[Bug 1766137] Re: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only)

2018-09-08 Thread matt scott
9-8-018 fresh install with updates .. some user switches work, some
don't logout is also crashing with irresponsive black screen. When the
user switch fails, the description is slightly different from above. If
the mouse pointer comes in at lower right, the user switch works. If it
comes in upper right, then the mouse fails, alt-F1 etc. all do nothing,
and rather than blank purple screen, I have what appears to be a
successful login, but the system is completely non-responsive.

[Bug 1760399] Re: New On-screen keyboard cannot be manually triggered to appear

2018-09-08 Thread Mario Vukelic
The Ubuntu help for 18.04 says that you need to activate it in the
Accessibility settings, and "When you next have the opportunity to type, the
on-screen keyboard will open at the bottom of the screen."
https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/keyboard-osk.html

Neither is true for me:
1. I don't need to enable it in Accessibility in order to trigger in Activities
and Applications
2. If I do enable it, it doesn't trigger outside of these two menus anyway

I notice that the release notes for Gnome 2.28 say "The new keyboard
automatically activates when a text area is selected". If this worked,
no activation button would be needed as far as I can tell, and I suppose
this is why there is none. However as I said in my previous comment this
is not the case for me

[Bug 1760399] Re: New On-screen keyboard cannot be manually triggered to appear

2018-09-08 Thread Mario Vukelic
There is an extension to show a panel button to trigger it:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1061/on-screen-keyboard-button/

Unfortunately, its panel button itself does not react to touch at least
for me (on Cosmic, Gnome 3.30, Wayland), which kind of defeats the
purpose

That said, in Gnome 3.30 the new OSK (from 2.28) automatically appears
for me when I touch certain text entry fields, even when it is not
enabled in Accessibility settings. This is IMHO the best solution.
However, detection is either buggy or needs application support, as it
works for me only in gnome-shell directly, e.g. the search field in
Activities, but not anywhere else, not even first-class Gnome apps like
Web or Videos

18.04 LTS that we're not going to use distro patches to add these menus
back.

[Bug 1720089] Re: Desktop isn't part of "places" (left bar) in artful

2018-09-08 Thread Mario Vukelic
Still the same in Cosmic. In the upstream bug it does not seem that they
want to add it back by default (as expected really), so I'd think it's
up to Ubuntu if files on desktop remain in contrast to upstream.

"António Fernandes @antoniof · 8 months ago
Developer

The Desktop folder should become bookmarkable: #187 (closed)
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop
background" feature."

The #187 is closed because bookmarking is already possible.
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/187

However, bookmarking is a poor replacement:
- It gets listed in the bookmarks section, far away from Home and Documents
where it really belongs as a central feature of file management in Ubuntu.
- As bookmark, he icon (in Cosmic) has black & white outline style which is
inconsistent with the prominent colorful Desktop icon that is shown inside the
Home folder

[Bug 1791421] [NEW] Nautilus hangs when opening a password protected .7z file

2018-09-08 Thread Jeroen
Public bug reported:

Very simple scenario: On a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 installation (with Unity
and pzip-full installed) I try to open a password protected .7z file
(created in an older Ubuntu version). Nautilus starts flickering, CPU
usage rises to 80% for minutes and Nautilus is not usable for a long

[Bug 1753525] Re: Wacom tablet not recognized in Settings > Devices

2018-09-08 Thread mika
since upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 I have this issue.

gnome desktop on xorg

intuos CTH-480M-S

on startup tablet is in absolute mode, i have to open settings wacom
tablet -> stylus not recognised;

if just clicking on tablet tab button, the tablet switches back to the
set setting (relative).

I had restarted with an older kernel & it was the same so I'd thought it
is a ubuntu issue related top 18.04. I 'll double check that though.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2018-09-08 Thread dvo
Thanks @Daniel von Vugt for your comment.

Meanwhile I experienced the issue again with the "Workspace Indicator"
extension not being installed, so this cannot be the culprit in my case. Yet
while trying to switch workspaces I briefly saw again that silly Psensor popup
window "Authentication is required to update SMART data from /dev/sda".
Quitting Psensor removed the blockage right away, to this is the extension to
blame.
Where/how best to report this apparent Psensor bug?

I had already unticked Psensor's Preferences -> Providers -> 'Enable
support of udisks2' (as suggested as a workaround elsewhere), but this
did not help. Now I've also unticked Preferences -> Providers -> 'Enable
support of hddtemp daemon'. Since meanwhile all HDD related sensors are
disabled in the Psensor preferences I am rather confident that the very
annoying blockage is gone. (If not, I'll uninstall Psensor, since Gnome
3 is unable to properly deal with its strange behavior.)

[Bug 1791413] [NEW] Help application hangs when playing a video in NVIDIA hardware using the open source driver on a live session.

2018-09-08 Thread JORGETECH
Public bug reported:

-Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

-Package version: 3.26.0-1ubuntu2

-What I expected to happen:

The videos about "Getting started with GNOME" should play without
issues.

-What happened instead:

Instead of playing the videos the help application hangs until the
WebKit process (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/webkit2gtk-4.0/WebKitWebProcess) crashes.

I was able to reproduce this bug with NVIDIA hardware using the open
source driver inside a live session, using AMD hardware causes no issue
at all.

[Bug 1780672] [NEW] login screen "greyed out", no mouse or keyboard inputs

2018-09-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Unable to log into 18.04. Worked for about a month, then suddenly
stopped. Boot appeared normal until login screen. Login screen appeared
to be "greyed out", mouse and keyboard did not work. System clock
appeared ok.

CTL-ALT-F2 did not open new terminal. CTL-ALT-F7 did not reset login
screen or desktop.

Changed boot process to verbose. No errors observed on startup.

I've recovered a lot of Ubuntu machines, this problem is new to me.

[Bug 1791367] Re: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)

2018-09-08 Thread Mario Vukelic
** Description changed:

Please forgive if filed for wrong package. Problem occurs in X and
Wayland sessions but not on console, so does not seem to be kernel.

Repro on Asus UX561UD with Ubuntu 18.10 up to date:
  1. Log into Gnome X or Gnome Wayland session
  2. Press Fn+F2 which is the airplane mode key

-> Airplane mode should turn on but nothing happens

  3. Switch to console with Ctrl+Alt+F3
  4. Log into console
  5. Press Fn+F2 again
  6. Switch back to GUI session with Ctrl+Alt+F2

-> Airplane mode is on, icon appeared in Gnome task bar

  Same for turning it off.

No difference when booting 18.04.1 live image

- This laptop seems not the only one with this problem. I got the idea of
trying the console trick from ArenaL5's answer on Askubuntu, but unfortunately
there is no solution there:
