[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Safe mode isn't a fix, it's just a temporary workaround. It will give
you the wrong resolution and no hardware acceleration either.

Please follow the instructions in comment #4 as soon as is convenient.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

had another crash immediately after. seems like the primary trigger is
playing games in steam, especially games using the proton runtime layer
for running windows games. so it seems like something's perhaps changed
since 20.04 and now gnome-shell is intolerant of high performance vulkan

Next time you boot Ubuntu, please try not only 'Ubuntu on Wayland' but

the problem is specific to the native mode of the LCD panel or happens

Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom
half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just
hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for
Wayland.

Cheers

installed that don't come from Ubuntu. this may be coincidence, but it
does feel off that after upgrading to 20.10 both my systems that run

hey Daniel,

if I'm reading the first part of your reply right, it sounds like gnome-
shell extensions can hard crash gnome-shell? which means it's not safe
to ever use any extensions? i feel like i must be misunderstanding that,
since ubuntu distributes a set of extensions by default in the desktop
env, and that wouldn't make sense if the shell extensions are so
dangerous.

on to the next steps, there's no crash files in that dir, but there are
files called `_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload` and `_usr_bin_gnome-
shell.1000.uploaded`. I'm assuming that's what ties into
errors.ubuntu.com.

I see a ton of errors around gnome on that site for my whoopsie-id, lots of
gnome-shell and gnome-settings-daemon crashes:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/3e155148c8cdcde9fe5cd5283283ef9837d7582a978ff3ce587c63aefe0cd3d3bc1bbe4921b8fff669e75ac4de5f3962de964e0df2f56142604e65bb3aa47f5c

it doesn't let me look at those crash reports so I don't really have a
clue what the root cause could be, but hopefully you have access to them
and can investigate further.

Please:

1. Attach a screenshot or photo of the problem.

2. Try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' on the login screen, just before
you enter your password. Does it have the same bug?

[Bug 1906137] Re: gnome-shell on 20.10 crashes all the time

2020-11-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Since so many bugs are caused by extensions, the first thing you should
try is removing these:

'putwin...@clemens.lab21.org', 'sound-output-device-
choo...@kgshank.net', 'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de', 'update-
extensi...@franglais125.gmail.com',
'appindicatorsupp...@rgcjonas.gmail.com', 'topic...@phocean.net',

indica...@franglais125.gmail.com', 'system-
moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com', 'user-theme@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com'

but also...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1906173] [NEW] Screen blank when waking from suspend, have to move mouse to make login screen appear

2020-11-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is basically the same symptom, but from many years ago:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1431128

To reproduce:
1) Suspend (I do so via the dropdown menu)
2) Turn off display. (Not sure if relevant)
3) Turn on display. (Not sure if relevant, problem occurs even if this step is
after #4)
4) Wake from suspend (I do so by pressing a key on the keyboard OR the power
button)
5) Screen either stays black or flickers for a second and then goes black
6) Press any key on the keyboard
7) Login screen appears (as if it was in screen-saver/lock mode before)

I'm guessing the bug is not very reproducible because you would have
noticed it already. However, I should note that (aside from a few days
after I installed the OS) the problem happens 100% of the times I wake
from sleep

Some unique details about my setup:
1) The default 20.04 installation failed to a bug installing the packaged
Nvidia drivers, but skipping that and doing it after installation worked in all
respects that I can see
2) My computer is custom, not OEM.
3) I do have VMWare Workstation installed
4) I used to use 18.04 and 19.10, neither had the issue

If the problem is Debian issue 975453 and upstream Mutter issue 1486

This bug is currently not assigned to any components of "Ubuntu 20.10 /

and Wayland sessions? Or just when app menus are open?

As I mentioned at , the issue is

in the PPA, the issue will soon be fixed in both 20.04 and 20.10.

[Bug 1906186] [NEW] Natural Scrolling doesn't persist after close and open the laptop lid

2020-11-29 Thread Eduardo Rojas Rodríguez
Public bug reported:

Hi!

I'm using a Lenovo thinkpad t460 with Ubuntu 20.10, I like to use the
mouse natural scrolling with the trackpoint, but recently I noticed that
when I close and open the lip of the laptop, sometimes the natural
scrolling in the trackpoint revert to the default (disable) but the UI
in the control center setting for the mouse does not change, so what I
have to do is, turn off and on the setting and then the natural
scrolling start working again

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2020-11-29 Thread Michele Gastaldo
Hi Daniel,

I did some testing because I seemed to be affected by this issue on
Ubuntu 20.04. In fact I first used the script from bernaerts mentioned
above (#4 for instance). Anyway I disabled its startup before these
tests, I mentioned it to clear the ground.

So I followed your instructions in #147: everything seems to work, the
two monitors.xml are identical and the configuration is correctly
applied on my system.

Then I tested some different real use behaviours, as I am working with a
laptop attached to a TV and I not always have them connected, but most
importantly I only use the TV to watch videos, while in normal use I
prefer to work on my screen only.

So I started with a new monitors.xml, setup the dual monitors (Join Displays)
view, and then tried:
1. unconnecting the TV "on hot", then connecting it again
2. the same, but logging out and in between the two steps
3. turning off the computer as it is, unconnecting the TV, restarting, and
connect the TV at some point
4. switching the configuration to Single-Display, then activating dual view
again

In cases 1-3 the configuration is back as expected, so everything ok. In case 4
the configuration is lost.
This is because in 1-3 monitors.xml is unaffected (a monitors.xml~ is instead
created and apparently used; not sure how that is handled), whereas in 4 it is
overwritten and the TV is not only marked , but its whole
configuration (X,Y, scale, etc.) deleted.

This might seem trivial, but I originally expected the single-display
configuration not to interfere with the dual one in case 4 just as in
the other ones. 4 is quite a usual behaviour of mine, and maybe not
only: 1 and 2 are not recommendable (in fact, in one case the X session
crashed); 3 is surely correct, but 4 might also be quite likely - a
monitor/TV is physically connected, but used only at times (e.g., for
watching movies or for particular tasks), so one would switch it off and
want windows not to open there. Expecting the system to understand that
"Off" does not mean "forget its configuration"...

I think more people here fall in this kind of behaviour (surely #143 and
likely #114), which is not really an issue of the configuration not
being loaded, but rather a 'bad managing' of different situations

[Bug 1904237] Re: [regression] On-screen keyboard (OSK) on touch screen does not seem to work at all under Xorg in Focal

2020-11-29 Thread albertvaka
Ping on this. Can somebody take a look at why this stopped working?

If you folks consider this is not important, I think the documentation
should be updated to say touchscreen devices are not officially
supported.

This bug is still present in Ubuntu 20.10 / Gnome 3.38. This is a huge
issue especially in corporate environments.
