[Bug 1763892] Re: 144Hz/120Hz monitor but mutter seems to cap rendering at 60FPS

2019-03-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rachel,

Please use the test case at the top of the bug.

There are also other bugs which may make mutter appear to not render at
full speed. Most notably:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/406

but also most of:

  https://trello.com/c/Q6JYXPPs

You need to be careful to not confuse this bug for those others.

[Bug 1818938] [NEW] Found storing user fingerprints as raw image files

2019-03-06 Thread Seong-Joong Kim
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

Currently, libfprint saves a fingerprint image (FP1 or 2?) to a file on
the host without any encryption.

Once fingerprint has been leaked, victims are leaked for the rest of
life since it lasts for a life.

It is necessary to prepare for the problem.

Especially, when I use `fp_print_data_save()` using libfprint library
for enrolling my fingerprints, the image is saved in user’s home
directory without any protection scheme.

Though `fprintd` generates fingerprint image with root permission for
protecting the file from attackers, it is not of itself sufficient.

FYI, similar issues on Android have been reported and cryptographic
operations are introduced to encrypt fingerprint (see [1-2]).

[2]
https://www.zdnet.com/article/hackers-can-remotely-steal-fingerprints-from-android-phones/

Lastly, is it a kind of `CWE-311: Missing Encryption of Sensitive Data`? (see

Many thanks!!

[Bug 1818936] [NEW] Found hard-coded secret-key for challenge-response on libfprint

2019-03-06 Thread Seong-Joong Kim
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

We need to fix hard-coded symmetric-key for challenge-response
authentication on `uru4000 driver`.

The driver uses a symmetric-key technique to encrypt the challenge data
using AES encryption algorithm for authentication.

"2nd generation MS devices added an AES-based challenge/response authentication
scheme, where the device challenges the authenticity of the driver."
link:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/blob/master/libfprint/drivers/uru4000.c#L348

Unfortunately, the driver creates risk by exposing a hard-coded secret
key as follows:

/* For 2nd generation MS devices */
static const unsigned char crkey[] = {
0x79, 0xac, 0x91, 0x79, 0x5c, 0xa1, 0x47, 0x8e,
0x98, 0xe0, 0x0f, 0x3c, 0x59, 0x8f, 0x5f, 0x4b,
};
link:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/blob/master/libfprint/drivers/uru4000.c#L150

If the library wants to use challenge-response authentication, we need
to introduce a new key distribution scheme also.

Furthermore, I don't know why the library is really necessary to use it
such a resource constrained environment.

Lastly, is it a kind of CWE-321: Use of Hard-coded Cryptographic Key? (see
https://cwe.mitre.org/data/definitions/321.html)

Many thanks!!

[Bug 1812527] Re: [bionic][regression] gnome-shell crashes with SIGSEGV in meta_window_actor_is_destroyed(self=NULL) called from _switchWorkspaceDone() [windowManager.js:1787]

2019-03-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Daniel, I understand that you want to reproduce it. However, if you
aren't experiencing this bug, then that tells me you don't have a
hardware configuration that is affected by it. If you're affected,
reproducing it is very easy - simply use the keyboard shortcut
designated for switching up or down to another workspace. Every time I
do this, I have a one in five chance of GNOME crashing. It's so common
that I have no chance of NOT reproducing it.

As for apps, if it matters, I only have Firefox, Thunderbird, and gnome-
terminal open at any one time.

[Bug 1818920] [NEW] Uses old snap default icon

2019-03-06 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
GNOME Software uses an outdated icon for snaps without icons.

[Test Case]
1. Open GNOME Software
2. Look for a snap that has a default icon (e.g. youtube-dl)

Expected behaviour:
- The new icon is shown (grey circle with lines)

Observed behaviour:
- The old icon is shown (grey origami bird snapcraft logo)

[Regression Potential]
Low, this is just an asset change.

[Bug 1818905] [NEW] Store screenshots to the org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory directory, if defined

2019-03-06 Thread Michael Aaron Murphy
Public bug reported:

When the `PrintScrn` key is pressed in GNOME Shell, it takes a
screenshot and writes it to `$HOME/Pictures`, or otherwise falling back
to `$HOME` if that directory is not found. The `gnome-screenshot` tool
does a similar action, but also checks for the existence of the `auto-
save-directory` gsetting in `org.gnome.gnome-screenshot`. This will
allow GNOME Shell to also use that key, and store screenshots in this
location when found.

