[Bug 1847712] Re: Desktop icons vanishing when in Activities Overview is jarring and looks ugly

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
For patching into Ubuntu I think we should still use:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/1395.patch

It's only closed upstream because they want a different design. But that
will not be as simple and reliable as the above patch, which should also
be backportable.

[Bug 1890998] Re: Cant login in to system

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

It sounds like there's an invalid Xorg config file on your system with
lots of:

  Option "_source" "server/udev"

and

  Option "_source" "_driver/libinput"

That may be why Xorg is exiting immediately. If you can find the config
file that contains those then please move it elsewhere, and/or attach it
here.

[Bug 1891272] Re: Ubuntu settings is still reporting 3.36.3 after update?

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it would be more sensible for the GUI to just show "3.36".
Because the third component is different for different GNOME packages.
It doesn't make sense to declare the whole system is "3.36.3" or
"3.36.4".

automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

Does it do it again after a restart?

You might find the bug report process not adapted but keep in mind that
it's a community project and not a service you are paying for, the
project is better deserved with less bugs with higher quality

That is good news! I've been using the touchscreen as much as possible
since last night and have been unable to reproduce the crash.

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2020-08-13 Thread Julian Andres Klode
The proposed debdiff is wrong, it reverts a patch in the patch series by
adding a new patch. I think we can probably remove the vt-handoff.patch
from the patch series for groovy without much checking, but any SRU will
need to consult with flavours to check if they need the handoff.

[Bug 1891450] Re: Settings > Sound > Inputs ON/OFF toggle does not show true microphone state

2020-08-13 Thread Hedley Finger
The bug reporting procedure is far too complex. Only highly motivated users
wade through the swamp of apport, etc. to finally get through to the actual
bug-reporting form. Surely the instructions could be replaced with a GUI app
bolted onto apport. When a bug is not a crash but some lesser malfunction in
system software, surely a user should be able to right-click in a window and
choose Report Bug or Improvement from a context menu, and then the app would
gather all the information needed.

Many users who are using Ubuntu as a replacement for Mac OS or Windows
would be completely befuddled by the hoops you have to crawl through to
communicate to Canonical/Launchpad. I certainly won't be reporting bugs
in future unless it is life-threatening. I am a rusted-on Ubuntu fan
with some facility with the CLI, but this is all too much.

[Bug 1891450] [NEW] Settings > Sound > Inputs ON/OFF toggle does not show true microphone state

2020-08-13 Thread Hedley Finger
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS Bionic Beaver
gnome-control-center (gnome-sound-properties?)

I recently used sound input for the first time ever to attend a Zoom
session. I opened Settings > Sound > Inputs and saw that the microphone
was switched ON. In fact, it was disabled, and it was many days before I
realised that the ON/OFF toggle and the microphone state were out of
synch. So I was able to activate the microphone by toggling OFF then ON.

This is a bad usability issue.

[Bug 1782629] Re: mutter is ignoring wl_shell_surface_move and wl_shell_surface_resize

I can't tell from the current code (which is different) if this fix is
still needed. Is it?
