[Bug 253804] [NEW] Possible SVG vulnerability affecting Firefox, evince, eog, Gimp and more

2008-07-31 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

There's an exploit published on July 8, 2008 at
http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/6029 that says:

"Malicious SVG file DoS

The following applications were tested in their latest revisions:
Firefox's "browse for file, preview" object on linux: affected
evince on linux: affected
eog on linux: affected
gimp on linux: affected
inkscape on linux: unaffected
Microsoft Visio on windows: unaffected

It is unknown at this time whether code execution is possible..."

Unfortunately I currently lack the resources to verify the existence of
the vulnerability.

WARNING: the .zip file might harm your computer. Don't open it on your
normal machine.

A more or less safe way to test it would be to physically disconnect any
important devices (all hard disks, network connections to any networks
that trust your machine, etc.) and to boot from a live CD. But you
should still know what you're doing.

No, I didn't test it at all because I've got only one machine and it's
in production use right now. I will post an update if I can reproduce
it. I've also posted the link to oss-security in case anybody is
interested to check whether it is a fake or not.

I'd say that this is a gnome-keyring issue. Usually you wont have to
enter your password after login to open the keyring. not sure if that is
broken for "no-password" logins. Please verify that this still exists in

we have builds for NM 0.7 in ~network-manager PPA you could try
that to connect to CDMA.

[Bug 261411] [NEW] sending mail+server problem = mail lost

2008-08-26 Thread Alexander Bürger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I tried to send a mail just a minute ago, and there was some problem
with the mail server (probably).

Evolution showed a warning in the status bar, and when I clicked it
showed a message box saying something like "RCPT TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED] temporary
failure" (I have clicked away the dialog to look in the "Drafts"
folder). So far so good. But: the mail was neither sent nor saved.

This is very annoying! Mail should not disappear, it should either go to
the sent or to the drafts folder.

Best wishes,

2008-09-04 Thread Alexander Bürger
Fortunately this problem did only occur once, and after waiting for a
while, everything was as it should be, so it is too late now for a
screenshot.

I finally found time to try with a little python smtp server failing at
"RCPT TO", but this did not reproduce the problem: the email went
straight to the outbox. I do not know what else I could try to reproduce
the problem, but suggestions are welcome. Or the bug can be closed.

Re: [Bug 74670] Re: GNOME Clock has duplicate 0x20's on single-figure dates

2008-09-20 Thread Alexander Jones
Still an issue. In general, date and time strings are generated all
over GNOME with simple gettext tokens. I don't see this going away
until we add stuff to GLib.

The band-aid solution for Clock Applet is to collapse multiple spaces
into 1 space, as there is no strftime token that prints the
day-of-month without padding.

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-09-24 Thread Alexander Sack
thanks for your patch. I would like to consider this. Just one comment
for now:

+nm_device_other_update_ppp (NMData *data,
+ gboolean is_connected)

isnt that a new function which should be declared in some header?

Is it only ppp that causes issues? I think the most failsafe way would
be to say that once we have an interface with an IP, we are "not-
offline". You think you could extend your 0.6 patch accordingly?

Further, we need a similar approach for NM 0.7. The other heuristic we
could use would be to add a new "non-offline" state (MAYBE_OFFLINE),
which is used instead of online if there is any unmanaged device.
Combining this with the IP-is-set heuristic above, could make offline
state more accurate even.

Feel free to ping me in #ubuntu-mozillateam or -devel to get all this
sorted out and landed in intrepid (and hardy for 0.6.6).

Thanks a lot.

[Bug 275560] [NEW] Gnome Screensaver should optionally disable audio input and output

2008-09-28 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

This is an enhancement request related to a low-risk security
vulnerability. Nothing serious but still would be nice to have this
implemented.

Currently you can password-protect your screen and input devices like
keyboard and mouse using the Gnome Screensaver. This is useful when you
need to leave the computer unattended for a while in a moderately
insecure environment. But the audio input/output is not locked by the
screensaver and that opens up a vulnerability.

Here is a use case.

You talk with Bob using Ekiga Softphone (an Internet telephony client).
Then you lock your computer's screen and go out for a short while. If
someone approaches your computer while you're out, they can use your
headphones and microphone and may be able to impersonate you to Bob or
hear some confidential talk that Bob intended only for you to hear.

Gnome Screensaver should have an option to control whether audio input
and output are enabled while your screen is locked.

If you are aware of the risk, an easy (albeit often inconvenient) work-
around exists: disconnect your Ekiga call before leaving — and generally
make sure that running programs neither use the audio input from the
microphone nor emit any confidential sounds. If the user doesn't have a
security mindset, however, there is a chance that she won't think of
this risk at all and will remain exposed.

Although technically it is true that if the attacker can physically
access your machine you're lost from the security point of view,
actually there are many environments (like your home or maybe your
workplace) where a screensaver lock is enough to stop casual
eavesdroppers because they are not technically competent or because they
wouldn't risk to mount a more serious attack which might involve opening
up the case, connecting suspicious devices to it, etc. After all, nobody
says that the screensaver password locking feature is _useless_. If it
is useful to some extent, so will be the feature suggested here.

