[Bug 2039496] [NEW] Ubuntu 22.04 NVidia driver causes 30-sec freezes
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have an Ubuntu 22.04.3 system running on AMD hardware with a GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card. When I install cuda and cuda-drivers higher than cuda=12.0.1-1 and cuda-drivers=525.125.06-1, I randomly experience 30-second freezes in the gnome-shell when I run either Chromium or Firefox. It doesn't happen every time, but pretty often. When I installed cuda 12.2.2-1 and cuda-drivers 535.104.12-1 and all their dependencies, then autoremoved, then rebooted, I launched Chromium and instantly got a 30-second freeze. During the freeze, I can move the mouse and see the pointer moving, but nothing else on the screen changes, and all interactions are frozen. The clock seconds in the top bar don't update until exactly 30 seconds after they stopped -- that's how I know it is consistently 30 seconds. I can't faithfully reproduce the freeze with anything that I've been able to discern, but interaction with either Firefox or Chromium will produce this freeze often enough to be pretty annoying. I don't know if there is any other bad effect going on besides the freeze. To mitigate this, I have put a hold on cuda and cuda-drivers at 12.0.1-1 and 525.125.06-1 respectively, but I would like to be able to upgrade, and I thought I would tackle it now. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem. 2. The behavior you expected. 3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu that you are using.
