the tablet works now!

[Bug 1923459] Re: evince doesn't show filename or PDF title on the title bar

2021-11-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is reported at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/1583
(thanks to Michaël Berteaux @Mikenux at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/996).

The bug is solved in Evince 40.2, and it looks like Ubuntu 21.10 has
Evince 40.4-2, which would include the fix.

However, this is worth backporting, please: it's really a weird nuisance
for one of the core applications on a desktop computer.

[Bug 1917103] Re: Accessibility: Zoom: Mouse pointer leaves square trails as it moves across the screen

2021-02-26 Thread Christopher Patti
I took video showing the bug being reproduced on 21.04. Unfortunately
it's not the best. The video in the bug I linked above is clearer.

https://youtu.be/dSPUFTfpzZc

** Description changed:

  Steps to Reproduce:

In the Settings applet choose Accessibility -> Zoom. Toggle the switch
on. This happens whether or not you actually magnify the screen.

When the mouse is moved anywhere on the screen, it leaves behind
repeated partial square trails in its path.

2021-02-26 Thread Christopher Patti
Public bug reported:

Steps to Reproduce:

In the Settings applet choose Accessibility -> Zoom. Toggle the switch
on. This happens whether or not you actually magnify the screen.

When the mouse is moved anywhere on the screen, it leaves behind
repeated partial square trails in its path.

2020-10-25 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem is unaddressed on two computers after upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10.
Now I can using the GUI set up a custom keyboard shortcut associated witth the
"search" key, but it still does nothing. Pressing the "search" key just gives
me the desktop search.

[Bug 1861025] Re: Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-09-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem is no better on 20.04.

-> In the Keyboard Shortcuts dialogue, no function is assigned to the
"Search" key.
-> There is a custom keyboard shortcut assigned to Ctrl-Search. It works
fine.
-> When I try to set a custom shortcut to the Search key, instead, the desktop
pops into zoomed-out-view-all-my-windows view whenever I press the Search key,
even though I have clicked "Set Shortcut" and the key should be trapped

-> Moreover, even if I set the key with the command

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys.custom-
keybinding:/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/media-keys/custom-
keybindings/custom8/ binding 'Search'

It now shows up correctly in the dialogue listing shortcuts, but the
action of the key is unchanged: it still just displays the Super-key
overview view rather than carrying out my custom shortcut function

The "Search" key corresponds to pressing the F10 key, without the Fn
modifier, on this Lenovo T450s, running 20.04.

Please help me disable this behaviour that seems hard-wired to this key!
This is a regression since 19.10, as mentioned before.

[Bug 1841646] Re: White text on white background for HTML e-mail

2020-04-09 Thread Christopher Howard
I've tested version 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 and all looks to be working
properly.

I removed the preference file that prevented libwebkit2gtk from
upgrading and then upgraded it. Then upgraded evolution from the bionic-
proposed repository.

All emails that were displaying white text on a white background are no
longer doing that. Text is now black. I've seen no other problems with
evolution so far.

[Bug 1825710] Re: Remove "Application is ready" notification

2020-03-10 Thread Christopher Townsend
I'll add that since updating from 18.04 to 20.04, Pidgin has been doing
this very consistently. Whenever I have Pidgin focused and then switch
focus to another window, some time later, I get a notification saying:

Pidgin Internet Messenger
"#foo" is ready

where #foo is the name of the last chat tab I had focused with Pidgin.
This "new" behavior is atrocious. I'm not sure what changed in Pidgin
and/or Gnome, but this is a terrible user experience.

Also, this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861006.

[Bug 1866277] [NEW] Power Saving settings "Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power" does not work as advertised

2020-03-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

In Settings -> Power under the "Power Saving" section, there are the
following two on/off slider options:

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth can be turned off to save power.

Rather than controlling something to do with power-saving, eg. when battery is
low or the system is inactive, these appear to immediately turn off wifi, and
bluetooth, respectively, when the machine is a laptop and is unplugged.

Instead, they should control something more useful, or be relabeled.

[Bug 1861025] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut "Search" shows as disabled, yet it still works, and custom shortcut unable to use the Search key

2020-01-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Prior to the last upgrade (19.10), I used the Search key for one of my custom
keyboard shortcuts.
(I am using a Lenovo T450s, so the Search key is the button which works as F10
when the Fn key is also pressed.)

In 19.10, this is no longer possible. The Search key is initially set up
with the Search function, ie opens a magnifying glass text entry box to
look for things. If I disable that function in the Keyboard dialogue,
it still works!

