[Bug 1725649] Re: Fullscreen games lose "fullscreen" after an Alt+Tab

2017-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Ads2, I was able to reproduce the issue (and added a test case to
the bug description). I have uploaded a new version of mutter to the
artful queue where it will need to be manually approved by a member of
the Stable Release Update team before it will be available as a
-proposed update. If there are no regressions and the update seems to
work, it will be released to all Ubuntu 17.10 users a week or so after
that.

The bug status says "Fix Released" for Ubuntu because it's fixed in the
development version of Ubuntu. It's still "In Progress" for Ubuntu

[Bug 1719043] Re: Gnome web urlbar very slow to show typed input

2017-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I verify that the totem regression cannot be reproduced with the new
gtk+3.0 3.22.25-0ubuntu0.1 SRU. Since this bug is being fixed in mutter
instead, I am closing the gtk+3.0 part of this bug.

** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
It is very difficult to use the address bar in Epiphany on GNOME on Wayland
because after a few characters, the address bar field stops redrawing. (This
apparently was triggered by mutter 3.26?)

  Test Case
  =
  sudo apt install epiphany-browser
  Open the Web app
Type a URL into the address bar. Type a lng URL.
You should see all the characters you type into the address bar.

  Regression Potential
  ===

optimization commit applied earlier in 3.26 development. We also needed to
revert a test change to match.
-

+ To fix this issue, an optimization commit applied earlier in 3.26 development
was reverted. This fix is part of mutter 3.26.2 (LP: #1730097).

  Other Info
  ==
- The first SRU gtk+3.0 3.22.24-0ubuntu2 caused a regression seen in totem and
so was reverted in both gtk upstream and in the next SRU 3.22.24-0ubuntu3.
+ The first SRU gtk+3.0 3.22.24-0ubuntu2 caused a regression seen in totem and

[Bug 1725649] Re: Fullscreen games lose "fullscreen" after an Alt+Tab

2017-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
Using Alt-Tab to leave a fullscreen game and then return breaks the game by
offsetting the display by the size of the GNOME Shell top bar.

  Test Case
  =
  1. Run a game full screen.

I installed Steam and used Team Fortress 2 because it's free (but a very
  large download)

  2. Press Alt-Tab to switch to another window and then press Alt-Tab to
  switch back to the game.

The game should display and function normally.

  Regression Potential

- This is fixed by cherry-picking 3 patches from the gnome-3-26 mutter branch.
We are eventually expecting a mutter 3.26.2 release but I don't think there is
a planned release date yet.
+ This is fixed in mutter 3.26.2 (LP: #1730097)

These patches also fix LP: #1725821 but I was having trouble coming up
with a specific test case for that issue that I could reproduce with my
  Intel graphics card.

The upstream bug mentions that this may re-introduce tearing with full-
screen videos with Firefox because Firefox disables hardware graphics
acceleration on Linux. Personally, I feel that is a Firefox bug and
shouldn't block this fix. (The workaround for that is to visit
about:config in Firefox and set layers.acceleration.force-enabled to
  true and restart Firefox.)

The issue of poor performance with full-screen games with GNOME 3.26 (a
regression from GNOME 3.24) is a popular complaint in forums and should
  be fixed by these patches.

[Bug 1724024] Re: can't set usable scale for hidpi internal display if when using external display less than 1600x1200

2017-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Users on X11 are unable to set sane configurations for mixed hidpi/lowdpi
multi-monitor setups. A limitation in Mutter prevents gnome-control-center
(and any other users of the dbus api or monitors.xml) from changing even
unrelated display settings unless 1x scaling factor is chosen. There is no
user-facing reason why, the settings just won't apply.

This applies to X11 and not Wayland. All NVIDIA users and some others
who require X for the time being are affected when using mixed-dpi
setups. This especially affects System76 customers, since the patch is
required for the automatic multi-monitor setup to work.

  [Description]
When plugging in an external 1920 x 1080 monitor to a laptop with a hipdi
screen (e.g. 13" 3200x1800), mutter automatically configures the two displays
next to each other and keeps the 2x scale factor.

If the user sets the scale factor (using the control center, the dbus
api, or the monitors.xml file), they will be stuck at 1x and everything
will be tiny on the internal display. It's not possible to set the
scale factor back to 2x, and any attempts to do so will result in mutter
complaining that "Logical monitor scales must be identical" or "Scale 2
  not valid for resolution 1920x1080".

The user can't even move the external display from the right of the
internal to the left without selecting 1x scaling. The configuration
  simply won't apply.

Mutter prevents applying a scale to a logical display if it would result
in a logical resolution less than 800x600. On X11, all displays must
  have the same scaling factor.

The primary reason to prevent setting a too-high a scale factor is that
a user may get stuck in an unusable state. The proposed patch, enables
Mutter to apply a given scale factor if at least one display supports
  it.

  [Test Case]
  1) Install Ubuntu 17.10 on a laptop with a hidpi display. By default, Gnome
should be correctly scaled at 2x. If you have previously configured this
setup, you will have to delete the monitors.xml file and reboot.
  2) Plug in a 1920x1080 monitor.
At this point, both monitors should be scaled at 2x because Mutter has not
received a request to change the display configuration.
  3) Now open gnome-control center and attempt to change a display setting like
moving the external 1920x1080 display from the right to the left side of the
internal display. This should be a valid thing to do. However, there will be
no apply button.
  4) Now, set the scale factor from 2x to 1x. The apply button will now show.
Clicking apply will make the external display the right scale, but everything
will be very tiny on the internal display.
With the patch, you should be able to make changes without switching from 2x
to 1x.

