[Bug 1805561] Re: Wayland not working

2018-11-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Technically Wayland was never working with the Nvidia driver. Even if
you do remember to use nvidia-drm.modeset=1, the problem remains that
Ubuntu's mutter builds are missing EGLStreams support. So when the
"Ubuntu on Wayland" option was given in 18.04/18.10 it would still only
provide software rendering...

Is the problem you see just that the login screen provides no "Ubuntu on
Wayland" option any more?

[Bug 1803271] Re: [regression] Much higher CPU during some gnome-shell operations

2018-11-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

- Since fixing bug 1672297 in release 18.04 we experience much higher
- (almost double) CPU usage during gnome-shell JavaScript operations, such
- as the icon spring animation.
+ Since fixing bug 1672297 in release 18.04 we experience much higher (almost
double) CPU usage during gnome-shell JavaScript operations, such as the icon
spring animation [1]. Even just moving the mouse is a little more expensive now
[2].
+ [1] https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/349
+ [2] https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/283

  [Test Case]

Use 'top' to measure the CPU usage of the gnome-shell process while
tapping Super+A repeatedly. It should be much lower with the fix than
  without.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. This particular fix is tiny
  (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gjs/merge_requests/236) and has been
released and used in a couple of upstream gjs versions already without
  issue.

  [Other Info]

The fix is already released to 19.04 as part of gjs version 1.54.2-1.

[Bug 1763892] Re: 144Hz/120Hz monitor but mutter seems to cap rendering at 60FPS

2018-11-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes I certainly aim to get the fix into 18.04 eventually. This counts as
a hardware enablement bug so it shouldn't be a problem. The only delay
is that we need to ensure the fix(es) are in 19.04 and 18.10 first.

If you're only using Xorg then you only need one of the fixes, which is
to drop clutter-Smooth-out-master-clock-to-smooth-visuals.patch from the
mutter source. If you know how to do that then great, otherwise you will
need to wait for the official update, sorry.

P.S. Can someone please accept the above nomination for bionic?

[Bug 1805503] [NEW] Files and folders search doesn't work properly with Nautilus 3.30 from the GNOME 3 Staging PPA

2018-11-27 Thread Marco
Public bug reported:

On my Ubuntu 18.10 I upgraded Nautilus from the GNOME 3 Staging PPA. But
with Nautilus 3.30, when I try to search my files and my folders from
the activity view, I almost never get results. With Nautilus 3.26 the
files and folders search works flawlessly, but with Nautilus 3.30 does
not work properly neither with Tracker 2.0.3 nor with Tracker 2.1.3 from
the GNOME 3 Staging PPA.

[Bug 1805468] [NEW] Snap mounts bloat system footprint by inactive apps

2018-11-27 Thread dronus
Public bug reported:

Affects: Ubuntu 18.04

Snap filesystems mounted by snapd use kernel (and maybe userspace?)
ressources just for providing apps. Even if the app is not running, the
mount is still there, conuming system ressources.

We must remember that we are only at the beginning. If more and more
apps migrate to snap format, the filesystem mount table and thus
permanently used system ressources would grow even for any non-used app.

In the past, most unused features (beside system services like printer
environment etc.) on a linux system consumed disk space only, and affect
system performance only for some works, eg. doing a backup of the system
disk.

With snapd behaveing this way, we have to expect every utility (like a
clock, unused fonts, emoticon updates, ...) will permamently affect
system performance and user experience at any occasion mount points are
to be browsed.

Personal opinion: This strongly reminds me to the way Windows behaves,
and is hated for since ages. I cannot understand how someone could
consider this technique feasable for a productive OS.

[Bug 1805444] [NEW] Fail to launch gnome-wayland-shell on Ubuntu-18.04 with EGLDevice backend

2018-11-27 Thread Yogish Kulkarni
Public bug reported:

Fail to launch gnome-wayland-shell on Ubuntu-18.04 with EGLDevice
backend due to following missing changes in mutter
3.28.3-2~ubuntu18.04.2

commit 1bf2eb95b502ed0419b0fe8979c022cacaf79e84
Author: Miguel A. Vico
Date: Thu Jun 7 16:29:44 2018 -0700

renderer/native: Choose first EGL config for non-GBM backends

Commit 712ec30cd9be1f180c3789e7e6a042c5f7b5781d added the logic to only
choose EGL configs that match the GBM_FORMAT_XRGB pixel format.
However, there won't be any EGL config satisfying such criteria for
non-GBM backends, such as EGLDevice.