And therefore I cannot use the key as I wish.

[Bug 1841646] Re: White text on white background for HTML e-mail

2020-01-09 Thread Christopher Howard
Ubuntu Budgie users (like me) can't use that fix as apt is saying it
will remove ubuntu-budgie-desktop. That will make a big mess.

I find it disconcerting that this was reported over 4 months ago, was
confirmed to be a real bug over 2 months ago, and there has been zero
response in terms of a fix. Surely this won't take but a few minutes of
someone's time to fix.

[Bug 1851134] [NEW] setting custom keyboard shortcut fails for certain keys

2019-11-03 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I click on settings in menu or press my settings icon key (above F9 key on
Lenovo T450s keyboard). Navigate to "Keyboard Shortcuts". Scroll to bottom to
press "+" to add a custom shortcut. Define function, then click on "Set
Shortcut...". Then I press the "Explorer" key, which is above the F12 on my
keyboard. Instead of setting the shortcut, it brings up a file browser.
I can set my shortcut to shift-Explorer, but not to Explorer. This is even
though no other keyboard shortcut listed is set to this key "Explorer". The
"Home folder" Launcher is set to "Disabled".
Changing the "Home folder" launcher keyboard shortcut to something else does
not help.

Instead, once I click on "set Shortcut", it should listen to whatever I
choose.

The same problem exists for the "Search" key.

[Bug 1838132] Re: file browser hangs system for several seconds on save/load/exit

2019-08-15 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Un-locking the screen/desktop now also takes much longer than it used
to. After correctly entering the password or scanning a fingerprint,
nothing happens for a long time, and then eventually the screen is
unlocked. Could that be related?

[Bug 1838132] Re: file browser hangs system for several seconds on save/load/exit

2019-08-08 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Sorry, I suspect it's specific to whatever part of the OS supplies dialogues to
save files, but I'm not sophisticated enough to know what that means.
Here's the journal:

[Bug 1838132] [NEW] file browser hangs system for several seconds on save/load/exit

2019-07-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

For the last month, saving a file or printing a file from my browser or
any other application, or even trying to quit the file browser without
doing anything, causes the file dialog and the entire system to hang
(become unresponsive) for several seconds.

This time I turned off the displayed, unplugged it, then left it
unplugged while I rebooted. After rebooting and logging in, I turned on
the display and plugged it in. Attached is the dmesg from this boot.

2019-06-03 Thread Christopher Nelson
I did plug/unplug the monitor because if I do that enough times is
generally resolves the problem until the next time I reboot. It has not
done so this time. I also tried a new cable, but that does not fix the
problem either.

[Bug 1830792] Re: [i915] Rotated display is overscaled and overdrawn

2019-05-30 Thread Christopher Nelson
It seems unlikely to be a cable or signal problem since I can eventually
coax it into working, and it continues working until I reboot. If it
were a cable problem or something about the signal I would have to
physically modify the connection to create and/or correct the problem.
Since the mere act of rebooting creates the problem it is much more
likely to be a kernel or driver bug.

[Bug 1830792] [NEW] Ubuntu display is corrupted, never recovers

2019-05-28 Thread Christopher Nelson
Public bug reported:

On my system I have two display: one in landscape, and one in portrait.
The landscape display is fine, but the portrait display is corrupted. If
I unplug the display from the computer for some time and then plug it
back in it will occasionally fix the problem.

Once the problem is fixed, the display works perfectly fine,
indefinitely. However, as soon as I reboot the computer the display will
come up corrupted again and never recovers without many rounds of
plug/unplug turn off/turn on. It's extremely frustrating.

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2019-04-18 Thread Christopher Nelson
To reproduce it, try switching the order of your displays. For example,
make the display on port 0 be on the right of the display on port 1
(instead of the "natural" order of 0=left, 1=right.) I also notice that
changing the orientation of the primary display to "portrait right"
causes problems, whereas landscape or portrait left don't.

[Bug 1825004] [NEW] Ubuntu loses display settings on reboot, corrupts displays

2019-04-16 Thread Christopher Nelson
Public bug reported:

I have two displays, one on display port, and one on VGA. The display
port display is a Seiki Pro 40" display in landscape at 3840x2160. The
VGA is an HP 24" display in portrait at 1920x1200.

If I boot with either display by itself, everything works fine. If I
plug in the other display and configure it to run multidisplay,
everything is fine.

