[Bug 285998] Re: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/
An example of the gross failure of this is rmdir ~/Videos . XDG tools will then notice the dir not missing, and change the definition to $HOME/ . Thereafter, media scanner will treat home as the Videos dir, and spend days of CPU scanning ~/sourcecode/projectsfoo/tests/10TB-of-video- files/* . xdg-user-dirs should be an expression of the user's preferences, not an assertion of what was valid on the disk at some point in the past. It does not matter whether the named variable's target existed on disk the last time it looked. Existence of the target is a function of time, the user's whims, and language. Apps using a XDG name at the user's request should handle the nonexistence by prompting the user to confirm intent, or merely create what it was asked to use. Redefining the variable without any ability to discover or undo it is evil. Lying about the user's preference is wrong. Assuming apps can never mkdir() what they are asked to use is wrong. In the mean time, apps should probably interpret XDG variables that are $HOME/ (with significan trailing slash) as previously clobbered from this bug, invalid, and then prompt the user to re-set it to default or pick a location. If users pick their home, do not include the trailing slash in the value, and set it to $HOME instead. The trailing slash is a good semaphore because any app is already expecting the returned value not to end in a slash. Most values from the XDG tool are like /home/alice/Music, no trailing slash, so they append slash and the rest of their relative filename. ** Also affects: mediascanner2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: mediascanner2 Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to xdg-user-dirs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/285998 Title: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/ To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mediascanner2/+bug/285998/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 285998] Re: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/
** Description changed: - Tested in Hardy and Intrepid + $ rmdir ~/Videos + ... + $ mkdir ~/Videos - 1) - Delete ~/Templates - Rebooting - Change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs to remove the Templates folder as a link for the shortcut (RightClick Create Document Template) - 2) - Creating ~/Templates - Rebooting - There is no change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs even when ~/Templates it present at login, therefore the Template shortcut no longer works + Hours later, find apps doing crazy things in home directory. - Is this intentional or a bug? + During the elided period between rmdir and mkdir, if the XDG functions + were run, the user's intent is forever lost, and its value is set to the + user's home directory. + + Apps can not rely on XDG functions not to lie about what the user wants. It prefers to say what exists, not now when the app is accessing it, but when the XDG functions ran. It does not provide a file descriptor for an + open_at(2) call. It provides a stale, text name of what used to exist on disk, and often not even what the user wanted. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to xdg-user-dirs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/285998 Title: mv or rm of any XDG user dir causes its definition to change to wrong, oversimple $HOME/ To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mediascanner2/+bug/285998/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: evolution-data-server signals overwhelm dbus server. It's probably the Gnome date-time applet asking for updates. As a result, e-d-s dumps almost a thousand signals onto dbus, three times, as fast as it can for about a minute. dbus server consumes all CPU. Noted in upstream bugzilla: For me, it happens with: Classic, Blue, Clean, Simple. Not with Ubuntu. It happens with AIM contacts, Google Talk, Yahoo, and Zeroconf. It seems as though the text container tries to expand to fit a miscalculation of minimum line width necessary to display some text. [Bug 486617] Re: GThumb import fails if any files in camera are movies
A work-around is to not have any unsupported file formats in the camera. If you have movies, for instance, you will hit this bug. It's fixed in upstream with a simple patch that clears error flags that failing to produce a thumbnail sets. That patch is already applied to gthumb trunk. If someone will make sure that it's safe to unset the error flag (for instance, is it possible to have an error earlier, for which we should not unset it if there is *another* error we want to ignore), then I think it should be safe for a Ubuntu-package patch. Since having movies on cameras is almost the default case these days, this deserves some attention and a High or Critical severity. -- GThumb import fails if any files in camera are movies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486617 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gthumb in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 211360] [NEW] workspace switcher tooltip is too intrusive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-applets I click to change workspaces, and I start to type in the newly-visible window, and because my mouse pointer is still in the workspace, a useless tooltip appears and obscures what I'm working on. It's far too intrusive. If I hadn't just clicked there, I might want to know some of that information, but the image of arrows, the full title of a window, a horizontal rule -- most of that is wasteful. The tooltip is - too big - too gaudy - not very useful - eager to appear - in my way. ** Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- workspace switcher tooltip is too intrusive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211360 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 110147] Re: [apport] gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV
Hi Seb. IIRC, I think the bug is really in the dbus library, in that it claims to create an 'error', but instead returns an exceptional value and yet doesn't set error to point to something other than NULL. So, there's probably a bug in dbus. This patch makes gnome-settings-daemon check that 'error' is actually set to something before trying to use it. It's purely a defensive measure against dbus doing something unexpected. If it happens, we should perhaps make a loud noise also, but we should never crash because of it. -- [apport] gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110147 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 106537] rhythmbox crashes in disc IO
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox ver 0.9.6-0ubuntu4 The computer was idle, except for Rhythmbox playing. I had plugins enabled, +last.fm profile, +iPod support, +Lyrics. Only last.fm was in use. I have a 95%/5% mix of Ogg/Vorbis and MP3. I don't know what song was playing at the time. The morning backup in the mean-time clobbered all my filesystem's atimes.
