[Bug 216302] Re: gdm crash at first log in

2008-05-18 Thread Brian Pitts
I experience a similar crash with intel video hardware.

The following has happened for me on two systems, a Dell GX100 and a
compaq of similar age.

1) Install using the alternate installer preseeded to pull in the
following additional packages: ubuntu-restricted-extras edubuntu-desktop
edubuntu-addon-kde edubuntu-addon-science edubuntu-addon-young scribus
blender inkscape audacity dia-gnome kompozer stellarium avidemux freecol
freeciv-client-gtk freemind thunderbird thunderbird-gnome-support
openssh-server

2) Log in with the user created during the installation, and add two
mroe users through the Users and Groups tool

3) Start the Login Window manager and click the security tab.

4) The graphical desktop disappears.

5) I manually restart gdm.

6) Whenever I try to login, gdm crashed and restarts.

The messages repeated in dmesg are

May 18 23:48:01 ubuntu kernel: [ 2670.037487] ^Idriver to use
reclaim_buffers_idlelocked() instead.

After rebooting, logging in works. I haven't seen the crash again, but I
haven't used either computer for more than 15 minutes. I will attach
files from the Compaq.

[Bug 178274] Re: [hardy] firefox breaks on some pages with an X error

2008-03-14 Thread Brian Pitts
I'm running 64-bit Hardy up to date as of 3/14 on an Inspiron 1420. I
have nspluginwrapper and flash installed; compiz is disabled.

I run "firefox -safe-mode" then visit http://www.howtoforge.com. As the
page renders, the error below is printed

(npviewer.bin:10895): Gtk-WARNING **:
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/libmurrine.so: wrong ELF class:
ELFCLASS64

This error is not fatal, it always occurs when I visit a page that
includes flash. Almost immediately afterwards, the error below is
printed and firefox crashes.

The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

[Bug 205361] [NEW] World Clock uses own dialog for adjusting the data and time instead of time-admin

2008-03-22 Thread Brian Pitts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The new world clock in Hardy has its own dialog for setting the system
data and time, accessible by right clicking it and selecting "adjust
data and time". Pre-Hardy, clicking this launched time-admin. TIme-admin
has greater functionality than the dialog implemented by clock; it
support policykit and ntp. Time-admin is still accessible in Hardy from
System -> Administration -> Time and Date. See
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5374/ for how this confuses users.

[Bug 172307] Re: Last.fm radio stations play one click too late

2008-02-09 Thread Brian Pitts
I have a similar problem.

1) Open rhythmbox.
2) Create a station for artist X.
3) Close Rhythmbox and open another last.fm client, such as last-exit.
4) In last-exit, play a station for artist Y.
5) Close last-exit then open rhythmbox.
6) Select the station for artists X from step 2, and click play.

What plays is a station for artist Y, which isn't even defined in
rhythmbox!

[Bug 26662] Re: file-roller fails to open .Z files

2008-04-19 Thread Brian Pitts
Could we remove the connection to gnome-bug-#126130? The problem isn't
that file-roller misidentifies the file, the problem is that it checks
for both compress and uncompress, when Ubuntu only includes uncompress
by default.

** Description changed:

- I have a tarball named dpm4.tar.Z and file-roller fails to
- recognize that it is a compressed file, outputting the
- message "Archive type not supported". If I rename the file
- as dpm4.tar.gz, it works.

[Bug 205919] Re: Brasero and nautilus-cd-burner cannot burn 4GiB file to DVD

2008-07-06 Thread Brian Pitts
BraseroGrowisofs stdout: Executing 'genisoimage -r -J -iso-level 3 -udf
-input-charset utf8 -graft-points -D -path-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_9HOO9T
-exclude-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_1UMQ9T -print-size | builtin_dd of=/dev/scd0
obs=32k seek=0'
BraseroGrowisofs stderr: -allow-limited-size was not specified. There is no way
do represent this file size. Aborting.

Brasero is using UDF, but genisoimage can't create an image that is only
udf. The solution to this bug is in the log; Brasero needs to use the
-allow-limited-size option of genisoimage when there are files greater
than 2GiB. This is what K3B does.

>From the man page:

-allow-limited-size
When processing files larger than 2GiB which cannot be easily
represented in ISO9660, add them with a shrunk visible file size
to ISO9660 and with the correct visible file size to the UDF
system. The result is an inconsistent filesystem and users need
to make sure that they really use UDF rather than ISO9660 driver
to read a such disk. Implies enabling -udf.

