[Bug 979326] Re: [soudnua]: No Input Level is detected for all my microphones

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Jones
This seems to be similar to what I have found after upgrading to
precise. When I plug in a webcam with micorphone via usb, that works
(but I need the rear microphone jack working as the webcam is only
borrowed to test the point.)

See attached screenshot. The rear microphone jack is detected. There is
a tested working mcirophone attached, but there is no input being
detected. I have Intel i7 2600 motherboard with built in sound card
device. Have 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 installed and up to date. See below for
lspci listing of audio device (bottom).

Mode of sound hardware is set to Analogue Stereo Duplex in the Output
tab of the sound settings. Was working before upgrade from 11:10.

Result of aplay -l command is

[Bug 832603] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_simple_async_result_complete()

2011-09-27 Thread Chris Jones
Because of a problem with fglrx I have had to reinstall from scratch. I
found that I could not reinstall from Ubuntu beta 2 or daily builds and
have had to reinstall natty then upgrade. (if it might give any clue to
the current bug the oneric install could not start the screen with or
without fglrx installed) I have therefore just installed all latest
updates/upgrades at 11:22hrs BST 27-9-2011 and

AMD Radeon 6450, Intel 64 bit processor (E6750), iiyama Prolite E2473HDS
monitor (1920x1080). Would also like to be using my second monitor Sony
SDM-X75F/K (1280x1024) but having difficulty.

Thanks, as always

Chris

[Bug 675067] Re: Wallpaper goes black when changed

2011-07-08 Thread Chris Jones
I had the issue with 10.10 Maverick right up until I upgraded to 11.04
Natty. Now it seems to have been fixed in Natty.

You should probably close the bug report unless anyone else is having
this issue with Natty.

[Bug 675070] [NEW] Nautilus can't access SMB mount first time

2010-11-13 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I access my BSD file server at home via SMB, it mounts in Nautilus.
The very first time it is mounted it works as it should. But once I
leave for anything above 5 minutes or so, when I click on the already
mounted link I get an error message. When I rid the error message off
screen and try again, it works. But not every time, sometimes it can
take about 2-3 attempts before it finally connects and displays my file
server data.

I have tried this in KDE with Dolphin and have no problems. Also,
Nautilus in Fedora has no problems either. It seems to be limited to
Nautilus on Ubuntu.

[Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-10-14 Thread Chris Jones
For the various upstream terminal projects following along - it seems
like a wise idea to specifically set TERM to xterm in your terminal
code. GNOME Terminal does this (see terminal-screen.c around like 1386),
and as a result of our early Maverick testing, Terminator 0.95 also
follows this behaviour now. I'm not going to go as far as changing the
Invalid statuses though :)

[Bug 562883] [NEW] Unable to send to remote sftp share

2010-04-14 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-sendto

I'm trying to use nautilus-sendto to send some files from Rhythmbox to a
remote SFTP share, but it dies silently when I do so.

The SFTP share is mounted via a bookmark to sftp://server/home/user/ but
it seems like sendto is unable to select remote paths, so it's just
going to be trying to write it to / on the server, which will obviously
fail. This UI should use something more like the gnome file saving
dialog so bookmarks can be selected and paths chosen.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 562887] [NEW] Unable to create a new archive

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Steps to reproduce:

* Launch file-roller
* Create a new archive on your desktop as a .zip
* Drag some files in (I dragged from Rhythmbox)

I'm pretty much entirely certain that Terminator is not responsible for
how the window manager draws the window borders and I'm not really
convinced VTE is at fault either - I'd blame xcompmgr and/or your window
manager.

[Bug 531852] [NEW] contact tooltips cover context menu

2010-03-04 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Steps to reproduce:

 * Open Empathy
 * Right click on a contact
 * without dismissing the context menu, move your mouse cursor over any contact

What happens:

 * tooltip for the contact your mouse cursor is over appears and will
render on top of the context menu

What (I suggest) should happen:

 * tooltip should not appear if there is a context menu visible.

[Bug 444609] [NEW] Incorrect xrandr error notification when changing monitor setup

2009-10-06 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have a laptop (Thinkpad X301) which I connect to an external monitor
in some locations, and poke Fn-F7 on it to make it notice the new
display configuration. It has an Intel X4500MHD graphics chip, and two
external display connectors - VGA and DisplayPort.

With either VGA or DisplayPort, the Fn-F7 action triggers exactly correct setup
for the displays, it will extend my desktop onto the second monitor with the
correct resolution and frequency.
This is, obviously, fantastic.

For some reason it then displays an error notification saying could not
set the configuration for CRTC 58 (or 57 in the case of VGA).

[Bug 436927] [NEW] reduce the fade time

2009-09-25 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

GNOME Screensaver hard codes the time for an explicit activation at 1 second
(#define FADE_TIMEOUT 1000).
When suspending this fade seems to be synchronous and (at least on my laptop)
seems to be the longest single part of the suspend process.

I think this could be sped up significantly (say, 200-500ms) and
possibly even done asynchronously (although that presents the odd
possibility that the fade might not be complete by the time the machine
actually suspends, which would be ugly at best).

(FWIW I tried a quick change of the FADE_TIMOUT define to 200 and
instead of fading the screen just went immediately blank, possibly
because the calculations about the number of steps/frames no longer made
sense).

