[Bug 2062377] Re: Ubuntu 24.04. Xorg crash when dmz-white cursor is selected

2024-04-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 2062418] [NEW] gedit ships obsolete /usr/bin/gnome-text-editor alternative

2024-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Public bug reported:

gedit ships an entry for Debian's alternatives system for
/usr/bin/gnome-text-editor and a corresponding manpage.

However, there is now a real app named gnome-text-editor that ships

Therefore we should remove the entry in Debian's alternative system.

[Bug 2062082] Re: 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

2024-04-18 Thread Sam Bee
1. I have deleted the card0 file and restarted my machine. I still
experience the same slowdown using wayland, but not when logging in with
x11. The effects are still evident when opening a folder with nautilus,
when navigating the system settings, and when choosing a download
location for a file in Chrome, for example.

2. I include the journal.txt file you requested

3. Neither gnome-shell nor any other process has been observed to use
higher than 12% cpu while experiencing the issue

4. The information about my system drivers was obtained by going to the
system Settings app, then System > About > System Details > Copy. The
nvidia-utils-545 driver had to be installed when I reinstalled ubuntu
and upgraded to 24.04 beta recently, to make the graphics work properly.
I don't know what the zink Vulkan thing is - is that the name of the
firmware for my graphics card?

[Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-18 Thread Jamie R. McPeek
>>> Is the machine a desktop with a single GPU or laptop with hybrid

This machine is a hybrid/optimus setup with an Intel iGPU and NVIDIA
dGPU:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-HX GT1 [UHD
Graphics 770] (rev 0c)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA107GLM [RTX A2000 8GB
Laptop GPU] (rev a1)

The system UEFI is configured to enable hybrid and the proprietary
NVIDIA driver is configured as "on demand".

In the setup at my desk, I am connected to a thunderbolt dock, which is
connected to external monitors via DisplayPort. The laptop operates
"closed lid" from power up.

[Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Marco,

Context: Scarlett is the lead for Kubuntu, so she's looking at it from a
KDE Plasma perspective, which for her packaging purposes would need a
dpkg-divert to switch the geoclue.conf to something else, but that's not
exactly a problem for her as it's not a package they ship by default.

Marco,

this is a temporary issue for 24.04 only. In 24.10 (hopefully) we
will drop this current version of magpie and X11 support- so there
shouldn't be any dependency links.

Same issue. It also appears that "larger" directories (with more files,

[Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Scarlett,

Ubuntu Studio has `plasma-wallpaper-dynamic` which pulls-in
`libqt5positioning5` which pulls in `geoclue-2.0` so Nightcolor detects
positioning by default for us. Apparently, it says this:

"The device's location will be periodically updated using GPS (if
available), or by sending network information to Mozilla Location
Service."

So yes, you're tangentially affected, just not by default. However,
geoclue does have a ton of ways to detect verses MLS, incuding Google,
so that does appear to be an option.

Have discussed this with jbicha on matrix - magpie needs to revert the

coordinated.

When mozilla service is not used, GeoIP is used instead. It's not

[Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
Mozilla Location Services will be closed to all third parties (including
Ubuntu, GNOME, KDE, etc.) on June 12, 2024.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any suitable replacement for
our typical desktop and laptop users. (Mobile devices like phones may
have GPS that could be used but those devices would only rarely be using
  Ubuntu and gnome-control-center.)

To avoid later UI changes and disruption only a few months from now, the
Ubuntu Desktop team would prefer to disable location services before
  Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is released.
+
+ Details
+ ---
+ Specifically, this hides
+ - Privacy & Security > Location
+ - Date & Time > Automatic Timezone
+ - Displays > Night Light > Schedule > Sunrise to Sunset
+ + This last one wasn't done yet, but I expect it for gnome-control-center
46.1 which will be an SRU
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/3014

  Other Info
  --
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/2959

gnome-control-center 46.1 to be released in a few days will also disable
Location Services by default but with a build-time option for distros
who have different deadlines and user profiles.

If an alternative location provider is found that works well enough for
our users, we intend to re-enable this feature with a Stable Release
  Update if possible.

Because of this issue, Ubuntu has disabled the Location page in gnome-
  initial-setup for 24.04 LTS already.

[Bug 2062178] [NEW] Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Public bug reported:

Impact
--
Mozilla Location Services will be closed to all third parties (including
Ubuntu, GNOME, KDE, etc.) on June 12, 2024.

Other Info
--
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/2959

gnome-control-center 46.1 to be released in a few days will also disable
Location Services by default but with a build-time option for distros
who have different deadlines and user profiles.

If an alternative location provider is found that works well enough for
our users, we intend to re-enable this feature with a Stable Release
Update if possible.

Because of this issue, Ubuntu has disabled the Location page in gnome-
initial-setup for 24.04 LTS already.

  * Install and divert app grid icon correctly (LP: #2060816)
Also uses new naming nomenclature to work with new dock
bugfixes as described in conversation in aforementioned
bug report where the default app grid icon is being replaced
by an Ubuntu icon. That icon is then diverted here for an
Edubuntu icon. Discussions also took place on Matrix

[Bug 2061729] Re: Ubuntu Dock icon highlight is practically invisible when a white or grey window is behind it

  * Sync with `org.gnome.Settings` symbolic icons changes
  * add org.gnome.Nautilus* symbolic icons and revert app-grid icon

  [ Muqtxdir ]
  * add @ubuntujaggers refined app-center fullcolor icon (no visual changes)

  [ Marco Trevisan (Treviño) ]
  * gtk/common: Sync with upstream fixes
  * icons: Remove start-here-symbolic symlink that was breaking view-app-grid.
  * icons: Add view-app-grid-ubuntu-symbolic symlink to start-here
(LP: #2060816).
  * gnome-shell/dock: Use more visible background on highlighted icons
(LP: #2061729)
  * gnome-shell/dock: Draw focused icons with highlight background
(LP: #2062044)
  * icons: Re-render icons and regenerate symlinks
  * debian/control: Add Breaks on ubuntu-dock << 90~
It doesn't really break it but if we'd release this version of the icon
theme before of the new dock, we'd end up changing the dock's show-apps
icon, breaking the UI freeze (related to lp:2060816).

