I'm sorry I didn't follow up on this one. Coincidentally I upgraded from gutsy to hardy yesterday and found that this problem no longer exists, that is, I can normally logon using xdmcp. I ran into the same problem renaming a directory to Ambient 1: Music for Airports on a (nautilus mounted?) smb volume. The name is probably illegal because of the colon. Nautlius changed it to ALL55E~C (?).