Feel free to copy this suggestion to the upstream bug tracker. I just
wanted to collect some feedback here first.

[Bug 178253] Re: flashplugin-nonfree not working with epiphany

2008-01-03 Thread Alexander Sack
this has been fixed by recent xulrunner-1.9 + flashplugin-nonfree
uploads:

flashplugin-nonfree (9.0.115.0ubuntu3) hardy; urgency=low

  * add support for xulrunner-1.9; install plugin to
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins:
- update debian/dirs
- update debian/postinst
  * add firefox-3.0 and xulrunner-1.9 to Suggests
- update debian/control

 -- Alexander Sack < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 03 Jan 2008 10:45:34 +0100

xulrunner-1.9 (1.9~b3~cvs20080101t1000+nobinonly-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * happy new year release for hardy (1.9b3 pre, CVS 20080101t1000) features:
- use system-cairo (LP: #152210, LP: #164640)
- use system-nspr/nss (LP: #177280)
- proper pkg-config files for -unstable and system-nspr/nss (see below)
- backed-out microb changes (back to square zero)
- fix various embedding issues (see below)

  [ Fabien Tassin ]
  * Disable bz404634_att290373.patch and bz373196_att281782.patch until trunk
is back in shape after the MicroB mass back out (See MozBug #408238)
- update debian/patches/series
  * new upstream snapshot (1.9b3 pre, CVS 20071228t0918)
  * Drop patch committed upstream:
- drop debian/patches/bz287150_att291740_hppa_fix.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * Add support for mozilla-devscripts
- update debian/control
- update debian/rules

  [ Alexander Sack ]
  * drop patches for mozilla bug #404634 completely to prepare landing of
improved patch:
- drop debian/patches/bz404634_att290305.patch
- drop debian/patches/bz404634_att290373.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * land improved patch for mozilla bug #404634 that properly disables
url-classifier if no profile is setup and makes nsUrlClassifierDBService
fall-back to NS_APP_USER_PROFILE_50_DIR if NS_APP_USER_PROFILE_LOCAL_50_DIR
is not provided by embedding app.
- add debian/patches/bz404634_att294921.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * remove bz373196_att281782.patch completely from tree as it tackled a MICROB
regression, which should now be fixed.
  * add %FULL_NSPR_CFLAGS% to libxul-embedding* Cflags .pc files to fix
builds of embedders that link against system-nspr enabled xul
- update debian/patches/bzXXX_pc_honour_system_nspr_nss.patch
  * do not export zlib headers with bogus symbols during make install if
system zlib is used. This breaks embedders and happens if MOZ_INSTALLER
is enabled.
- add debian/patches/bzXXX_no_zlib_export_if_native.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * drop mozilla-devscripts from build-depends as its not needed for the
actual package build process. Take care that debian/rules disables the
mozilla-devscripts include if it doesn't exist
- update debian/control
- update debian/rules
  * add gtkmozembed_internal.h symbols to glue (mozilla bug 373918):
- add debian/patches/bz373918_att295042.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * add support for GRE extensions and plugins. We now search in PROFILE, APP
and GRE dir.
- add debian/patches/bzXXX_gre_extension_plugin_support.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * explicitly create addon directories
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/{plugins,extensions}
- update debian/xulrunner-1.9.dirs
  * drop hard-coded --with-system-nspr and --with-system-nss from CONFIGURE
flags
- update debian/rules
  * don't enforce lower bound of system cairo and system nss versions
- update debian/control

xulrunner-1.9 (1.9~b2+nobinonly-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  [ Fabien Tassin ]
  * new upstream snapshot (1.9b2) from tag FIREFOX_3_0b2_RELEASE
  * Update diverged patch:
- update debian/patches/bz399589_fix_missing_symbol_with_new_nss.patch
  * Fix FTBFS on Hardy when using system nss. See MozBug #403994.
- add
debian/patches/bz403994_dont_install_nss_includes_with_system_nss.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * Drop patches for bugs which recently landed
- drop debian/patches/bz405424_att290202.patch
- drop debian/patches/fix_ppc_ftbfs.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * Update rules for system cairo >= 1.5.4. It's still conditioned
by the presence or not of libcairo 1.5.* in hardy, also conditioning
lcd sub-pixel rendering
- update debian/rules
- add debian/patches/bz344818_cairo_xrender.patch
- update debian/patches/series
  * add libpixman-1-dev to build-deps, needed by cairo
- update debian/control
  * Update Standards-Version to 3.7.3
- update debian/control
  * Re-enable DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_AUTOCONF=2.13 and depends on autoconf2.13
(will be dropped for final release)
- update debian/control
- update debian/rules

and update versions based on
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Linux/Runtime_Requirements
- update debian/control
  * Add --enable-startup-notification and libstartup-notification0-dev to
build-deps
- update d

[Bug 181001] fix sparc crash - proper align

2008-01-07 Thread Alexander Sack
Public bug reported:

firefox-3.0 crashes on sparc because of bogus alignment.

