[Bug 1890851] [NEW] Evolution ignores authentication changes; uses OAuth even after change

2020-08-07 Thread Jeffrey Walton
Public bug reported:

I'm working on Ubuntu 18.04, x86_64, fully patched. I installed
Evolution package 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.2. I'm trying to use Evolution
with my Gmail account. I've set up my [Evolution] application password
in Google security services. I have an app password for Evolution.

When I attempt to use Evolution for Gmail I am being prompted for OAuth
credentials. I cancel the OAuth prompt, I go to properties and then:

* Receiving Email -> check for supported types
* Receiving Email -> change to "password"
* Sending Email -> check for supported types
* Sending Email -> change to "login" (also tried "plain")

I then try to send and receive and I am prompted for the OAuth password.
Derp... Entering the [Evolution] application password results in a
failed login.

It is very frustrating that Evolution does not honor my settings.

Daniel,

Thanks for you help. The gsettings showed that there some bindings
involving "super". I tried those an they all worked. I tried
"Activities" again and it worked.

I did remove some packages after I noticed the problem. I've attached

[Bug 1890802] [NEW] Big performance degradation in X11 + 4K resolution + fractional scaling in second monitor compared to Wayland

2020-08-07 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad L480
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)
Second monitor: Philips 276E8VJSB/00 4K UHD

There is a big performance degradation in an X11 session + 4K resolution
+ 125% fractional scaling in the second monitor compared to a Wayland
session. The mouse cursor moves very slow, dragging Windows is very
slow, scrolling in Firefox is very laggy, so everything becomes
unusable. The performance degradation applies in both displays even
though fractional scaling is only applied in the second 4K monitor.

Whereas in Wayland, the performance is much better in 4K resolution +
fractional scaling in the second monitor, the mouse cursor and dragging
windows are a lot smoother. I just sometimes notice a slight jump in the
mouse cursor but only in the second monitor, the built-in monitor
behaves normally.

[Bug 1890716] [NEW] xdg-mime query filetype index.html reports wrong type

2020-08-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

For .html files `xdg-mime` reports wrong type. The culprit is the `"use
strict"` phrase which is used in JavaScript. It should not mistake .html
files for anything else except of text/html !

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Run the following step by step in any folder:
1. $ echo "\"use strict\"" > index.html
2. $ xdg-mime query filetype index.html # -> application/x-perl - this should
be text/html!

Platform:
Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa)"
Linux version 5.4.0-42-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-038) (gcc version 9.3.0
(Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu2))

Yeah the world is full of subtle connection problems. In this particular
case, dropping back to 8bps would fix it. But I'm not sure how we would
detect that, or if it's even the right thing to do in most cases.

I guess Windows is good at compatibility and defaulting to 8bpc is safe.
But unless we have a GUI that allows users to then select 10bpc,
defaulting to 8bpc is not something we should do.

[Bug 1890772] Re: Some external 4K monitor is not working properly

2020-08-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks that does seem to be an old EDID v1.3 with no defined bit depth.
But there are some vendor-specific blocks there that do advertise
support for 10bpc and 12bpc.

In this case I think it's correct to try and default to 10bpc or 12bpc.
It's probably only the cable or dongle letting it down. I wonder if such
limited cable bandwidth is something we can detect in software?...

Imagine (or please test) what a newer monitor with an EDID v1.4 would
do. If that reported more definite support for 10bpc then it would be
even more correct to try and default to 10bpc. But we would also need
more intelligent logic (somewhere) that detects when the desired
bandwidth isn't being achieved due to cable or dongle problems.
