[Bug 1788345] [NEW] ubuntu-session not a dependency of unity

2018-08-21 Thread bhs
Public bug reported:

Assuming lightdm preinstalled in the system, Installing unity does not
enable using ubuntu unity desktop.

To get things working, package ubuntu-session needs to be separately
installed.

To improve installation experience, best to make ubuntu-session a
dependency of unity package because there are no other valid
combinations like lxsession & unity.

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing any global keyboard shortcut causes temporary loss of focus

2018-08-21 Thread Ivan Ivanov
It is strange this is a known issue for 4 years and there is still not
resolved. It is highly annoying as end user to lose window focus all the
time I switch languages, which is common for bilingual environments. Do
I really need to recompile X to remove an issue, which I observed only
on Gnome Shell? There are two Ubuntu LTS releases with this annoyance
and now Gnome Shell is the main DE.

2018-08-21 Thread Impulze
The patch applied to Ubuntu Lucid and proposed in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/293832/comments/107
fixed the very same issue for me with a Brother MFC 7820N.
Any comments on the validity and correctness of the patch so we might get it
fixed in poppler if it's really not a driver issue?

mpv (0.29.0-1ubuntu1) cosmic; urgency=medium

  * Rewrote 08_fix-lp1698287.patch to work with the latest mpv source code,
allowing VAAPI to work in Wayland sessions out-of-the-box. (LP: #1698287)
  * Reintroduce mpv.conf.ubuntu to enable VAAPI acceleration by default.

[Bug 1788322] [NEW] Approximately every 2mins this is written to syslog - rsyslogd: action 'action 3' resumed (module 'builtin:omfile') [v8.32.0 try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2359

2018-08-21 Thread chris pollock
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure this is a bug but instead is a configuration option missing
in the /etc/rsyslog.conf.

This is on a Ubuntu 18.04.1LTS system that was upgraded last week from
16.04.5LTS. The version of rsyslog installed is:

apt-cache policy rsyslog
rsyslog:
  Installed: 8.32.0-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 8.32.0-1ubuntu4

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

The complete output is here:

https://pastebin.com/AxYYQaw5

I went to the links noted. The first one http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2359
from what I can read tells me that whatever action is referenced it was
resumed. I assume in this case it refers to this "resumed (module
'builtin:omfile'" The 2nd link http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2007 seems to
give me a fix for this. I've looked for what is mentioned in the 2nd
link in my /etc/rsyslog.conf file and in my /etc/rsyslog.d/50-
default.conf:

The 2nd link refers to this:

"A frequent case for this error message on Debian-based distributions
(like raspbian) is that rsyslog.conf contains the instruction to write
to the xconsole pipe, but this pipe is never read. If so, you can
simply delete these lines to remove the error message. These lines are
usually found at the end of rsyslog.conf."

My current /etc/rsyslog.conf file is here https://pastebin.com/WZVhryNW

If I need to add some lines to the .conf file I'm not sure what they
should be.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2018-08-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Phillip,

Mutter is not just a binary, but is also the library which provides ALL
the graphics for the login screen and gnome-shell. So yes Ubuntu does
use mutter for everything :)

If your Wayland login option has gone missing then that means the
Wayland backend ("eglnative") of mutter had crashed during startup and
so has been disabled. Please log a NEW bug for that by running:

  ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

on the machine.

[Bug 1788220] [NEW] Ubuntu LTS includes calc as snap

2018-08-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 18.04 includes the calculator as a snap.

The standard installation of snap, with no custom snap apps installed
other than what Ubuntu installs by default, takes a whooping 1.6GB of
hard disk. Calc takes forever to start in a modern machine compared to
the normal calc installed with APT, creates snap files in the user's
home dir (with name $HOME/snap). This is ridiculous.

Snap is immature, there's no sysadmin tool support, and it's not ready
to make it the default for standard Ubuntu LTS.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1727356 ***

Daniel,

Thanks for the soon reply.