[Bug 2060659] Re: X11 fractional scaling support is missing in 46.0

2024-04-18 Thread Harald Hannelius
I can report that the packages 46.0-1ubuntu8 works like a charm, many
thanks! Downloaded the from here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter

I did however had to use --force-overwrite on mutter-common since there
was a conflict with the file
./usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/org.gnome.mutter.gschema.xml that is also
provided by magpie-common. This could also have been a side effect from
my testing. What I can tell there's still that conflict.

[Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, that was a rushed response and clearly something needs correcting
even if it's just the 61-gdm.rules

Our intent is not usually to disable Wayland, but offer Xorg as the
default when an Nvidia driver is present.

I *think* of the drivers available in Noble it would make sense that
Wayland is listed for 535 and above. Just never as the default option.

Support for Wayland in Mutter on Nvidia-470 has regressed in recent
months/years and may never get fixed since it relies on EGLDevice
support which is being abandoned by both GNOME and Nvidia. So "lower
version than 470" sounds like it needs changing if we can't fix Mutter.

[Bug 2056767] Re: FFe: Sync gnome-software 46.0-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main) with gnome-software packaging split

2024-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
The split is required to allow people to use the gnome-software app
without .deb support. Some people want the app just for Flatpaks because
the Snap Store handles .deb's and Snaps. I have seen several requests
for this.

I apologize for not pinging loud enough but I had finalized the FFe
request by April 1/April 2.

2024-04-18 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Hey, hi!

Quick question, the main concern is about splitting of the .deb into
multiple binaries. Can this not happen in the next cycle? I'm always
hesitant to bring in changes for LTS at the eleventh hour? What do you

[Bug 2061090] Re: [FFe] add libheif as a dependency

2024-04-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Ubuntu Release, now that libheif is allowed in Main, Ubuntu Desktop
requests a follow-up FFe to:

Have gnome-control-center & shotwell Depend on heif-gdk-pixbuf & heif-
thumbnailer. Both those packages are built from the same libheif source
package and have no further universe dependencies.

gnome-control-center is seeded in Ubuntu Desktop & Edubuntu
shotwell is seeded in Ubuntu Desktop (expanded install), Ubuntu Cinnamon,
Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Unity

The heif format is already mentioned in Shotwell's .desktop files so it
is actually a bug that heif-gdk-pixbuf was not a dependency already.

[Bug 2061292] Re: Reduce animation setting gets forgotten on every reboot

2024-04-18 Thread Alistair Cunningham
I think I've figured out why this is happening. If I restart directly
into Ubuntu, then it works correctly and the setting is remembered.
However, if I restart into Unity, then back into Ubuntu, the setting is
forgotten. Perhaps Unity is overwriting the setting?

[Bug 2061739] Re: crash in meta_wayland_transaction_commit

2024-04-18 Thread Patrice DUROUX
Ok regarding my env:

$ gnome-extensions list --enabled
$ gsettings get org.gnome.shell enabled-extensions
@as []

I did not removed gnome-shell-extensions because this will break the
gnome-core installed.

It crashed again this morning:

May be the problem was with libmozjs then.
I saw that a new version have been pushed:

$ dpkg -l | grep libmoz

ii libmozjs-115-0t64-dbgsym:amd64 115.10.0-1
   amd64debug symbols for libmozjs-115-0t64

and I did an update then, so let see!

[Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is correct behaviour because Wayland is not yet stable in the
presence of an Nvidia proprietary driver. We hope to fix that by Ubuntu
24.10.

The original intention was to enable Wayland for hybrid systems:

gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu7) jammy; urgency=medium

  [ Alberto Milone ]
  * Default to Wayland for hybrid systems with Nvidia graphics drivers.
Default to Xorg but offer Wayland with the gear button on the login
screen for non-hybrid systems with Nvidia graphics drivers. (LP: #1968929)

 -- Jeremy Bicha Thu, 21 Apr 2022 06:32:09 -0400

but even that turned out to be unreliable. And added to that there was
an uninitialized variable in gdm3(?) we fixed a year or two ago which
was also causing the session selection to not follow the udev rules.

So it's all very complicated. Overall we would prefer Nvidia systems DID
NOT show a Wayland login option yet, but since you've figured out how to
enable it, please be aware of the bug list:

Just checked and it seems that there is no such issue on Ubuntu 24.04
Beta. I hope the release version will be the same.

[Bug 2062128] [NEW] Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-04-18 Thread Jamie R. McPeek
Public bug reported:

I am testing Ubuntu 24.04 beta and using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers
(550.67).

Prior to installing the drivers packages (using nouveau), the system
would load gdm3 in Wayland.

After installer the drivers package, the system would load gdm3 in X11.

This appears to be caused by the configuration file at
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules

However, according to the comments in the rules file, it should prefer
Wayland:

# Disable wayland when nvidia modeset is disabled or when drivers are a lower
# version than 470,
# For versions above 470 but lower than 510 prefer Xorg,
# Above 510, prefer Wayland.

I am able to work around this by making a system override on the file,
in /etc/udev/rules.d:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Apr 18 00:34 61-gdm.rules -> /dev/null

With this in place, when booting, gdm3 will be loaded with Wayland.