[Bug 404398] [NEW] unable to disable touchpad

2009-07-24 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome-control-center bug.

When I installed karmic a few weeks ago I disabled the touchpad on my
Thinkpad using gnome-mouse-properties (instead I use the Trackpoint
nipple thing).

I just rebooted for the first time in a week or so and now the tickbox
to disable the touchpad has no effect. I've checked that it's not a
kernel regression from 2.6.31-3 to -4.

I saw this on an X300 too, but I can't reproduce it with Karmic on an

think it's because the touchpad and trackpoint appear as a single XInput

[Bug 399320] [NEW] [karmic] PTP devices not auto-unmounting on USB disconnect

2009-07-14 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I have an iPhone 3G which I connect via USB to charge:

Bus 001 Device 009: ID 05ac:1292 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3G

The device presents a PTP interface, so each time I connect it I get prompted
to open F-Spot with buttons for OK, Cancel and Unmount.
If I choose Cancel the device is mounted with the name iPhone, which is
presumably correct behaviour, but when I disconnect the USB cable an entry
remains in the Places menu (although underneath the Network entry, not
underneath the Computer entry where the iPhone entry is created) named:

Digital Camera (usb:000,007)

This happens each time I disconnect the device, so over the course of a
day I build up quite a few bogus entries.

Presumably the gvfs mount should be completely removed on USB
disconnect?

[Bug 243596] Re: gnome-terminal scrollback leak

2009-06-30 Thread Chris Jones
fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. The size of the heap is the
responsibility of glibc to manage and it appears (from what I've quickly turned
up with google) to not aggressively shrink heap sizes.
To show a memory leak you would need to run multiple iterations of the test in
tabs of the same gnome-terminal process and show that memory usage increases
each time. if you can run multiple iterations and the overall size remains
roughly constant then it is not a leak (to the best of my understanding of
these things, which is admitedly minimal).

[Bug 338158] [NEW] g-k-d hangs, consumes CPU then segfaults

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Machine upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty

I have a keyring that should be unlocked at login. Attempting to use it
(e.g. for ssh) causes me to be prompted for the keyring password, then
the key password. It then provides authentication for a few ssh
sessions, but after a while hits 100% CPU. Trying to use it after that
causes it to segfault.

[Bug 291847] Re: xdg-open mangles mailto: urls to ///f...@bar.com

2009-02-11 Thread Chris Jones
xdg-open is a very simple shell script which appears to do nothing to
modify the URL parameter before passing it to the chosen desktop handler
(so gnome-open for Ubuntu). Indeed, running:

gnome-open mailto:c...@tenshu.net

will produce the same prefixed ///

(xdg-email also calls gnome-open)

gnome-open is even shorter than xdg-open, albeit in C. It appears to be
doing the canonicalisation with calls to GIO.

It seems as though passing a mailto: URI to a GIO function that creates a GFile
(e.g. g_file_new_for_commandline_arg() which gnome-open uses) may be slightly
destructive, to quote GIO's ChangeLog.
On the (admittedly somewhat arbitrary and potentially spurious) basis that
something called GFile has no business dealing with things that aren't files,
I've attached a naive patch to make gnome-open not feed mailto URIs through
GFile.

(if this is not to be fixed in gnome-open, but GFile then this bug
should be moved to glib2 rather than libgnome. I've invalidated the xdg-

than gnome-open)

[Bug 274461] Re: gnome-system-monitor window is semi-transparent when using compiz

2008-10-24 Thread Chris Jones
Chris: The reason this is being claimed as a bug is because gnome-
system-monitor is the only app in the desktop which is making its
background transparent (I'll disregard GNOME Terminal because terminals
are strange hairy beasties that many users won't care about).

gnome-system-monitor looks out of place in the context of the rest of
the desktop, so people assume something is wrong.

It's not a bug because upstream intended to do this. It's not a feature
because it doesn't really add anything other than confusion.

In an ideal world I think we would change the app to look like all the
others, but right now it falls inbetween the cracks of bug and
feature.

[Bug 287476] [NEW] Links to gvfs mounts do not use a URI

2008-10-22 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Links to gvfs mounts point to ~/.gvfs/ rather than a URI. Opening the
links without previously mounting the remote server produces an error
message that the link is broken, and offers to move it to Trash.

Steps to reproduce:

 * Places-Connect to a remote server (I use SFTP)
 * drag a file to your desktop while holding Alt
 * Select Link Here
 * Unmount the remote server (or reboot, etc)
 * Double click on the link

Presumably this could be entirely avoided by having the link point to
the URI equivalent of the ~/.gvfs/ path?

Confirming and re-assigning to libvisual-plugins because that seems to

[Bug 283909] [NEW] [Intrepid] totem does not prompt for authentication on network locations

2008-10-15 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

We have an icecast server which is used for private streams and so
requires HTTP authentication.

In hardy, totem would happily prompt for the information and store it in
gnome-keyring.

In intrepid, it does not seem to be able to do this. If the
username/password are encoded in the URL (i.e.
http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:1234/stream.m3u) it works fine, so this seems to
just relate to the part which asks the user for the authentication.