I use now lightdm with display manager gdm3 and WaylandEnable=false.

I can startup but the logon-screen is not stable if dual monitor is
used. Screens are repeatingly repainted with and without the second
monitor and the display of the external monitor contains some extra info
from the laptop-screen.

But I can logon!!!

Also I got 2 crashes on gnome-shell, but cannot reproduce.

I will add comment to 1727356 as soon as I know more.

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2018-08-21 Thread Phillip Susi
Ubuntu doesn't use mutter by default though ( is that what lubuntu uses?
). I looked at this again today and for some reason gdm isn't giving
the option to log in with a wayland session. I switched to lightdm and
it appears to not bother with Xwayland and just runs gnome-shell, and
gnome-shell in turn spawns Xwayland, so *it* needs patched to add
XAUTHORITY too.

black boxes (example attached).

I still can print and display these files with okular correctly, so I
guess it is a problem of evince. (I first opened a bug for ghostscript
but then realized that my printer's queue and okular process it
correctly.)" BTW acroread is not showing the graphics either but it
works fine with xpdf. Thanks!.

The problem is cupspdf has turned the images into Type 3 fonts. The
cairo output from poppler does not support Type 3 fonts with color
images and it would not be easy to fix.

I'm not sure if the PDF standard allows Type 3 fonts with color images.
The fact that acroread also fails to render the images in this file
suggests this is either not permitted or a corner case that no one uses.

I suggest using the builtin PDF writing capability of firefox (print to
file in the print dialog). It produces a smaller better quality PDF and
unlike the cupspdf output the text can be copied and pasted from the
PDF.

[Bug 1788256] [NEW] Update fonts-noto-color-emoji to 20180810 release for Unicode 11

2018-08-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
==
Google has released the latest version of their color emoji font that is
shipped with Android 9 "Pie".
The new release is a major upgrade, including support for the new Unicode 11
standard. Some existing emoji were tweaked.

We need this update in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS so that the new emoji work.

https://blog.emojipedia.org/whats-new-in-unicode-11-0/
https://blog.emojipedia.org/inclusive-emojis-coming-back-to-android/

Test Case
=
1. After installing the update, visit
https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html
The browser column should match the Google column

2. You can also use the Characters app shipped by default to verify that
the emoji seem to work ok.

Regression Potential

Except for being rebuilt from source in Ubuntu, this is basically the same
emoji font Google ships in the latest Android.

Other Info
==
Google does a major update of this font once per year corresponding with the
annual release of the new Unicode standard and Android.

** Affects: fonts-noto-color-emoji (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Low
 Status: Fix Committed

** Affects: fonts-noto-color-emoji (Ubuntu Bionic)

[Bug 1788112] Re: font-manager does not appear in gnome-software

2018-08-21 Thread Matthias Klumpp
@jbicha: Those changes will *never* affect a released Debian or Ubuntu version,
only in-development stuff.
The earliest point I actually would consider making such a change is after the
Debian Buster release and at least one release before the next Ubuntu LTS.
Also, the amount of packages with issues should be really low at that point,
ideally be zero.

And all the things that I might adjust yield at least an AppStream warning-type
hint for 2-3 years already, and the old-location one is a Lintian warning too.
So people know about it and there's still plenty of time to adapt :-)

[Bug 1788231] [NEW] Silently discards tar contents after a file with xattrs is encountered

2018-08-21 Thread Dan Watkins
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

  1) Create a tar file containing /usr/bin/mtr-packet (which has xattrs) (and a
file before and after to confirm the behaviour):
 $ tar -C / --xattrs --xattrs-include=\* etc/adduser.conf
usr/bin/mtr-packet etc/aliases -cf reproducer.tar
  2) Confirm that tar reads the file correctly:
 $ tar tf reproducer.tar
 etc/adduser.conf
 usr/bin/mtr-packet
 etc/aliases
  3) Open the file with file-roller (`file-roller reproducer.tar`)

Expected behaviour:

All three files are displayed in the UI

Actual behaviour:

Only etc/adduser.conf appears in the UI

I do actually plan to not have ancient metadata processed anymore at
some point in the future (ancient data is really rare in the archive
nowadays, even).