This change will let us choose the first EGL config for the EGLDevice
backend, while still forcing GBM_FORMAT_XRGB configs for the GBM
one.

commit 8ee14a7cb7e8f072d2731d59c7dc735f83a9bb0b

renderer/native: Also wrap flip closures for EGLStreams

When using the EGLStream backend, the MetaRendererNative passed a
GClosure to KMS when using EGLStreams, but KMS flip callback event
handler in meta-gpu-kms.c expected a closure wrapped in a closure
container, meaning it'd instead crash when using EGLStreams. Make the
flip handler get what it expects also when using EGLStreams by wrapping
the flip closure in the container before handing it over to EGL.

[Bug 1805441] [NEW] SRU 3.30.2 to Cosmic

2018-11-27 Thread Andrea Azzarone
Public bug reported:

[Description]
Update cosmic from 3.30.1 to 3.30.2. We cannot just backport 3.30.2 from Disco
because we need to drop
Debian-s-adduser-doesn-t-allow-uppercase-letters-by-defau.patch as we already
got a diffrent patch in cosmic.

We should also include debian/patches/region-Autodisconnect-IBusBus-
connected-handler.patch. This patch has been cherry picked from the
gnome-3-30 upstream patch and contains a fix for a segmentation fault
(LP: #1804424).

NEWS. The upstream changes are covered by
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME:

 ===
 Version 3.30.2
 ===

 - Translation updates

 Display:
 - Hide unsupported resolutions again
 - Improve snapping
 - Stop night light dialog being destroyed twice

 Online Accounts:
 - Track the lifecycle of CcGoaPanel across async calls

 Region:
 - Fix double-free when closing the input chooser dialog

 Wi-Fi:
 - Disable periodic scan only when Wi-Fi is disabled

[Test Case]
Open gnome-control-center and make sure that the panels in the above list are
working properly. Testing all possible scenarios would be problematic but I
suggest focusing on:
1. Open the wifi panel and make sure that you can enable/disable the wifi
properly
2. On a multi-head setup open the display panel and make sure that you can
re-arrange the layout of your displays.

Please follow also the test case for LP: #1804424 that should cover the
fixes included in debian/patches/region-Autodisconnect-IBusBus-
connected-handler.patch

[Regression Potential]
The changes to the Online Accounts panel, Regions panels and Night Light dialog
are pretty safe and there should be no possible regression. Possible
regressions:
- wifi panel: you could not be able to enable/disable the wifi
- display panel: you could not be able to re-arrange the monitor layouts on a
multi-monitor setup.

[Bug 1805438] [NEW] Print settings present two distinct interfaces for adding printers

2018-11-27 Thread Casey
Public bug reported:

1. Running stock 18.04.1
2. gnome-control-center 3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2

As shown in the first screenshot below, the print settings panel shows
an "Add..." in the headerbar as well as "Add a printer..." and
"Additional printer settings" in the main area.

The first two buttons are highlighted and would naturally seem to be the
first options to try, but they didn't actually work. While I was able to
browse the list of printers attached to the print server, attempting to
actually add the printer ended in an uninformative error message as
shown in the second screenshot.

On the other hand, "Additional printer settings" launches the old
system-config-printer utility which did succeed in adding my desired
printer.

It is not at all obvious without trial and error which option one should
choose to add a new printer.

[Bug 1079324] Re: Dark background when searching for strings at the beginning of a line

2018-11-27 Thread Paul White
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago
and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal) reached end-of-life on May 16, 2014.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported in a
currently supported version of Ubuntu?

Please let us know if you do otherwise this bug report can be left to
expire in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

Hi there. Sorry but I'm a bit confused as to which branches will be

[Bug 1805247] Re: Onscreen Keyboard in Wayland cannot be summoned by swiping up on the screen

2018-11-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report. Could you test if that's still an issue
in cosmic and if it is report it upstream as well on
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

Wayland is not our default session/recommended, do you plan to base
work/customer projects on it?
