@Sebastien, I messed around with a concept of a fix, https://code.launchpad.net /~colin-king/gconf/lp-1292021 - however I'm not sufficiently experienced to know how to get this fix into the package, so I'd prefer if the desktop team could handle it for me. [Bug 1292021] [NEW] gconfd-2 is polling every 30 seconds calling periodic_cleanup_timeout
Public bug reported: I'm trying to reduce the amount of system activity to keep power usage down, and I've noticed that gconfd-2 is calling periodic_cleanup_timeout() every 30 seconds. This seems a little excessive and I am sure that doubling the polling interval won't impact the responsiveness of the daemon. I am suggesting that the polling time is doubled to 60 seconds. ** Affects: gconf (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Colin King (colin-king) Status: In Progress ** Changed in: gconf (Ubuntu) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: gconf (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: gconf (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Colin King (colin-king) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gconf in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292021 Title: gconfd-2 is polling every 30 seconds calling periodic_cleanup_timeout To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gconf/+bug/1292021/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 904238] [NEW] bluetooth-applet: does not save on/off state over reboots
Public bug reported: When enabled Bluetooth can typically consume ~1 Watt of power. The Gnome bluetooth-applet always has this enabled on login from a clean boot. Turning off Bluetooth temporarily disables Bluetooth during the session and also if one logs off and logs back in again. However, it does not save this disabled state over a reboot. Since I always want to disable Bluetooth until I need it (which is generally quite rare), the default action of never saving my preferred "off" state for Bluetooth is not only perplexing but annoying as I have to disable it each time I start my machine and log in. I've measured the power consumed on a ThinkPad X220i, and I can see that disabling Bluetooth saves ~57.7mA which works out to be about 1.1 Watts or ~7% of the total power consumed. I therefore think that bluetooth- applet should have the smarts to be able to save my preferred on/off state because the default action is definitely not battery friendly. ** Affects: gnome-bluetooth (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-bluetooth (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-12.04-beta-1 ** Description changed: - Bluetooth when enabled can typically consume ~1 Watt of power. However, it does not + save this disabled state over a reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-bluetooth in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/904238 Title: bluetooth-applet: does not save on/off state over reboots To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-bluetooth/+bug/904238/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 728623] Re: Battery present rate always 0 from /proc/acpi/battery/BAT?/state
@Earl, How do you think we should proceed with this - are you able to contact the BIOS vendor and escalate this? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728623 Title: Battery present rate always 0 from /proc/acpi/battery/BAT?/state -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 728623] Re: Battery rate always 0
Thanks Earl, When you run the command: cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: 0 mA remaining capacity: 4406 mAh present voltage: 12527 mV the ACPI driver evaluates the ACPI method _BST. The /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state fields are mapped as follows: "charging state:" --> _BST package element 0 values: 0 = charged, 1 = discharging, 2 = charging, 4 = critical "present rate:"--> _BST package element 1 "remaining capacity:" --> _BST package element 2 "present voltage:" --> _BST package element 3 The extracted _BST method from the DSDT in the acpidump is as follows (I added the comments) // Defaulted _BST return package Name (PKG2, Package (0x04) { Zero, One, One, 0x39D0 }) Method (_BST, 0, NotSerialized) { If (ECON) { Sleep (0x30) Store (^^PCI0.LPCB.EC0.BST0, Local0) And (Local0, 0x07, Local0) // read battery charging state from embedded controller memory Sleep (0x30) Store (^^PCI0.LPCB.EC0.BRC0, Local1) // read remaining capacity from embedded controller memory Sleep (0x30) Store (^^PCI0.LPCB.EC0.BPV0, Local2) // read present voltage from embedded controller memory Store (Local0, Index (PKG2, Zero)) // set charging state Store (Zero, Index (PKG2, One)) // set present rate = 0 Store (Local1, Index (PKG2, 0x02)) // set remaining capacity Store (Local2, Index (PKG2, 0x03)) // set present voltage } Return (PKG2)// return the battery status package to the Operating System that evaluated _BST } So, as one can see, the "present rate" field is being set to zero in the firmware, and the kernel is just reporting exactly what the firmware is returning. Section 10.2.2.6 of version 4.0a of the ACPI specification states: "Batteries that are rechargeable and are in the discharging state are required to return a valid Battery Present Rate value." So in my opinion this should be reported as a bug to the BIOS vendor. The_BST method as it is not conforming to the ACPI specification, section 10.2.2.6, "Battery Present Rate value." There is little we can do in software to fix this at the kernel level. ** Tags added: acpi-battery ** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Colin King (colin-king) ** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Summary changed: - Battery rate always 0 + Battery present rate always 0 from /proc/acpi/battery/BAT?/state -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728623 Title: Battery present rate always 0 from /proc/acpi/battery/BAT?/state -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 539477] Re: Video out hot key sends super + p + return on many upcoming Dell & HP systems
Using acpi_osi="Windows 2006" may address this issue, but I've already seen one BIOS that this fails on, so it's not a generic solution. Using acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2009\" maybe better temporary workaround for now, but it will fail when the kernel gets upgraded and includes the names of newer Windows. It's going to turn out very ugly if we carry on using this method of disabling this Windows 7 feature in the BIOS. I've looked at a couple of DSDT tables and found that when Windows 7 is matched in the ACPI _OSI() method the embedded controller is tweaked to enable this Windows 7 feature to emit the key sequence. The exact implementation will vary from BIOS to BIOS, so it's really quite ugly. -- Video out hot key sends super + p + return on many upcoming Dell & HP systems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539477 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