A patch has been committed upstream (both: cairo + mozilla in-source
cairo).

The bugzilla.mozilla.org bug has more information:

Prepatch this if you consider sparc important enough :)

The patch has been prepared by Raúl Porcel and can be downloaded here:

[Bug 38185] transparent panel: strange color problems

2006-04-05 Thread Alexander Kirillov
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In dapper flight 6, if desktop background is a tiled picture and panel
background is "transparent", this results in the panel, instead of being
transparent, acquiring a starnge color. See attached screen shot.

This only happens if desktop background is set to "tiled" - for other

 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:

--
Cannot open PS9.pdf
The filename "PS9.pdf" indicates that this file is of type "PDF document". The
contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "plain text document".
If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file
from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct
extension for "plain text document", then open the file normally.
Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the
file.

The properties dialofg shows file type as "plain text". However, the file is
indeed a PDF file; it starts with

the same file on Ubuntu Breezy machine, where it was indentified as "PDF

[Bug 38185] Re: transparent panel: strange color problems

2006-04-05 Thread Alexander Kirillov
You can see all my settings in the screenshot - it shows "panel properties"
dialog and desktop background dialog.

In particular, I have set panel transparency to 100% (transparent), but had
chosen the panel background color to be light blue. Since the desktop
background is also mostly light blue, this strange color showing up can not be
the mixture of the panel background and desktop background.

I do nto know if it makes any diference that I am using a laptop, with Intel's
915 graphics accelerator.

[Bug 38319] Re: Nautilus uses wrong icons for text files

2006-04-13 Thread Alexander Kirillov
I am using Tangerine - but I also tried Human, GNOME, Lush... In all cases, I
get the same problem: icon used for text/* types is the "blank page" icon, e.g.
for text/x-tex files in for gnome theme, I get gnome-fs-regular icon, instead
of "gnome-mime-applicationx-tex".

As I said, I in Nautilus options I had disabled text preview in icons: set
Nautilus preferences->Preview->Text files->Show text in icons" to "Never" and
try again

[Bug 40646] "cdda:///dev/hdc" is not a valid location

2006-04-21 Thread Alexander Kirillov
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In Dapper Beta, I get this error:
"cdda:///dev/hdc" is not a valid location
if I click on "audio disk" in Places menu in the left pane of the file browser.
There is an audio CD in the drive, and clicking on Audio Disk icon on desktop,
or Places menu in the panel works fine - it opens Sound Juicer (BTW: there is
no GUI to configure what app should be used for this - but this is a goal for
the future)

2006-05-16 Thread Alexander Kirillov
What puzzles me is that clicking on audio CD in "Places" menu in the
panel works - but in left pane of Nautilus it doesn't. I'd think they
use the same cdda handler...

[Bug 38403] wrong size fonts used in firefox GUI

2006-05-16 Thread Alexander Kirillov
Public bug reported:

when using non-standard dot-per-inch setting (on my system, I use 120dpi
in GNOME fonts preferences -- which matches the value reported by
xdpyinfo), fonts used by firefox are different size than those used by
other GNOME apps. This applies not only to fonts used for showing web
page contents, but also fonts used for GUI (menus etc). See attached
screenshot.

No its not set in profile prefs.js because you don't have overwritten
the firefox system setting ... which might be set somewhere in
/usr/lib/firefox/defaults/pref

applications that want to read firefox preferences have to ensure that
they read global settings as well ...

[Bug 132788] gedit doesn't notice that a file has been renamed

2007-08-15 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When you edit a file in gedit and the file is renamed, gedit doesn't
notice that the file on disk has disappeared. Instead, when trying to
save a file that has been renamed, a warning should appear, similar to
the yellow warning bar that appears when a file content has been
modified by another program.

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Open a new file in gedit. Save it to ~/foobar
2. Rename the file ~/foobar to ~/foobar.new
3. Modify the file inside gedit (this step can be omitted)
4. Press the Save button

A new file ~/foobar is silently written. No indication is given to the
user that the file was not there when saving.

Expected behavior:

Show a warning that the file has been renamed, moved, or deleted. Ask
the user whether she really wants to save the file under the old name
(to the old location). Better yet, determine what exactly happened to
the file (was it renamed, moved, or deleted). If the file has been moved
or renamed, suggest to save the file in the new location or under the
new name, respectively.

[Bug 132812] When moving, renaming, deleting files, their backup copies are not modified

2007-08-15 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When moving, renaming, and deleting files that have backup copies (those
have the same filename with a tilde in the end, like 'filename~'), the
backup copy is not affected by any such change to the main file. Since
the backup copies are usually invisible (they are hidden by default),
that leads to counter-intuitive experience, where as many files are
moved, renamed, and deleted, they leave hidden traces that contain old
information (which is potentially sensitive) and occupy disk space.
Those remaining backup files usually have to be cleaned up manually, and
some end up hanging around for a long time without being cleaned up.

One way to fix this is to automatically apply the same change (renaming,
moving, or deletion) to the backup copy if one exist.
