[Bug 2062377] Re: Ubuntu 24.04. Xorg crash when dmz-white cursor is selected
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Run these commands: journalctl -b0 > journal.txt journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt and attach the resulting text files here. 2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself. ** Package changed: mutter (Ubuntu) => ubuntu ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062377 Title: Ubuntu 24.04. 1. I have deleted the card0 file and restarted my machine. I still experience the same slowdown using wayland, but not when logging in with x11. The effects are still evident when opening a folder with nautilus, when navigating the system settings, and when choosing a download location for a file in Chrome, for example. 2. I include the journal.txt file you requested 3. Neither gnome-shell nor any other process has been observed to use higher than 12% cpu while experiencing the issue 4. The information about my system drivers was obtained by going to the system Settings app, then System > About > System Details > Copy. The nvidia-utils-545 driver had to be installed when I reinstalled ubuntu and upgraded to 24.04 beta recently, to make the graphics work properly. Scarlett, Ubuntu Studio has `plasma-wallpaper-dynamic` which pulls-in `libqt5positioning5` which pulls in `geoclue-2.0` so Nightcolor detects positioning by default for us. Sorry, that was a rushed response and clearly something needs correcting even if it's just the 61-gdm.rules Our intent is not usually to disable Wayland, but offer Xorg as the default when an Nvidia driver is present. I *think* of the drivers available in Noble it would make sense that Wayland is listed for 535 and above. Just never as the default option. Support for Wayland in Mutter on Nvidia-470 has regressed in recent months/years and may never get fixed since it relies on EGLDevice support which is being abandoned by both GNOME and Nvidia. [Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland
This is correct behaviour because Wayland is not yet stable in the presence of an Nvidia proprietary driver. We hope to fix that by Ubuntu 24.10. The original intention was to enable Wayland for hybrid systems: gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu7) jammy; urgency=medium [ Alberto Milone ] * Default to Wayland for hybrid systems with Nvidia graphics drivers. (LP: #1968929) -- Jeremy Bicha Thu, 21 Apr 2022 06:32:09 -0400 but even that turned out to be unreliable. And added to that there was an uninitialized variable in gdm3(?) we fixed a year or two ago which was also causing the session selection to not follow the udev rules. So it's all very complicated. [Bug 2062128] [NEW] Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland
Public bug reported: I am testing Ubuntu 24.04 beta and using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers (550.67). Prior to installing the drivers packages (using nouveau), the system would load gdm3 in Wayland. After installer the drivers package, the system would load gdm3 in X11. This appears to be caused by the configuration file at /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules However, according to the comments in the rules file, it should prefer Wayland: # Disable wayland when nvidia modeset is disabled or when drivers are a lower # version than 470, # For versions above 470 but lower than 510 prefer Xorg, # Above 510, prefer Wayland. I am able to work around this by making a system override on the file, in /etc/udev/rules.d: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Apr 18 00:34 61-gdm.rules -> /dev/null With this in place, when booting, gdm3 will be loaded with Wayland. ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062128 Title: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/2062128/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