-udf Include UDF filesystem support in the generated filesystem
image. UDF support is currently in alpha status and for this
reason, it is not possible to create UDF-only images. UDF data
structures are currently coupled to the Joliet structures, so
there are many pitfalls with the current implementation. There
is no UID/GID support, there is no POSIX permission support,
there is no support for symlinks. Note that UDF wastes the
space from sector ~20 to sector 256 at the beginning of the disc
in addition to the space needed for real UDF data structures.

[Bug 160329] Rotate should be in the "View" menu, not "Edit"

2007-11-05 Thread Brian Pitts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince's "rotate left" and "rotate right" commands most appropriately
belong under the "View" menu, since they only affect the display of the

[Bug 56436] Re: Doesn't show up in gnome-screensaver list

2006-12-01 Thread Brian Pitts
The fix did not make it into Edgy. You have to

mv
/usr/share/gnome-screensaver/themes/electricsheep.desktop
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/electricsheep.desktop

Also, to fix bug #2379 you must edit
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/electricsheep.desktop

Change the line:

Exec=electricsheep --root 1

to

Exec=electricsheep --root 1 --zoom 1

After all this it likely still won't work due to bug #5823. At a
terminal you can fix 5823 by substituting --root 1 with --mplayer 1, but
this doesn't work in the .desktop file.

I experience a similar crash with intel video hardware.

The following has happened for me on two systems, a Dell GX100 and a

1) Install using the alternate installer preseeded to pull in the
following additional packages: ubuntu-restricted-extras edubuntu-desktop

2) Log in with the user created during the installation, and add two
mroe users through the Users and Groups tool

3) Start the Login Window manager and click the security tab.

4) The graphical desktop disappears.

5) I manually restart gdm.

6) Whenever I try to login, gdm crashed and restarts.

The messages repeated in dmesg are

[Bug 178274] Re: [hardy] firefox breaks on some pages with an X error

2008-03-14 Thread Brian Pitts
I'm running 64-bit Hardy up to date as of 3/14 on an Inspiron 1420. I
have nspluginwrapper and flash installed; compiz is disabled.

I run "firefox -safe-mode" then visit http://www.howtoforge.com. As the
page renders, the error below is printed

(npviewer.bin:10895): Gtk-WARNING **:

This error is not fatal, it always occurs when I visit a page that
includes flash. Almost immediately afterwards, the error below is
printed and firefox crashes.

The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

[Bug 205361] [NEW] World Clock uses own dialog for adjusting the data and time instead of time-admin

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The new world clock in Hardy has its own dialog for setting the system
data and time, accessible by right clicking it and selecting "adjust
data and time". Pre-Hardy, clicking this launched time-admin. TIme-admin
has greater functionality than the dialog implemented by clock; it
support policykit and ntp. Time-admin is still accessible in Hardy from

[Bug 205919] Re: Brasero and nautilus-cd-burner cannot burn 4GiB file to DVD

2008-07-06 Thread Brian Pitts
BraseroGrowisofs stdout: Executing 'genisoimage -r -J -iso-level 3 -udf
-input-charset utf8 -graft-points -D -path-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_9HOO9T
-exclude-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_1UMQ9T -print-size | builtin_dd of=/dev/scd0
obs=32k seek=0'

-
- http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166603:
+ When opening a file with the extension .z file-roller checks for the
+ presence of the compress and uncompress binaries. A normal Ubuntu
+ includes uncompress via gzip, but not compress. When file-roller can't

What plays is a station for artist Y, which isn't even defined in
rhythmbox!

[Bug 56436] Re: Doesn't show up in gnome-screensaver list

2006-12-01 Thread Brian Pitts
The fix did not make it into Edgy. You have to

mv
/usr/share/gnome-screensaver/themes/electricsheep.desktop
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/electricsheep.desktop

Also, to fix bug #2379 you must edit
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/electricsheep.desktop

Change the line:

Exec=electricsheep --root 1

to

Exec=electricsheep --root 1 --zoom 1

After all this it likely still won't work due to bug #5823. At a
terminal you can fix 5823 by substituting --root 1 with --mplayer 1, but
this doesn't work in the .desktop file.

[Bug 205919] Re: Brasero and nautilus-cd-burner cannot burn 4GiB file to DVD

2008-07-06 Thread Brian Pitts
BraseroGrowisofs stdout: Executing 'genisoimage -r -J -iso-level 3 -udf
-input-charset utf8 -graft-points -D -path-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_9HOO9T
-exclude-list /tmp/brasero_tmp_1UMQ9T -print-size | builtin_dd of=/dev/scd0
obs=32k seek=0'