  [Regression Potential]
Potential regressions are likely to manifest in the checking of display scale
factors. It's possible that corner cases exist where a user might be able to
apply a scale factor that's too big/small for their use. However, the current
situation is already a regression from Ubuntu 17.04 that prevents proper
monitor configuration.

- The patch has been accepted upstream into mutter's gnome-3-26 branch.

[Bug 1730097] Re: Update mutter to 3.26.2

2017-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
+ New bugfix release in the 3.26 stable series.
+
+ - Fix unredirecting full-screen windows and fix returning to
+ full-screen after Alt-Tab (LP: #1725649)
+ - Allow HiDPI scaling even when non-HiDPI displays are connected (LP:
#1724024)
+ - Fix Epiphany URL bar (LP: #1719043) (Closes: #875826)
+ * Drop cherry-picked patches
+
+ mutter is used by GNOME Shell and Budgie, so this update affects the
+ Ubuntu and Ubuntu Budgie flavors.
+
+ https://git.gnome.org/browse/mutter/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-26
+ https://git.gnome.org/browse/mutter/log?h=gnome-3-26

  Test Case
  =
  Install the updates.
  Restart your computer.

  a. Log in to Ubuntu.
  b. Also make sure that Ubuntu Budgie still works

  Regression Potential

+ Mutter is required for the login manager (gdm3) and default desktop so a
severe enough regression could lead to some users being unable to use their
computer except from a virtual terminal.
+
+ On the other hand, other GNOME 3.26 distros are shipping this update and
+ it fixes several important issues.
+
+ There is a micro-release exception for GNOME:

[Bug 1730093] Re: Gnome suspends or blanks external monitor when laptop is docked

2017-11-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Just to make sure, I again repeated the sequence of events outlined
above on the stock 17.10 kernel:

Linux magpie 4.13.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 11 18:35:14 UTC
2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The behavior is identical to that reported above.

One minor elaboration: when I open the control panel->Devices->Displays
with the lid action set to "ignore", I have to toggle the external
monitor, even if it is currently selected, in order to prevent the lid
close from blanking the display.

[Bug 1730093] [NEW] Gnome suspends or blanks external monitor when laptop is docked

2017-11-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

In the default configuration, resuming my T440s on the Lenovo ultradock
results in not detecting the external monitor followed by a suspend.

If I open the lid while on the dock, gnome detects the external monitor
and blanks the laptop display. Then, closing the lid results in
suspend.

As a work around, using tweak tool (or UPower) to ignore the lid, does
prevent the suspend. But it is not automatic; each time, one must bring
up the gnome control panel->devices->displays and manually select single
display. Then the lid may be closed without suspend.

This worked fine in 17.04, so I'm hoping that the provides enough clues
that this can be fixed easily.

Thanks! I am enjoying the new Ubuntu 17.10 generally, but this
situation is annoying.

System details:

linux magpie 4.13.9-041309-generic #201710211231 SMP Sat Oct 21 16:32:44
UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm trying a kernel from mainline, just to see if that matters; it
doesn't. Same behavior on stock 17.10 kernel.

[Bug 1730091] [NEW] session freezes/hangs after undetermined amount of time

2017-11-04 Thread Nathanel Titane
Public bug reported:

Currently using the default wayland session on 17.10: the computer
eventually hangs/freezes after an undetermined amount of time, whether
it'S still powered on and unused or when put on standby. Resuming the
session is impossible as the device is frozen and needs to bee reset
with power button.

Critical bug as the issues has provoked major data loss and work in
progress loss.

Possibly a functional regression due to the use of wayland or the newer
kernel provided with this release.

In my case, the header files for the lowlatency kernel were not

Hmm. What I did was load into recovery mode which allowed me to install and
uninstall packages - there I uninstalled lightgdm and ran the suggested
dpkg-config command to setup gdm.

[Bug 1730072] [NEW] Gnome Night Light doesn't work

Public bug reported:

I have a similar issue as this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-

Gnome Night Light doesn't work on my system: Asus UX301L Notebook using
Ubuntu 17.10 with the latest updates.

It used to work and suddenly stopped working but I can't remember at
what period exactly. I think it was before the official release...

[Bug 1728383] Re: Unable to create a DBus proxy for GnomeScreensaver

2017-11-04 Thread Melanie Bacou
Same happened to me few days ago and I could no longer log into Wayland
(only X11). This happened after installing TLP on a Thinkpad X201:

4:28:36 AM pulseaudio: [pulseaudio] bluez5-util.c: GetManagedObjects() failed:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.bluez':
timed out
4:28:31 AM systemd: Failed to start Postfix Mail Transport Agent (instance -).
4:28:10 AM gnome-session-b: Unrecoverable failure in required component
org.gnome.Shell.desktop
 4:28:10 AM gnome-shell: X Wayland crashed; aborting
4:28:09 AM gnome-session-b: CRITICAL: Unable to create a DBus proxy for
GnomeScreensaver: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.ScreenSaver:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process
org.gnome.ScreenSaver exited with status 1
 4:28:09 AM NetworkManager: ((src/devices/nm-device.c:1452)): assertion
'' failed
4:28:08 AM avahi-daemon: chroot.c: open() failed: No such file or directory

Removing TLP fixed the issue though.

I use wayland session not xOrg. Please let me know if I can run some
command and give you output to give you more information. I have not
changed any theme or session. I am using what ubuntu 17.10 installed on
