[Bug 1600622] Re: Screen doesn't lock or go to sleep when certain Chrome tabs are open

2020-11-12 Thread Blue
My 2c, no website should ever be able to dictate if my monitor goes or
not to standby. More to the point, I think the screen locking is also
disabled and this makes it a potential security issue, as it would be
trivial for any external party to weaken the security profile applied by
the user. Just as we control how we must explicitly allow websites to
grab audio, or video, we should also explicitly control if it can
override other system settings. Or, there should be something similar
with how macos or android grants some permissions on a per-app basis.

[Bug 1349712] [NEW] Unreliable operation for some shortcuts

2014-07-29 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 with flashback metacity session.
I configured the "launch terminal" on the s shortcut. I also searched
and replaced in dconf all other shortcuts with Super+s
However, the operation of this shortcut is extremely unreliable : sometimes it
does not work at all, some other times it does work but only if i keep the
Super key pressed significantly longer. More than that, in order to work i have
to :
press super -> press s -> release s -> release super.
I also configured a Super+e shortcut for "home folder". This one works every
time provided that the long sequence above is respected :
press super -> press e -> release e -> release super.

I would expect :
1.Super+s to work every time (it seems that something else may "consume" the
event but i cannot find what it is, as nothing seems to happen visually when
super+s does not launch the terminal.
 2. When the shortcuts are processed, i would expect the configured
script/execution/action to be executed right after
press super-> press shortcut letter, WITHOUT requiring the long super press.

What is even more weird is that if i use flashback session with compiz, the
shortcuts seem to always work and to work fast (without long super press).

[Bug 887983] Re: Preview pane does not refresh after previewing a very large message

2012-10-30 Thread Blue
Update:
On another bugreport for the same issue, someone recommended this workaround :
LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 exec evolution
This will disable the new fancy scrollbars for evolution, but will also make it
immune to the above bug.
One can make a wrapper script to launch evolution with this environment
variable.

Someone should check this bug out, it's clear that either evolution or
some toolkit components (gtk/gdk) has an issue with those new
scrollbars.

[Bug 887983] Re: Preview pane does not refresh after previewing a very large message

2012-10-29 Thread Blue
I have this issue too.
I doubt it's gfx driver related as this:
- only happens to evolution
- only happens to the preview pane (but not when opening the same message in a
new window with double click)
- there are no driver related errors in the system logs; And the system works
just fine after this error occurs.
- HOWEVER, when the error happens, the .xsession-errors log file gets flooded
with errors like :

(evolution:6261): Gdk-WARNING **: Native children wider or taller than
65535 pixels are not supported

[Bug 990383] [NEW] Gedit terminal plugin fails to display correct colours

2012-04-28 Thread Blue Cunningham
Public bug reported:

If an embedded terminal is used as a plugin, then it fails to display
using the default colours for Gnome Terminal, but defaults to white on
white. This renders the plugin unusable. There is no obvious way in
which the colours can changed from within Gedit. I have changed the
default colours in use by Gnome Terminal (3.4.1.1) but this does not
result in a change for the embedded terminal in Gedit, even after
restarting Gedit. The version of gedit-plugins in use is
3.3.4-0ubuntu1.

This fault has arisen after an update from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04
LTS (Release 12.04). The plugin is now unusable.

[Bug 580684] Re: Inconsistent / not functioning "Places" entries and nautilus tries to mount already mounted resources

2010-10-16 Thread Blue
Unfortunately no, I cannot test this on Maverick as the machines where I
encounter this are business workstations that can only be upgraded to a
new LTS release. And being a LTS release one would expect a little more
care for the users of such releases . In other words, I would expect a
fix for this release, not for the next. If a newer or a patched gfvs
would reach the "proposed" repositories, I would test it and give
feedback here.

Thank you.

[Bug 580684] [NEW] Inconsistent / not functioning "Places" entries and nautilus tries to mount already mounted resources

2010-05-14 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

The "Places" menu in Ubuntu Lucid is populated with inconsistent entries, or
rather it is overpopulated.
The issue seems to be RELATED to bug #442130, but it's not about duplicate
entries but rather wrong entries.
Encrypted local volumes and network (nfs) filesystems are problematic.
1). filesystems on encrypted block devices (using luks)
I set up /home as an encrypted filesystem. I use sda3 for that. I put esda3
/dev/sda3 in /etc/crypttab and
UUID=x../home   ext4 . in /etc/fstab. UUID is the uuid
of the encrypted filesystem, not of the underlying encrypted block device.
Everything works fine, the system asks the passphrase for the encrypted volume
at boot and then i can log in.
However, in the places menu an entry is added under removable media for "esda3"
- which eventually could be ok only if one could use it : if it is clicked an
error apears with :
---
Unable to mount esda3
/dev/mapper/esda3 is mounted
---
I should mention that I get the same error if I put /dev/mapper/esda3 instead
of UUID= in /etc/fstab. Somehow nautilus/gvfs is not able to detect that a
certain entry in fstab refers to an already mounted filesystem and will try to
mount it. The kernel however knows you are trying to mount an already mounted
resource and so the mount does not happen and we get that error.
2). The same as above happens with nfs filesystem entries in fstab that were
previously mounted using CLI.
For example an entry like :
host:/mnt/d5/media/d5 nfs user,noauto,tcp,hard0 0
will be added to the places menu in both the system menu, nautilus and file
open dialogs. However, if one mounts that filesystem using CLI, trying to
access that fs using system menu's places fails as (again) nautilus tries to
mount the filesystem by itself, not realizing that the fs is already mounted.
And of course this ends with another mount error instead of just
entering/browsing that resource. It seems however that opening a new nautilus
window will correctly see those filesystems as mounted and does not try to
mount it again. So for nfs we get the mount error only with the system menu
places submenu but not with the "computer browser" (nautilus) or open dialog.
This however is NOT true for the encrypted filesystem (number 1, above). In
that case you get the mount error in all the scenarios.

3) Finally, one could have quite a number of transient filesystems in
/etc/fstab and only a few to be active at a time. It is not a sane default to
put all these fstab entries in the places menu, as it really clutters both
nautilus and the open file dialog with mostly not used entries. Instead it
should only show already mounted filesystems, OR it should be possible for the
user to hide some entries.
For example we could have a bogus mount option in fstab like "gui_ignore" or
something like that.

PS : if there is any way to control at least the hiding of the
problematic entries that would be very useful, but i could not find any
docs about how gvfs/nautilus choses what filesystems to show in places
and what filesystems not to show.

Thank you.

I encounter the same situation.
The scenario :
Use "connect to server" to connect to a windows share, enter user & password;
Use the icon created on the desktop to browse the newly connected share. I get
"Unable to mount location , failed to mount windows share".
HOWEVER, and here comes the interesting part :
I can open a terminal window and
cd ~/.gvfs
There you will find your perfectly mounted share, you can enter it, ls and cd
in it and so on.
So, it seems that the mount is actually done but somehow the GUI thinks the
mount failed...

[Bug 44811] Re: File type / Open with annoyance

2007-06-24 Thread Blue
I do not think there will ever be a way to include in the distribution
any possible mimetype. In these condition, there must be a way for the
enduser to control how his files are opened based for example only on
the extension (or anything that works for any generic file).

At this moment, it is impossible (using only the standard desktop environment)
to assign DXF files to be opened with the appropriate application. This is
because nautilus tries to outsmart the user in identified almost any non binary
file as a pure text file and assign it to be opened with the default texteditor.
Trying to change this behaviour by right clicking such a file (a dxf file for
example) and assigning another application to handle the file will actually
assign any textfile to be opened with the second application, which again is
wrong.

As long as the user does not have a way to change the behaviour for third party
documents/files this is still a bug. (Would you otherwise prefer us to open a
bug for ubuntu saying that "ubuntu does not include any possible mimetype on
earth" ? )
It's not right to always try to outsmart the user about what he (the user)
wants. A lot of us have bad memories about a certain operating system doing
exactly that.

Thank you.

[Bug 44828] Re: Evolution looses some mails on the way from the inbox to the screen

2007-04-04 Thread Blue
If there is confidential data in the log file, try to find&replace the sensible
strings (emails,servers... ) with something else.
Obviously there is no easy way to tell what could be relevant and what not in
the context of this bug. Maybe a developer can help here.

