[Bug 1195568] [NEW] glib2.0 2.37.3-1ubuntu1: invalid changelog entry format

2013-06-27 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Public bug reported:

The changelog entry for 2.37.3-1ubuntu1 is unterminated [1], flowing in
to the next entry for the unreleased debian changes. The following does
not conform to changelog format as defined by debian-policy [2]:

glib2.0 (2.37.3-1ubuntu1) saucy; urgency=low

  * Resynchronise on unrelease Debian SVN (glib is in NEW there). Remaining
change:
- Build-Depend on python:any for cross building.

glib2.0 (2.37.3-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * libglib2.0-tests: Depend on shared-mime-info required by contenttype test.
  * New upstream release
  * 0001-Revert-g_file_set_contents-don-t-fsync-on-ext3-4.patch: Drop, now
upstream.
  * debian/tests/installed-tests: Add a new DEP-8 test to run the
installed-tests. Doesn't use the test runner yet as this isn't packaged.
  * Refresh patches.
  * Update symbols file.

 fails to list the binary

The trigger executes only one command, you can invoke it manually without
--quiet to see if it behaves similar:
# gtk-update-icon-cache --force --quiet /usr/share/icons/hicolor

(and/or gtk-update-icon-cache-3.0)

Some programs take special measures for this; most do not. You should
not expect any process started from a specific shell to survive after
you exit that shell. If you want to start an arbitrary program, use
the run dialog (ALT-F2) – this is what it's for.

Not init (exit from the desktop session and see that the program in
question is closed).

FYI the shared component in this case is the shell (usually
/usr/bin/bash or similar) which is run by these terminal programs.

Processes started by a shell are (typically) terminated when that shell
exits.  That is by design.

[Bug 819842] Re: Commands in the background are terminated after closing the terminal

2012-09-19 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Comment #1 is correct. This is the intended behaviour of the system.

When you start a process it is always as a child of another, usually
some session. Graphically, you log in to a desktop session. When you
start gnome-terminal you are beginning a separate shell session and any
programs started in that terminal belong to the shell session [1].
There are good reasons for this design.

Any program can be started in the desktop session, without needing a
menu entry. For example, GNOME provides the run program dialog (ALT-F2)
for this purpose. If you desire a program to last for the duration of
the desktop session, start it using the run dialog and *not* from gnome-
terminal.

[1] Some programs apparently take measures to escape from the shell
session so that they appear to run in the desktop-session. These are
exceptional and should not be considered the norm. If you start a
program from a shell session you should expect that it will remain under
the control of that shell.

The ValueError from the log is a safety check against such
