[Bug 1925750] Re: Ubuntu 21.04 not loading correctly intel graphics driver

2021-04-26 Thread Seth Forshee
I honestly don't know much about how these dual-GPU systems work. I
suspect there must be some firmware interfaces for enabling/disabling
the discrete GPU, I have no idea whether those are standardized or
platform-specific. Assuming the kernel supports the interfaces for your
platform, I also don't know what userspace packages are necessary to
utilize those interfaces. You might want to try searching for
instructions for your specific machine.

You might also check the firmware setup, there may be options there
related to enabling/disabling the discrete graphics.

2021-04-26 Thread florin
@Seth Forshee
Thank you for having a look, I have no idea how these work.

But shouldn't there be a way to select the Intel driver and be able to
use Wayland? If it is not there, how else do I do it?

[Bug 1926006] Re: Suspend, restart and power off don't work, crashes the system and logs me out.

2021-04-26 Thread Adam Bishop
Thank you for responding. I tried to restart, but all I got was a
flashing cursor in the top left of my screen. So, in the end, I had to
reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. The same problem re-occurred again, and
forced me to re-install from scratch a third time. This last time, from
the very first boot after removing the installation media, I went to the
Nvidia app and switched from "On-demand" to "Intel only". This time it
rebooted in Wayland, while giving me also the option to boot into X.org
or Classic Gnome, and everything worked perfectly, both in Wayland and
in X.org. Finally, just to try once more to use my Nvidia card, prepared
as I was to re-install fresh one last time, I set Nvidia to "On-demand"
and booted into X.org (Wayland wasn't offered) without any problem
persisting at all. Therefore, I think the problem is something to do
with the Nvidia card not saving the relevant setting in on first boot
into "On-demand" mode, and you need to set it to another mode and then
switch for the settings to be saved correctly. Otherwise, I can't
explain it. I did nothing strange with any other settings, installs or
configurations. I believe, therefore, that it is the Nvidia card, with
the Nvidia proprietary driver, that is preventing the computer from
suspending, sleep, hibernating, starting, powering off (by command or
GUI - only button physical button works), or whatever. It seems that the
Nvidia card stays active, preventing the system from deactivating. Apart
from that it could possibly have something to do with the HDPI screen,
that requires fractional scaling to be usable, although I hadn't yet set
fractional scaling when I had the problems. Of course I can add the log
if you think it would help, but right now I have a perfectly functioning
system (apart from the apt get installed Firefox which glitches in the
menu and consumes excessive RAM - most likely unrelated - and is
resolved by uninstalling the apt install and installing the Firefox
Snap). Thanks!

[Bug 1925750] Re: Ubuntu 21.04 not loading correctly intel graphics driver

2021-04-26 Thread Seth Forshee
The reason you don't see any Intel graphics drivers in the "Addditional
Drivers" tab is that none are needed. The Intel graphics driver (i915)
is open source and already included in the kernel, and from your logs it
has been loaded.

There's nothing I'm seeing currently which indicates a kernel issue. My
best guess as to which package decides whether or not to offer wayland
sessions is gdm3, so I'll add that to the bug report.

[Bug 1926127] Re: Gnome-web crashes immediately when typing in address bar

2021-04-26 Thread Julien Olivier
OK, after tinkering a bit, I think I have found a way to reproduce it
easily: it seems that the browser crashes whenever you type something
that matches one of the URIs stored in the browser's history. So the
crash is probably related to the address bar's auto-completion /
suggestions.

[Bug 1925792] Re: XKB layout variants not shown in the menu of respective language but under Others

2021-04-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ The GUI in gnome-control-center for adding input sources is broken. The
+ XKB layout variants should be visible in the menu of respective
+ language, but instead they are all shown under "Others".
+
+ The issue has a potential to cause confusion for a lot of users.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ 1. Open Settings -> Region & Language and press the + button
+to open the window for adding input sources.
+
+ 2. Click "English (United States)".
+
+ -> Find far fewer options than expected
+
+ 3. Install the gnome-desktop3 binaries from hirsute-proposed and
+relogin (or possibly reboot).
+
+ 4. Repeat 1. and 2.
+
+ -> Find the expected input source options
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ The fix is a cherry picked oneliner which was committed upstream on
+ February 16 in order to address this issue. Very hard to see how it
+ would affect anything else adversely.
+
+ [Original description]
+
  Ubuntu 21-04 installed from scratch (on dual-boot) a few days before
  stable release.

  To be able to switch to a language that requires a keyboard different
  than my own, I used the GUI's "language and region" settings > "manage
  installed languages" > install/remove languages. I found "Russian" and
  it was added. Next i pressed the + sign. Selecting "Russian (Russian
  Federation)" yielded 2 keyboards: "Russian", "Russian (Polyglot and
  Reactionary)".

  Neither keyboard was "phonetic". The phonetic keyboard has been with the
  standard Ubuntu installs for at least ten years.

  According to Gunnar Hjalmarsson "Ubuntu 21.04 is shipped with the same
  version of the xkb-data package as in 20.04 and 20.10, so nothing has
  changed. And multiple variants are available, including the one named
  Russian (phonetic)." So this should be fairly easy to fix, no?

  I find that the language settings are a little too complicated for me to
  tamper with on the terminal, but I am including the information I was
  able to collect:

  ~$ locale -a
  C
  C.UTF-8
  en_AG
  en_AG.utf8
  ...
  nb_NO.utf8
  POSIX
  ru_RU.utf8
  ru_UA.utf8

  $ setxkbmap -print -verbose
  Trying to build keymap using the following components:
  keycodes:   evdev+aliases(qwerty)
  types:  complete
  compat: complete
  symbols:pc+us+inet(evdev)
  geometry:   pc(pc105)
  xkb_keymap {
-   xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
-   xkb_types { include "complete"  };
-   xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
-   xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)" };

+  xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)"  };
+  xkb_types { include "complete"   };
+  xkb_compat{ include "complete"   };
+  xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)"  };

  };

[Bug 1925792] Re: XKB layout variants not shown in the menu of respective language but under Others

2021-04-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Here is a quick-and-dirty solution:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/gnome-desktop3

Those patches are in Debian too, and the issue is present also on Debian
testing. Probably a reason for a last minute change there.

[Bug 1925792] Re: XKB layout variants not shown in the menu of respective language but under Others

2021-04-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher
It's weird that downgrading gnome-desktop binaries fixes the issue since
there is no actual changes to the source between the versions, it was
mostly just version bumps for the GNOME about dialog...

[Bug 1926088] Re: Appearance: Window colors selection does not work

Thank you for your bug report, could you do
$ journalctl -f
try to switch there and add the log from the previous command to the bug?

[Bug 1925982] Re: GNOME Settings automatically closes on open.

2021-04-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