Christoffer, could you make the test that Daniel proposed ? (The
previous post). After I encountered the problem I switched to imap and
it would be quite hard for me to switch back to pop3 and reproduce the
problem with CAMEL_DEBUG=all.

[Bug 55154] Re: When using very small fonts, Nautilus shows bad sized textboxes

2006-12-14 Thread Blue
The problem still exists and I did not test in Edgy.
However, maybe the following factors are of relevance :
I use a high resolution (1400x1050); The dpi is custom set to 96 dpi (this is
not the default).
Maybe you can test this on similar conditions (high res, modified dpi , very
small font - ms arial 8 ).

[Bug 55227] totem crashes with iso-8859-2 subtitles

2006-08-04 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

1. Distro Ubuntu Dapper 6.06
(totem-xine 1.4.3-0ubuntu1)
Steps :
- edit ~/.gnome2/totem_config
- set subtitles.separate.src_encoding:iso-8859-2
- Play a movie with this encoding in the subtitles.
- Totem crashes.
Interesting is the fact that setting latin2 instead of iso-8859-2 works fine.

I can confirm this bug. It happens with totem AND mplayer, but it's a

had this with xfree. The problem is that xorg is not smart enough to
allocate memory required for xv framebuffers.

[Bug 49444] Erroneous display of "From" field

2006-06-12 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

The "From" line/string presented by evolution has some characters missing and
some twisted.
For example , the original string in the message source is :

From: asf.ro PostMaster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

However, evolution displays it as :

From: asf.roP

This happens always in evolutions for the error messages sent by mailservers.
Other email clients work fine;
The string is correct in the message source shown by evolution with CTRL-U but
it is not correct when displayed on the screen.
See the following attachments with a screenshot of the message as displayed by
evolution and with the source for that message as shown by evolution.

[Bug 44828] Re: Evolution looses some mails on the way from the inbox to the screen

2006-05-22 Thread Blue
The mail are on the disk in that directory. In my screenshots you can see :
1. Evolution shows only one mail in the "WEBDAV" - the initial mail in the
thread that also has some replies.
2. I viewed the mbox file with mcview and i focused exactly on one of the
replies in that thread, so it can be seen that the mail exists but evolution
does not display it. It could be a charset problem, but I'm not sure. Please
tell me if you need other details.

Thank you.

[Bug 44985] Evolution looses some mails on the way from the inbox to the screen

2006-05-16 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

First I think that I initially reported this bug to the wrong place
( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/44828 )

Now the bug :
Binary package hint: evolution

After upgrading from breezy to dapper, and after a week or to with dapper
evolution started to forget about some mails that ARE received. For example, in
some folders the mail arrives from the pop3 server (the mail can be checked for
example in
/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.sbd/subfloder.sbd/FOLDER but however are not
displayed on the screen.
It is not an isolated problem, now only a few percent of the new emails are
actually displayed.
Deleting summary/index files (forcing evolution to recreate them) does not help.
I have to mention that there are a lot of mails stored in evolution, and the
sheer total number of emails could be the problem (or a catalyst ) for this.
However I do not think the number of emails is the only reason, because first a
few new emails still get displayed and second this behaviour seems to have
started after an upgrade that also updated evolution.
In order to prove this situation I can provide a few screenshots, and by
request the files corresponding to a folder that is not displayed properly.

For other details and screenshots please visit the URL above.
I also kindly ask an administrator to move the previous bug here if it is the
case.

[Bug 44811] File type / Open with annoyance

2006-05-15 Thread Blue
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

Distro : Dapper (breezy does the same, too).
Given an arbitrary text based document it is not possible to assign an
application to open the file with based only on the document file extension.
Simple example : DXF files. Theese files are text based. However, DXF should be
opened with qcad if it is installed, not with an editor.Trying to manually
assign qcad to this type of file associates qcad with any plain text file. This
happens because if gnome recognizes a file based on its content, it absolutely
ignores the extension of the file. This would not be a problem on various
binary files where there is no confusion risk (zip, mp3, avi, etc). However the
actual trend is to use human readable files for documents (xml based for
example) and this creates more and more problems as users can't assign which
application should be used to open a certain type of document.