When I reboot, the display settings are changed from "Join Displays" to
"Mirror", the 40" is set to 1920x1200 landscape (which it cannot
actually do), and the 24" is set to 1920x1200 landscape. The 24" is also
set to primary (whereas I selected the 40" as primary before rebooting.)

The 40" display is messed up with overdraw, etc. In addition, I can no
longer select 3840x2160 for the 40". If I turn of the 40" and turn it on
again, eventually the settings box will let me select 3840x2160. Once I
select it, the screen flashes but does not come back to 3840x2160. (ie.,
it is still corrupted with overdraw and presumably running at
1920x1200.). If I toggle the display power several times, it will
eventually come back running at the correct resolution.

[Bug 1726538] Re: Dual monitor configuration not saved across logout / login

2019-04-16 Thread Christopher Nelson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1292398 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292398

I can confirm that it's not fixed. Rebooting has become a major problem
for me because it loses my display settings, corrupts the displays, and
I spend 20 minutes fixing everything.

[Bug 1767648] Re: Top bar and shell dialogs are not displayed properly when zoom is enabled

2019-03-08 Thread Christopher Millsap
Thanks. I did install the .debs and now the fix is working for me. I
will note that after installing the .debs and rebooting my machine, the
GUI would not come up. This was resolved by reinstalling the desktop
from the CLI. In any event, the fix is working and I appreciate the
help. If you need any information from me, please let me know.

2019-03-07 Thread Christopher Millsap
I noticed that this is scheduled to go out in August for Bionic. Is
there any way that I can install the mutter module with the fix before
then? This is definitely making my life difficult even with a 27 inch
monitor because of my vision.

Re: [Bug 1795637] Re: No login screen when booting Cosmic due to plymouth racing with the rest of the boot process and not releasing DRM devices in time

2018-10-22 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi Will!

Just wanted to follow up with some good news and maybe something you
folks can use to help fix this one should it ever come around on the
guitar? :)
I found I was able to get Gnome to start up correctly on boot if I just
add this line to the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf:
WaylandEnable=false

I added that as a comment to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1796614
If I have more time I'd love to dig into the C code and figure out what
about Wayland detection is failing - the Alienware 17 R5 has the Nvidia
GTX 1080 as well as the Intel graphics chipset for longer batter life
when not gaming / doing high end 3D. I wonder if the Wayland detection
is getting fouled up on that?
Anyway, I am loving 18.10 now that I have the issues ironed out. Once
again thank you for all the work you do on both the software and the
community!
-Chris

[Bug 1799073] Re: Full screen key chorded zoom (Alt+Super+=) fails in 18.04.1/18.10

2018-10-22 Thread Christopher Patti
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Hi all. I noticed this problem when I upgraded from 18.04 to 18.04.1
(Worked perfectly in stock 18.04) and then I was testing the 18.10 beta
and hoped it would be fixed there but it's not.

To reproduce: login to the regular Ubuntu desktop, hit Super+Alt+= (You
can validate that your keyboard shortcut is set to the default in
  Settings->Keyboard.)

I also tried changing the keyboard mapping for this action in case there
was a conflict, and no matter what I set it to I couldn't zoom from the
  keyboard.

As a partially blind user, this is a show stopper for me - I require
screen zoom to be able to use Ubuntu at all for any serious work.

  Thanks for everything you do!

[Bug 1799073] Re: Full screen key chorded zoom (Alt+Super+=) fails in 18.04.1/18.10

2018-10-22 Thread Christopher Patti
That work-around works perfectly, thank you *SO* much!

FWIW I ran the apport command after applying the work-around you
suggested. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help on this
one.

Thanks!

[Bug 1796614] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 boots to a blank screen with a blinking cursor

2018-10-21 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi guys! (Daniel? Since you seem to be the only one reading this :)

I fixed it! :) I added:

WaylandEnable=false
ow at les
to the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and the Gnome GUI starts right
up on login!

I feel accomplished! :)

Now at least if anyone ever has time to fix the core issue, they'll know
exactly where to look. I'll post the same thing in the upstream issue.

[Bug 1799073] [NEW] Full screen key chorded zoom (Alt+Super+=) fails in 18.04.1/18.10

2018-10-21 Thread Christopher Patti
Public bug reported:

Hi all. I noticed this problem when I upgraded from 18.04 to 18.04.1
(Worked perfectly in stock 18.04) and then I was testing the 18.10 beta
and hoped it would be fixed there but it's not.

