[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2012-04-12 Thread Dave North
Thanks for going after this problem, all! However, I'm not clear on
something. In my case, I like to save a "standard" session that starts
up every time, not the latest session. With that in mind, would it be
possible to set the environment variable, close the session (in correct
form), re-open it, then unset the variable to lock it in that state? Or
would that just revert to No Saved Session status?

I'm looking forward to some foot shooting.

I think I answered my own question. So now this is a question (and if it
can be obliterated, great!)

Same result with a new clean install + gnome3. This does not show up on
either arch linux or fedora, so at this point it's unique to ubuntu as
far as I can tell.

[Bug 878970] [NEW] Gnome-terminal does not honor turning off "Show menubar by default in new terminals" pref

2011-10-20 Thread Dave North
Public bug reported:

When I set the above pref "Show menubar by default in new terminals" to
"off" by unchecking, newly created terminal windows still include the
menubar. Even more curious, in order to make it go away, I have to click
"Show menu" in the "View" menu, which will then show a checkmark for
"on." Then I can select it again, which finally gets rid of the Menubar.

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2011-05-26 Thread Dave North
Not sure I follow the sense of this change. First, the problem is
specific to only Unity and its fallback mode. KDE, XFCE, etc are not
affected.

Second, it was my understanding that Ubuntu-classic is a subset of Unity
(the fallback 2d mode). Is that incorrect?

On the other hand, recent moves (wishlist backburner, change title)
imply this is a wontfix...?

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2011-05-02 Thread Dave North
I think you've got it about right, though I interpret the discussion as
"if someone finds a way to do it maybe we will put it in." On the other
hand, it looks like it's a good thing somebody submitted a bug, since it
appears the various folks in that discussion think it would be too much
trouble or something to file it. Or really, that the general trend is to
pretend this isn't a bug. I expect, following the logic of the
discussion, that suspend and hibernate will soon be removed too.

However, I also agree that it looks unlikely it will be fixed. Note that
(a) though the kernel etc in Squeeze is quite old, everything I've tried
works there. It might be useful to consider that as an option. Just
tryna be helpful!

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2011-04-30 Thread Dave North
No, I can't! I was primarily interested in Unity, but it's very
interesting to see the pref gone from Gnome 2 also. I hadn't previously
tried starting classic -- at least on my setup, it does a pretty good
job of matching things up. Which means unfortunately they both fail in
the same way.

[Bug 771892] [NEW] Autostarted Gnome Terminal Appears Under Top Menu Bar

2011-04-27 Thread Dave North
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When I set up gnome-terminal in autostart, it does appear at the
beginning of the session, but it's crammed into the upper left corner.
Consequently, its control bar is buried under the shiny new and probably
ill-considered Apple Bar and gnome-terminal cannot be moved without
using the Alt-grab nonsense.

[Bug 651331] [NEW] gnome-terminal does not respect number of rows set in gconf-editor

2010-09-29 Thread Dave North
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Typically, gnome-terminal will start with 80 columns and 24 rows. It
offers no pref to change either parameter, but gconf-editor has both. If
you change the setting in gconf-editor to a different number of rows,
gnome-terminal appears to ignore it regardless of how you start a new
terminal. This is true even if you right-click in a running terminal and
select "Open Terminal."

Am testing Maverick Meercat Beta. Do not know if this reflects an
upstream issue or is specific to Ubuntu; I haven't checked on any other
system. However, this may have been true in Lucid also.

I'm also having the same problem, but it's an intel system (so it's not
an AMD thing). Using x4500 graphics subsystem. Also can confirm the
problem goes away when the screensaver process is killed.