[Bug 1788112] Re: ubuntu software not synced with synaptic

2018-08-21 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Ubuntu Software uses appstream data to list available applications, as
opposed to synaptic which is a plain package management GUI (it doesn't
make a distinction between applications and other types of packages).

In Ubuntu 18.04, Font Manager is listed in Ubuntu Software, because the
upstream project added appstream data in a recent release
(https://github.com/FontManager/master/commit/36e20510955a2ddc34bebbfc7f1db3f0fd6c695e).
The version in 16.04 doesn't have that appstream data, which explains why it
doesn't appear in Ubuntu Software.

[Bug 1782152] Re: GDM blocks SIGUSR1 used in PAM scripts

2018-08-21 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Dariusz, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gdm3 into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/3.18.3-0ubuntu2.2
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-xenial. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()

2018-08-21 Thread Nicolas Göddel
I just wanted to help but when the bug reporting system does not work
correctly I have no idea what to do. I often get SIGABRTs and similar
crashes with gnome-shell but the most time these bugs were already
reported and I only click on "This bug affects you". In the past I also
created some bug reports but these seem to be fine.

Maybe the bug will be gone when I have updated to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I
just had no time for this until now.

[Bug 1754872] Re: apt install xubuntu-desktop does not resolve dependencies properly

2018-08-21 Thread Julian Andres Klode
There is no correct behavior here.

xubuntu-desktop depends on lightdm, lightdm-gtk-greeter; so apt will
install lightdm which Recommends unity-greeter | lightdm-greeter |
lightdm-kde-greeter. Hence apt installs unity-greeter. Then it installs
lightdm-gtk-greeter.

Telling apt to install xubuntu-desktop and lightdm-gtk-greeter means you
made the choice to use that, and thus don't need unity-greeter.

Just not installing unity-greeter is (a) not possible in a greedy
algorithm and (b) leads to wrong results in other cases (like installing
an sqlite backend for something instead of an mysql one because it has
fewer packages). The EDSP solvers and the kalel solver can do that.

That said, for the future solver generation, my goal is to behave
similar to now, but more strict. If something depends on A|B, the
solver will inject a Recommends: A, unless B is already installed or
manually marked for install. This will cause even more packages to be
installed than now in some situations, but it's the best compromise we
can offer.

[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()

2018-08-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you did use 'ubuntu-bug' to generate this then it has failed somehow.
Sorry, that's a bug in 'ubuntu-bug' or such. So maybe try reproducing
the problem and run it again on a new crash file to see if you get a bug
with more details in it.

"No errors have been reported from this system" is a web site bug :)
Just keep the page open for a few seconds longer and it should change to
something more useful.

If you can't reproduce the error then no problem... The bug will
automatically close after 60 days of no comments.

[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()

2018-08-21 Thread Nicolas Göddel
Hi Daniel. I used the command `ubuntu-bug gnome-shell` to send this bug to
launchpad. If I try this with the crash file instead it only opens a window
with some crash details but there is no possibility to upload anything.
Going to errors.ubuntu.com only tells me that I am not logged in. After logging
in it says: "No errors have been reported from this system"
Can I upload the 45 MB crash file somewhere else? I don't know if it contains
sensible information.

Reproducing the issue seems not to be possible because this was an error
I never saw before and it just happened without doing anything
spectacular.

[Bug 1785600] Re: Natural scrolling is only applied in one direction (vertical)

2018-08-21 Thread Vincent
I couldn't think of too many applications in which I could trigger
horizontal scrolling, but at least I've tried some different toolkits:

- Gimp
- Inkscape
- Firefox
- VSCode
- LibreOffice Writer
