[Bug 1882410] Re: GNOME Shell crashed with signal 5

Good, bug 1884925 is what I need to look at then. But I can't because it
is private. Are you able to set bug 1884925 to public?

Try this:

Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics > Send error reports to Canonical =
Automatic

then reproduce the crash and hopefully errors.ubuntu.com will show it.

Although I would hope that even with 'Manual' set you would find the
crash file in /var/crash ..?

Re: [Bug 1882453] Re: [nvidia] GUI blanks after long period of use

2020-06-25 Thread Chris
Daniel,

The attached photo has memory utilization data on the Nivida GPU on
typical use. I'll try to figure out how to force the problem on demand.
I believe its related to an application I'm using, however the problem
has not returned and I've updated the driver a few times already.

Thanks Daniel,

Chris Morales

I also logged https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-340/+bug/1876551 about nvidia-340 drivers having the same
problem (won't remember the config).

My workaround is a .desktop file that calls xrandr with my desired
parameters I configured with nvidia tool and then dumped out with
xrandr.

[Bug 1884754] Re: Fractional scaling not persisted in VMware Player

2020-06-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for pointing that out. That sounds relevant to bug 1885026 and
this one...

In the case of this bug it explains why the fractional scaling value is
not persisted -- because the virtual monitor resolution has changed.
Mutter considers that a different display configuration and so won't
keep any old settings from it. You can see this as a separate block in
your ~/.config/monitors.xml

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-06-25 Thread mastorak
@3v1n0
I did some further testing with your mutter package and noticed some important
issues. Even though scaling works mostly ok, I noticed a consistent side-effect
on X applications that they scale in reverse to the rest of the UI. So Gnome
Shell, GTK apps and QT apps will scale 125% but at the same time X apps will
scale 0.75% (or lower) and they ll become super tiny. You can test this with
Gimp xterm and XNethack.

[Bug 1885130] Re: Please add a way to show only open-source apps

2020-06-25 Thread William Dietrich
Okay, filed https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/issues/1021

Would be nice if ubuntu-bug sent me there directly. I'm getting tired
of having to file a lot of bug reports twice. Sometimes downstream says
go to upstream, sometimes upstream says go to downstream. The app
displays as Ubuntu Software, but its CLI / package name is gnome-
software.

@3v1n0
You are indeed right. The new mutter package was not installed from the ppa for
some reason.
I think it should be ok now. Version is 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1.nv1
I am happy to report that fractional scaling works now. Compositor behavior
seems a bit weird(as if there is more tearing) when moving windows but that
just might be my idea.

[Bug 1885170] [NEW] Feature request: make nemo the default file manager instead of nautilus

2020-06-25 Thread Gabriel Staples
Public bug reported:

I'd like to propose that you make nemo the default file manager packaged
with Ubuntu in the future instead of Nautilus. My justification is
centered around utility, use of space, and features. Please see the
portion of my answer near the bottom titled "Why use nemo over Ubuntu's
default nautilus file manager?" here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1066752/how-to-set-nemo-as-the-default-
file-manager-in-ubuntu-18-04/1173861#1173861.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-06-25 Thread Treviño
@mastorak: are you sure you're using those packages?

I don't see any reference in the logs.

@blitmaps, most of the developers use intel or free drivers all the
time, so testing in other scenarios is not always possible.

Also this bug has at least three different behaviors depending on GPU
hardware, for example in my Prime hardware it behaves correctly, while
it doesn't in another prime hardware I recently got.

[Bug 1871849] Re: Full screen videos suddenly change scale when using fractional scaling

Well, I was thinking about that, but it also causes slowdown in games
and D-R videos, so while resizing the UI might be not optimal it also
allows better performances in such scenarios.

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-06-25 Thread Tim Passingham
I am still really struggling to understand why this is not a major issue
amongst ubuntu users. If I use the default interface I get driven crazy
several times a day with mainly libreoffice various applications,
copying and pasting and getting the wrong data.

Can it be that there are either very few focal desktop users, or
libreoffice users, or is it something else more specific to some
systems?, or does no one ever copy and paste any more, or do people just
not complain? It's so fundamental for me.

I'm still torn between slow wayland and buggy gnome.

[Bug 1885136] [NEW] Nautilus connection to SSH IPv6 address fails

2020-06-25 Thread Eero Aaltonen
Public bug reported:

After reading answer
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/151402

I have tested that
1) on the command line
"""
sftp USER@'[IPv6_ADDR%INTERFACE]'
"""
connects successfully

, but
2) on the address field of nautilus 1:3.26.4-0~ubuntu18.04.5, both protocols
'ssh' and 'sftp' result in "Connection failed" for the same form of address.

Expectation was for this connection to succeed.

[Bug 1884754] Re: Fractional scaling not persisted in VMware Player

2020-06-25 Thread Niels Keurentjes
I think I just found out the real issue, and that information is not
going to help you because it will contain seemingly random indicators
depending on how I size my windows.

VMware Player, like most virtualization software, runs windowed by
default, and that window is dynamically resizeable. Now someone in all
their wisdom at Ubuntu apparently decided that the available scaling
options depend on the current resolution.

So when I keep the settings screen open, and start resizing the window,
thus dynamically resizing the "monitor", I can see the available scaling
options change in real time. At 3840x2075 (that's 4k minus the VMware
window borders) I see the 100/125/175/175/250 selector, at 3480x1859 I
don't even get any fractional scaling options, at really low resolutions
all scaling options disappear.

When VMware Player boots, it snaps to the default 1024x768 size. So
that's the monitor resolution when the desktop loads, it concludes
scaling is not allowed at that level, and resets to 100%, no matter what
it was before the reboot.

The real issue appears to be: scaling settings should not be modified
based on resolution during boot.
