[Bug 2040453] Re: Gnome 45 crash on restart in X11 session [Window manager error: Another compositing manager is already running on screen 0 on display “:0”]

2023-10-25 Thread Batwam
yeah, I haven't necessarily reported every crash I've experienced in
launchpad as I've been restarting gnome-shell quite a bit when updating
my extensions to gnome45 and couldn't be sure whether the crash was
caused by the extension or gnome-shell itself.

This crash on the other hand stayed when I upgraded on bare metal and
was also reported by a number of people contributing to gnome-extensions
which is why I felt it was worth investigating. I have seen extensions
commenting on this in their ReadMe and I'm yet to find someone who isn't
experiencing a crash when restarting gnome-shell on X11.

[Bug 2040453] Re: Gnome 45 crash on restart in X11 session

2023-10-25 Thread Batwam
thanks for following up. I have attached my journal.txt and you will
find the same error in at as in the gnome-shell gitlab bug `Window
manager error: Another compositing manager is already running on screen
0 on display “:0”`.

Also, the same behaviour occurs as if I close all windows before
restarting, it doesn't crash which is what made me think that they are
related. I also only started noticing this when I started to test 23.10
in gnome-boxes prior to the release (I frequently do gnome-shell
restarts as I contribute to extensions) and noticed this behaviour right
away as I never had the issue with 23.04. As soon as I upgraded my
machine, the restarts started to crash (which makes testing extensions
quite tedious).

note that I cleared up the journal before running this test. I also
cleared up my crash logs to see but it's not generating any report.

There are a number of gnome-shell crashes linked to my woopside-id, including
the following:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/0b660737-7287-11ee-9b14-fa163ec44ecd
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/14ef2be8-195c-11ee-b183-fa163e55efd0
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/1a4daae8-0925-11ee-bcf5-fa163ef35206

I am not sure the above reports are directly connected to this issue but
based on the fact that many people seem to be having the same issue
since gnome45 is out, this doesn't look like an isolated issue. See this
discussion on github for instance: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/-/issues/7050

[Bug 2040453] [NEW] Gnome 45 crash on restart in X11 session

2023-10-25 Thread Batwam
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 23.10 with Gnome45, it is no longer possible
to restart gnome-shell without crashing the session. The only way not to
crash it is to close all applications before restarting gnome-shell. I
have verified this too.

This has already been reported upstream:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/7050
a tentative patch for mutter proposed:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/7050#note_1876598

Please consider reviewing/testing this patch and pushing an update so
people can restart gnome-shell session without crashing it.

Looks like the app itself has a custom dark theme but your window theme
is still light. You would probably get something similar if you used a
custom dark theme in something like chrome/arduino/libreoffice/… . Do
you get a dark top bar when setting to dark in the quick menu?

There is, set the style to Dark using the quick menu toggle and don’t
use the Appearance tab in Settings. As long as you don’t go in that
Settings section, the theme will stay dark. I’ve been doing this since I
first noticed the issue and the windows have remained dark.

2022-10-22 Thread Batwam
correct, and this issue occurs when the Appearance tab ob th Settings
app is activated (or Settings open with Appearance being the previous
section) so the issue is likely to sit within the init part of the code
of the Appearance tab which seems to be resetting (or do an action which
causing the reset) the theme.

Also, if you open Gnome Tweaks, you will see that when selecting Dark
via the quick menu, the themes are changed to *-dark". if you do the
same thing using Settings, the theme isn't changed at all.

[Bug 1993874] [NEW] Settings and Quick Menu apply Dark style differently

2022-10-21 Thread Batwam
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 22.10 and noticed that some of my apps were no
longer in Dark mode including gedit/chrome. When setting the style
through the quick menu however, these apps go to Dark mode (presumably
due to gtk theme being applied). Likewise for the quick menu itself,
setting the style to Dark in gnome-control-settings doesn't change it to
dark, it remains light.

see screenshot attached, you will see that when setting the style to
Dark in Settings, gedit and the quick menu remain light. I tried to
logout in case it was an issue with how the settings are applied but it
didn't help. it's also clear that the toggle in the quick menu works as
intended so there seems to be an issue with the way gnome-control-center
applies the Dark style.

That's right, this becomes quite visible with Extension settings as they
can be quite lengthy and the default window size it often too small. I
am not sure I agree with the design choice but I believe that this is
outside of the scope of this bug report so I'm happy for this report to
be closed since the system behaves as intended. I will leave it to you
and the design team to decide if you want to revisit this design choise
in the future or not.

Thanks Daniel, this fixed the odd preference window behaviour. Glad to
see it's a feature and not a bug. I would still question why we want
this active by default though considering the lack of consistency with

Yes, I updated the title as it appears that this behaviour applies to
all Preferences/Settings dialogs. This behaviour looks extremely odd and
is inconsistent with the resizing mechanism for other windows (and
inconsistent with the same windows in Xorg). If I grab the bottom
corner, I want to move the bottom corner, not the top.

[Bug 1969558] Re: Incorrect Window Resizing for Extension Settings

2022-04-20 Thread Batwam
alright, even better, I just downloaded a pre-release of 22.04 and
installed it into gnome box to check if it's my session or not. I
litterally just installed as a virtual machine, didn't change any
setting and the issue is there too (using Wayland).

[Bug 1969558] Re: Incorrect Window Resizing for Extension Settings

2022-04-20 Thread Batwam
ok, I just created a new user to see if this could have something to do
with settings I might have changed or extensions but the brand new
profile has the same issue. This looks somewhat similar to this issue
which was also Wayland specific:

helli, I just turned off all extension and restarted but this is still
happening. I did however notice that I don't have this issue if I log in
using Ubuntu on Xorg so it might be Wayland related.

[Bug 1969558] [NEW] Incorrect Window Resizing for Extension Settings

2022-04-19 Thread Batwam
Public bug reported:

Issue with gnome-extensions-app

While the main Extensions windows behaves normally when being resizes,
for Extension Settings, when dragging the bottom corner up, the top of
the window also goes down. If I drag the bottom corner down, the top
edge goes up... See screenshots attached. I each case, I only adjusted
the bottom corner, yet, the top edge moved which is not consistent with
the normal window resizing behaviour.