To reproduce: login to the regular Ubuntu desktop, hit Super+Alt+= (You
can validate that your keyboard shortcut is set to the default in
Settings->Keyboard.)

-Chris
(Happy to try any work-arounds or testing people can think up to help fix this
problem)

2018-10-14 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi there. Thanks for the triage. As per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1795637/comments/25
this bug isn't a duplicate of the bug you mention. I've removed the
duplicate notation.

In fact this bug is being tracked in upstream Gnome bug

[Bug 1795637] Re: No login screen when booting Cosmic due to plymouth racing with the rest of the boot process and not releasing DRM devices in time

2018-10-12 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi there! I'm looking for suggestions on further testing I can do to
disambiguate the situation I'm seeing from this bug.

I reported https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1796614
which was marked as a duplicate of this bug.

However, I now have this package installed (Output of apt policy below),
and I am still seeing a blank screen with a blinking cursor at initial
boot, but can flip to a different VT, login and run startx and
everything functions normally.

Am I

A) Mis-understanding what I need to do in order to test this fix, or
B) missing some other subtlety that would lead to my expectations that this bug
should go away to be invalid or
C) in fact observing a different bug altogether that isn't a duplicate of this
one?

Any hints anyone can throw my way would be very much appreciated. Thanks
in advance!

[Bug 1726262] Re: 17.10 - flickering overlay patterns in gnome-terminal

2018-08-04 Thread Christopher Snowhill
Confirming that this issue does occur with Ubuntu 18.04.1, i7 3770, with
AMD Radeon RX 480, using AMDGPU. I'm also using the kernel ppa 4.17 from
June 4th, so I can keep AMDGPU DC enabled and use my primary monitor's
DVI-D dual link connection to support 120Hz refresh rate.

I can also confirm that unchecking "Use transparency from system theme",
checking "Use transparent background", and re-checking "Use transparency
from system theme", results in a stable background. Perhaps "Use
transparent background" should check itself if the system theme employs
transparency?

[Bug 1759836] Re: systemd-udevd consumes 100% of CPU

2018-07-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Vinícius Milanez Couto, in order to allow additional upstream mainline kernel
developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please
test the latest mainline kernel? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is in a folder at the very top of the page (not the daily
folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the mainline kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is not reproducible in the mainline
kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a
black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the Bug
Description:

the release candidate number if it exists.

If the issue is reproducible with the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

It is most helpful that after testing of the latest mainline kernel is
complete, you mark this report Status Confirmed.

Lastly, to keep this issue relevant to upstream, please continue to test
the latest mainline kernel as it becomes available.

Thank you for your help.

[Bug 1778422] [NEW] evince responds to mouse location when it does not have focus. Scrolls wildly up or down.

2018-06-24 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Evince sometimes gets into a state when it scrolls all the way up or all
the way down in a document, based on where the mouse cursor is, even
though evince does not have the focus, and any of the other windows is
actively receiving input / etc, ie obviously has focus.

[Bug 1773484] Re: Login screen not moved to used monitor

2018-05-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Sending to gnome-shell for review, given monitor does display output
immediately after first configuration via Settings > Devices > Display
(i.e. appears not driver/kernel issue).

** Description changed:

- On Ubuntu 16.04 the login screen and system menu bar, ... is moved to
- the monitor where the mouse pointer is located. On Ubuntu 18.04 login
- dialog and system menues are restricted to the main monitor.
+ What is expected to happen is that with my computer turned off, when I
+ plug in my external VGA monitor into my laptop for the first time, and
+ boot up to the login screen, the display is in mirror mode and I can see
+ the login screen on both the built-in screen, and external monitor.

- So if you have a notebook with defect lcd display you can work with it
- using Ubuntu 16.04 and an external monitor, but you cannot work with
- Ubuntu 18.04, because you are not able to login!
-
- This problem was also asked on:
-
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1031808/problem-with-login-screen-with-dual-monitor-on-ubuntu-18-04
+ What happens instead is that the login screen is only shown on the
+ built-in screen.

  3) What is expected to happen is when one opens

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/531516/+attachment/1207516/+files/test.pdf
one may click one of the four buttons, and then clicks another, the
first one disappears, and reappears in the secondly clicked button, just
  like Adobe Reader.

What happens instead is clicking the second radio button does input a
mark in the second button, but the first button clicked still has its
mark. This was originally reported to be a regression.

WORKAROUND: Use Google Chrome's built-in PDF viewer.
