[Bug 1929011] [NEW] Alt + SysRq/ PrintScrn + REISUB R-E-I-S-U-B for emergency reboot
Public bug reported: Left-Alt is always operational & Right-Alt is not at any time & not specific to this report's subject category. True on both desktop & Live ubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.iso. It is natural to use Right-Alt due to a closer distance to the SysRq key. This might help explain why some say REISUB does not work. I've been trying to get rid of many _shotwell.jpg / _shotwell_1.jpg / _shotwell_2.jpg files today, without success so far. The issue I'd like to raise is that when closing Shotwell, either from the menu or with the usual close button, the application doesn't fully stop right away and keeps running in the background, taking a significant part of the system resources (it looks like a full CPU core at 100% out of 4). This is a really unusual behavior among desktop apps, it can decrease the battery life drastically on a laptop if the user doesn't notice, and there is no message informing the user or offering a way to control this when closing the app. Launching Shotwell with export SHOTWELL_LOG=1 shows in the logs that it was in fact still creating new thumbnails for the recently modified pictures (the ones ending in _shotwell.jpg that it has recreated after my deletion attempt) and it finally stopped after a bit more than an hour. >From a user point of view, this is really disturbing. Would it be possible to: 1/ properly stop all long-running background actions (such as thumbnail creation) as soon as the app has been closed by the user? 2/ and maybe offer an option in the settings for users that like the current beavhior? Personally, if I want to keep things running, I simply keep an app open but minimized. But as soon as I close an app, I expect it to stop taking system resources (and certainly not to keep using 25% of total CPU resources for 1h+ long). I don't know if this is a design decision or if I've hit a bug, so let me know if you would need any other input. Btw, I've seen this using the master branch, compiled on commit: b5dd17ea16b1a44933fb65378dc5a30971dcec5a Thanks a lot, Jérôme Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1836019/comments/0 On 2018-03-25T20:05:50+00:00 Jérôme de Bretagne wrote: Created attachment 370124 Extract of shotwell.log showing a small subset of all the thumbnail creations Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1836019/comments/1 On 2018-03-25T21:42:06+00:00 Jens Georg wrote: Did you move your library to a different place? I had changed my username when changing laptops and looking at the database, the older filepath entries in BackingPhotoTable were still pointing to the older location in /home/old_user and not in /home/new_user. Creating a symlink did the trick for me to make the filepath correct, as a quick workaround. Maybe the filepath should be relative instead of absolute for RAW + JPG pairs? Anyway, launching Shotwell right after the symlink creation still took quite a lot of resources the very first time, and closing the window didn't stop all the background activities once again, which is the main topic of this bug. I've let it finish and I've taken the logs, that I'm attaching in case they contain something useful. Now, I'm back with a stable and efficient Shotwell, that's a relief. I'll still need to fix the filepath in the database at some point though. Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1836019/comments/5 ---

Thanks for the bug report. Please try logging into 'Ubuntu on Xorg' (select it on the login screen) and tell us if that has the same bug. Also, bugs like this are often caused by a faulty connection. It could come and go at times when the amount or the structure of data over the cable (DisplayPort??) changes. [Bug 1928932] [NEW] external monitor disabled upon editing file with vim
