Thanks.  I also used GRIP under Red Hat 9 (and maybe 8?) it just 
works and works well. 

I've simply given up on sound-juicer

Ditto.  Just tried to run sound-juicer first time this afternoon.
Dialogs have a focus on the previous dialog.  If you close the previous
dialog, you can edit the profile, but then the profile is not visible,
and you can't select the profile it later on.

I installed the gstreamer lame plugin as requested, but problem remains
as indicated above.
