ask for both, prefer

2017-10-29 Thread tom
Jeremy, that's great. I marked the other bug as a duplicate, which it
is. This is a better, more thorough, more correctly-worded bug. I agree
that people can and should work on fixing a duplicate bug. That is a
separate question from which bug should be marked duplicate. This bug is
also correctly attributed to the part of Ubuntu that needs to be fixed
(Not Ubuntu at all, but GNOME).

[Bug 1728450] Re: Details are not visible by default and hide important configuration

2017-10-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I believe you'll find that if you change your theme to Ambiance (the
default in the Ubuntu session), the Settings sidebar is tall enough to
show all items without a vertical scrollbar.

The sidebar being too short by default is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/789372

Discussion about ordering and grouping the panels is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/786810

Since they are really two separate issues, could you please split this
into another bug?

[Bug 1728450] [NEW] Details are not visible by default and hide important configuration

2017-10-29 Thread Paul Smith
Public bug reported:

When I open the gnome-control-center, I see the following menu items
down the left side: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Background, Notifications, Search,
Region & Language, Universal Access, Online Accounts, Privacy, Sharing,
Sound, Power, Network, Devices (with a sub-menu). Screenshot attached.

If I happen to move my mouse into the menu area I _may_ notice a very
thin "scroll area" show up briefly before it disappears again, or I
_may_ notice very subtle dotted lines at the bottom of the menu, and I
_may_ notice that there is actually another menu item at the bottom that
I have to scroll down to see: Details.

And if I happen to find that and click on that sub-menu, I will find
critically important items in there such as Date & Time configuration
(what I was looking for to get an AM/PM clock, and couldn't find at
all), Users configuration (couldn't find that either so had to add users
by hand from the CLI), and Default Applications (also important so I can
change the default mail client etc.)

What does "Details" even mean? This menu might as well be named
"Miscellaneous". Really that would be MORE helpful: at least it would
be clear that there's a bunch of random stuff below that menu, which is
the reality. The only thing in "Details" that feels appropriate to the
name is the "About" menu.

I really like the format change of gnome-control-center from the "rows
of icons" to the left-side menu: it looks nice and avoiding the "go back
and select something else" by just clicking along the left side is a
very pleasant experience. But the menu organization here is really
confusing and hard to use, and needs serious attention.

There needs to be enough top-level menus to be sure everything fits on
the screen without scrolling.

The About menu item should be on the top-level menu at the bottom of the
list... people think it's not important but it's actually REALLY
important, so inexperienced people can easily obtain critical system
details when asking for help.

And the grouping of these menus needs love: for example, why is "Wi-Fi"
a separate menu item from "Network"? I would think that Wi-Fi, Network,
Online Accounts and Sharing could all be combined into one sub-menu like
"Internet" or similar. Actually I don't have a Wi-Fi adapter in my
system so I don't know what shows up there: maybe "Wi-Fi" is more about
the hardware, and belongs under "Devices"? Either way.

Also I think "Region & Language", "Universal Access", and possibly "Date
& Time" could be grouped together.

And "Background", "Privacy", and "Notifications" could be grouped under
some sort of "desktop" menu. Or maybe "Region & Language" would stay a
top-level item and "Universal Access" and "Date & Time" would be added
to "Desktop".

Anyway. I realize there are lots of ways to chop these items up and
people will have disagreements, but the current situation is really very
not good: the control center needs to avoid the need for scrolling to
see all the options and if things are moved into sub-menus the names of
those menus HAVE to be evocative and clear.

When I try to add online calendar (Settings -> Add -> From Web) in "Add
calendar" dialog, button "Add" stays disabled when I enter URL.
If I download the calendar and add it via "From file" method, everything works.

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-10-29 Thread CaptSaltyJack
You're right :) I skipped the nvidia part. Just wanted to see how the VM
would behave if I purged gdm. Then I realized lightdm was not installed,
so that would be an extra step on that list.

Thanks, everyone

The VM would be using VirtualBox drivers, not NVIDIA - so I don't think
your problem is related!

[Bug 1728421] [NEW] Update gtk+3.0 to 3.22.25

2017-10-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
==
There is a new gtk3 release, 3.22.25.

Highlights
--
* Allows dropping these cherry-picked patches:
  - 0001-Adwaita-Fix-typo-.backgrounf-.background.patch
  - 0002-theme-Fix-Adwaita-headerbars.patch
 - 0003-display-x11-Unset-tiled-state-if-_GTK_EDGE_CONSTRAIN.patch
* Fixes crash with GNOME Online Accounts (LP: #1720400)
* Support KDE SSD (server-side decorations) handling on Wayland
* Restores middle-click to do the opposite of primary (usually left-) click in
scrollbars, GTKRange
* Some theme fixes for the gtk3 High Contrast theme
* Allow more key buttons in the GNOME Settings > Keyboard panel to be
translatable
* A fix to not show duplicate printers in some cases
* Improves the GNOME 3.26 tiling feature for GNOME Terminal

For more changes since 3.22.24, see
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/log?h=gtk-3-22
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/tree/NEWS?h=gtk-3-22

Test Case
=
Install the update. Run a variety of apps in the default Ubuntu install with
the Ambiance theme.

Also check that the Adwaita and High Contrast themes still look ok. You can
change the theme with the GNOME Tweaks app (gnome-tweak-tool). For the window
buttons to look as designed, you should change the icon theme to Adwaita when
you set the theme to Adwaita or High Contrast. Afterwards, you can reset your
theme back to the defaults with
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme

Regression Potential

Quite a few changes, but mostly it's bug fixes.

Earlier gtk3 releases had some regressions (that's why we had those
cherry-picked patches), but that was mostly related to the late GNOME
3.26 tiling feature that was rushed in. This release does not have any
major new features like that.

Unfortunately, very few people run gtk3 from git master so regressions
often aren't seen until distros start shipping the gtk3 update.

The GNOME stack has an SRU Micro-release exception
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#GNOME

We haven't done micro-release SRUs for gtk3.22 yet. This might be a good
trial run to see how well it works before 18.04 LTS. Fedora does keep
their gtk3 up to date throughout the life of their releases.

[Bug 1726922] Re: gnome-calendar keeps asking for my google password

2017-10-29 Thread Jeff Burns
Here is the workaround for people coming into this bug with Two Factor
Auth set. You need to generate an application specific password for the
Google acct in "Online Accounts" from this page:
https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords

Google's full documentation on generating application specific passwords
for applications that aren't compatible with MFA:
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

I saw this as well, and set an app specific password to get around it,
but it would be nice if I didn't have to use that workaround. :)

[Bug 1728380] Re: File search does not search recursively Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Run this command in a terminaL:

sudo apt install tracker

Log out and log back in.

You can configure indexed folders in Settings > Search > gear button.

tracker was not installed by default in Ubuntu 17.10 because of worries
about performance. See LP: #176. I am hoping that it will be
reconsidered for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Please reply here if that solves your problem.

[Bug 1728384] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes when searching files

2017-10-29 Thread Noam Mor
Public bug reported:

I observed that gnome-shell crashes when I tried to load the Software
Sources application. After a bit of trial and error it turned out that
the crash only occurs if searching files is enabled in Settings. I can
reliably trigger the crash by typing "so" into the search box.

Sometimes only the search window crashes, leaving all windows open.
Other times Gnome crashes, returning me to the login screen after around
20 seconds.

When the files search is off, no crash is observed.

Attached is a syslog excerpt for the crash. It has two searches - I
searched for "s", and then I searched for "so", both with Files search
on. The crash occurs after the second search.