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This is the strangest bug I've encountered in my 20+ years of linux use. See a video of the bug at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1StYD5kbL5pLRBOc6V-TXuE5DgymTdM0R/view?usp=sharing Using an external monitor I am editing a Snakefile with vim and syntax highlighting. Under certain condition the monitor will go to sleep. 0. download the Snakefile, vimrc, and the colorscheme that are the attached archive 1. move the colorscheme to ~/.vim/colors/ 1. `vim -u vimrc Snakefile` 2. delete one of the quotes, and see the external monitor go into sleep mode. Pertinent points: - If I disable the custom colorscheme or disable syntax highlighting there is no problem. - If I move the gnome-terminal onto the builtin display, then the external monitor reactivates. I wouldn't normally report this bug because it seems so specific to my setup. What is alarming is that a vim session in a gnome-terminal, under certain conditions, can cause the monitor to go to sleep! [Bug 1928791] Re: gnome-shell runs on 60--100% CPU usage
hi, thanks for caring, re 1. yeah, that's right, I got only the 3 default extensions installed re 2. and 3. I think I cannot do this anymore, cuz the problem suddenly disappeared when I reset the "Tweaks" setting to default. So, I reckon, it got something to do with "unlucky" and/or compromised Tweak settings, but I can't tell with ones. I set them back to the setting I *think* I've had before. but the gnome-shell process(es) stay(s) relatively cool, now. and yes, I got animated indicators in my panel like indicator-multiload and clock seconds, however this was only a small percentage in difference. The seconds make up almost no difference at all, and when starting indicator-multiload, now, the gnome-shell only reaches like 25% CPU usage instead of 60-100% without indicator-multiload (prior to resetting the Tweak settings to default). And I don't think it has to do with my Firefox browser or Thunderbird mail client, cause also now when open all of them even with multi Firefox instances (profiles) and Discord, MS Teams. Telegram, Nextcloud client any many more the gnome-shell still stays absolutely cool: top - 10:13:50 up 1:02, 1 user, load average: 2,16, 2,17, 1,59 Tasks: 377 total, 4 running, 373 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie %Cpu(s): 31,3 us, 1,8 sy, 0,0 ni, 65,3 id, 0,1 wa, 0,0 hi, 1,5 si, 0,0 st MiB Mem : 7960,7 total,402,0 free, 5835,6 used, 1723,0 buff/cache MiB Swap: 26058,0 total, 25075,5 free,982,5 used. 1147,8 avail Mem PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 12683 tobias20 0 2653208 300408 224756 R 108,6 3,7 12:59.40 Web Content 8685 tobias20 0 3916848 629076 301284 S 38,1 7,7 6:35.34 firefox 2982 root 20 0 604680 339056 319360 R 27,2 4,2 8:05.53 Xorg 3216 tobias20 0 5564976 892044 80780 S 9,9 10,9 7:16.01 gnome-shell 9149 tobias20 0 4257832 518540 123472 S 3,3 6,4 2:01.05 thunderbird 10894 tobias20 0 4063956 48868 19612 S 2,3 0,6 0:05.50 teams 2983 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 2,0 0,0 0:55.11 irq/35-nvidia 808 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 1,7 0,0 0:53.74 nvidia-modeset/ 10486 tobias20 0 21,0g 159864 46864 S 1,7 2,0 0:43.80 Discord 12272 tobias20 0 818300 51952 35748 S 1,7 0,6 0:11.74 gnome-terminal- 10210 tobias20 0 4928588 62172 20264 S 1,3 0,8 0:24.89 Discord 386 root 19 -1 127172 63600 62776 S 0,7 0,8 0:06.07 systemd-journal 10826 tobias20 0 2508384 352328 49164 S 0,7 4,3 1:15.08 teams 13432 root 20 0 0 0 0 I 0,7 0,0 0:01.30 kworker/4:0-events 1520 root 20 02548720668 S 0,3 0,0 0:17.57 acpid 2985 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,3 0,0 0:06.63 nv_queue 3149 tobias 9 -11 4366744 11612 8696 S 0,3 0,1 0:14.64 pulseaudio 8646 tobias20 0 4177312 564096 253408 S 0,3 6,9 3:23.27 firefox 8858 tobias20 0 20,6g 285284 186692 S 0,3 3,5 1:02.59 Web Content 9072 tobias20 0 14,6g 259344 46428 S 0,3 3,2 0:32.74 WebExtensions 9287 tobias20 0 3558884 212352 42240 S 0,3 2,6 0:28.64 teams 12395 root 20 0 0 0 0 R 0,3 0,0 0:02.24 kworker/3:1-events 13057 root 20 0 0 0 0 I 0,3 0,0 0:01.06 kworker/2:1-events 13070 root 20 0 0 0 0 I 0,3 0,0 0:00.97 kworker/1:4-even

Actually there's a simpler way to test if that's the root cause of this bug.