### Implementation Note

I added a `CowPtr` type to make it possible for the
`get_screenshot_directory()` function to return a `gchar*` which is
either owned or borrowed, and to free a value when it is owned.
`g_get_user_special_dir ()` and `g_get_home_dir ()` return `gchar*`
values which are owned by GLib, and must not be freed, but
`g_settings_get_string` is owned, and must be freed.

Alternatively, I could `g_strdup()` the values to copy them onto the
heap.

### Testing

1. Before applying the patch, take a screenshot with the PrintScrn key.
2. A screenshot should now be stored in `$HOME/Pictures`.
3. Create the new screenshot directory, and set the value for gnome-screenshot:
```sh
mkdir $HOME/Screenshots
gsettings set org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory $HOME/Screenshots
```
4. Take the screenshot again, and notice that it stores in `$HOME/Pictures`
instead of `$HOME/Screenshots`
5. Apply the patch, and restart `gnome-shell`, then take the screenshot again
6. The screenshot should be written in `$HOME/Screenshots` instead of
`$HOME/Pictures`.
7. Delete the gsettings value, and try again, to see that it returns to storing
screenshots in `$HOME/Pictures`
```sh
gsettings reset org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory
```

[Bug 118988] Re: No way to disable trash in nautilus

2019-03-06 Thread Joel Croteau
Why is this won't fix? This is extremely annoying. There needs to be a
fix that doesn't involve me editing config files or writing complicated
script to work around the GUI's obtuseness. This is exactly four clicks
in Windows. This is a pretty basic bit of system functionality to put so
many hurdles around.

[Bug 1818852] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in cc_panel_get_title_widget()

2019-03-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report.

It looks like the crash fixed in that update

gnome-control-center (1:3.31.92-1ubuntu1) disco; urgency=medium

  * New version includes:
- Revert making Settings responsive; it needs more polish to reach the
  quality we want (lp: #1817509, #1817425)
  * debian/patches/online_accounts_segfault.patch:
don't segfault when calling the online account panel with add provider,
thanks Andrea Azzarone

But feel free to reopen if you still get the issue after updating to the
newest version

2019-03-06 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
@Daniel, this bug has absolutely nothing to do with using an Android
Emulator. I literally get this crash every five minutes, and I've never
used emulation or virtualization of any kind on either of my machines. I
think the Android Emulator was just a red herring.

[Bug 1818819] [NEW] Remove type-ahead patch.

2019-03-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the Ubuntu version of Gtk+ 3 type-ahead as been re-patched in. This
causes unexpected behaviours for the file-chooser.

The type-ahead patch should be removed for the following reasons:

1) In file-chooser when you try to search using the looking-glass icon
search-dialogue the focus does not stay in the search box, so you have
to click in the box each time you type a letter.[1]

2) A magically appearing type-ahead box is not expected and confusing.

3) This behaviour was removed from Nautilus, and from main-line Gtk+
years ago. Having this behaviour re-added is not something that should
have happened. There is a search button for a reason. [2]

It's better to make people use the less confusing search box than the
very confusing type-ahead box.

I understand that you might think it is good for the old-timers, but it
is totally broken, and has no place in a modern operating system.

---

[2] It does not make sense when looking at HIG. And how most GNOME and Gtk+
apps are designed. It is a weird legacy design choice from before Gtk+
modernised and made things much clearer.

2019-03-06 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

IMPACT
---
Evince does not follow internal links in some PDF research articles (affects
Evince 3.28.4 + Poppler 0.62.0 on Ubuntu 18.04)
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues/1070

PDF's link annotation does not work in Evince 3.30.2
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues/1027

Evince does not follow internal links in some PDF research articles. The
internal links are used for easy and fast navigation to pages, figures,
references and equations.
qpdfview (poppler-qt5 viewer) can follow the internal links in those files just
fine.

DOI of one of the affected documents:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.apenergy.2016.10.058

Upstream fix:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/commit/44505cb397c46baa7dd4a0456f737f36e6d19ad0

TEST CASE
--
Clicking on the following parts should work after the fix is committed:

- Superscripts next to the authors names
- Citations in page 17 (e.g. [1], [9,11-18], [25-30])
- Figure and Table links in page 17 (Fig 1 and Table 1 at the beginning of
section 2)
- Equations in page 19 (they stay in the same page as the equations are very
close to their links)

REGRESSION POTENTIAL
-
This is quoted from the upstream commit:

"Named destinations may be described by bytestrings, containing embedded
NULs and not being NUL terminated. That means they cannot be exposed
directly as char*.

The alternatives are to escape the string from the internal representation when
exposing it in the API (e.g. in PopplerDest.named_dest), or to add parallel API
exposing it as GString, or GBytes. This patch chooses the first option, since
the presence of these named destionations in the public, not sealed,
PopplerDest struct means that the second option would need more API additions.
The chosen option is simpler, and does not need the API users to adapt unless
they create the named dest strings
themselves, or consume them in ways other than calling poppler APIs.

The escaping scheme chosen simply replaces embedded NUL with "\0" and
escapes a literal backslash with "\\". This is a minimal ABI change in
that some strings that previously worked unchanged as destinations
(those containing backslash) now don't work, but on the other hand,
previously it was impossible to use any destinations containing embedded
NULs.

Add poppler_named_dest_{from,to}_bytestring() to perform that
conversion, and clarify the documentation for when you need them."

[Bug 1756053] Re: Thrown out of session into login screen with "inactivity" warning

2019-03-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1756053] [NEW] Thrown out of session into login screen with "inactivity" warning

2019-03-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I upgraded to the 18.04 beta yesterday, which fixed all my problems with
hibernation on my DELL XPS 9350. Most other things have been fine until
ten minutes ago, when I was without warning thrown out (forcibly logged
out) of my Gnome session.

I was typing away on my keyboard in WebStorm when suddenly the screen
went blank and I was back at the GDM login screen. There was a brief
warning on screen about the system going into hibernation (or
standby/suspend - don't remember). When I logged in again, it was a
fresh new session, so all previously existing windows had been closed,
which meant I lost work.

I am not sure where to go about debugging this and providing more
information. `dmesg` seemed pretty normal.

I experienced something somewhat similar on 17.10, where I upon logging
in would create _an additional session_ (I could still see the old
processes in the process list), but this seems to be something
different.

Which "Android Emulator" are people using to see this bug?

Is there an Ubuntu package which provides it, or are you manually

[Bug 1760129] [NEW] Tiny mouse cursor on hidpi screens after logging in

2019-03-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

=== System comments

Lenovo Yoga 910 with 13.9" UHD screen.
Bionic Beta 1.
Using 200% scaling.

=== Problem description

Mouse cursor size alternates between tiny size and normal size depending
on where I hover the cursor, tiny on top and left bars, normal on
desktop and everywhere else.

Of course I expected size to stay normal wherever I positioned the
cursor.

=== How to fix the problem

1. Wait for some time or event to pass (have no idea how much/which); AND
2. Click the mouse.

=== Other comments

Must meet both conditions 1 and 2 above in order to fix the issue. That
is, cursor size behavior is restored only immediatelly after clicking,
but also only after the click has happened after event 1 (and I have no
idea what that may be) has passed.

I have noticed this before on 17.10 as well when I briefly tested it
last year, but since 1) there are other bug reports dealing with it; and
2) I only use LTS releases anyway, I never got time to test and report
it.

This happens on a fresh install of Bionic beta 1. Also today with all
updated applied.

=== Required stuff (not sure if it is xorg, if not just ask me and I'll
post what you need)

[Bug 1730672] Re: Proxy settings not applied system-wide, are not used by Software Update or apt

2019-03-06 Thread Arthur Picht
I can confirm that bug for a fresh installed 18.04 working behind a
corporal http/https-proxy that requires authentication.

Although configuring Settings/Network, environment config file, apt and
all gsettings under org.gnome.system.proxy including authentication
correctly, Ubuntu-Software-GUI displays the following error message when
trying to update: “… failed to download
https://extensions.gnome.org//static/extensions.json: Proxy
Authentication Required” and “… failed to download
https://cdn.fwupd.org/downloads/firmware.xml.gz.asc: Proxy
Authentication Required”

Yes, I can work around it by using apt on command line.

But: Apparently Ubuntu-Software, the key tool for maintaining system
security, does not work behind an authenticated proxy. Should that not
be reason enough to value the bug higher than low?
