[Bug 267431] Re: Ekiga SMS service is unreliable

2008-09-09 Thread Dave Walker
Hi Matteo,

Can you describe how it is failing? Is it being dropped, or are you
getting a report back in the ekiga chat pane that it failed?

Can you describe what, if any server software you are using, and what is
the intended recipient's hardware (or is it a real SMS device
cell/mobile?).

[Bug 267431] Re: Ekiga SMS service is unreliable

2008-09-10 Thread Dave Walker
Hi Matteo,

I have used ekiga to send SMS's to a local sms client without issue.
This issue could be a network issue, a problem with diamondcard, or as
you reported a bug with ekiga.

Could i ask you to contact your provider, and/or a community forum
attached (if one exists) and find if the problem is well known. I would
suggest trying another SIP SMS client, but i can't think of another one.

This will help narrow down the issue. The next stage would be some
debug logs from ekiga and/or a packet dump.

2008-09-09 Thread Dave Walker
I can confirm this bug. On first inspection it would seem that the url
isn't properly encapsulated with -->"<-- or the punctuation question
mark isn't properly escaped.

[Bug 269500] Re: "Log Out" and "Switch User" are misaligned

2008-09-12 Thread Dave Walker
Hi Matthew,

Looking at your attachment i agree it looks 'odd', however - using the
proposed new human theme (screenshot attached), i'm not convinced it
looks so bad. However, there is still something not quite right in my
opinion and therefore i'm confirming the bug - and would welcome further
input to see others opinions.

[Bug 490142] Re: Documents folder won't load if it contains PDF files

2009-11-29 Thread Dave Walker
I am terribly sorry but I cannot reproduce the problem with a fresh
installation of Karmic under KDE or GNome. I loaded a few PDF files
followed by nearly a thousand PDFs ranging in size from a few kilobytes
to 20MB in 30 sub-folders. If I can reproduce the problem then I am
more than happy to mark the bug as "complete".

Do you have any other thoughts on how I might reproduce the problem?

I am very sorry I cannot be more help.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-11-30 Thread Dave Walker
I want to confirm this bug but I need additional information. What
happens if you decline to import settings from pidgin when launching
empathy? Are all your settings gone?

If so then does the installation of pidgin damage your empathy
configuration files or just launching the application?

I need to reproduce the problem before I can update the bug.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-02 Thread Dave Walker
Duncan:

I have not tried to reproduce the bug because I am not clear on the
steps needed to reproduce it. Should I just install Empathy, launch
it, create a couple of contacts, close it, install pidgin, launch it,
close it then launch empathy? Will that reproduce the problem? or am
I mis-understanding you?

If there is data loss when launching either application then that is a
serious issue that really should be addressed.

[Bug 491709] Re: Evolution Fails to get more than One of Many new emails

2009-12-02 Thread Dave Walker
You can debug the communications with your mail server with environment
variable CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG.

   1. Exit evolution and run the command 'evolution --force-shutdown'
   2. Run the command 'env CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution >& /tmp/camel.out'
   3. Use evolution like usual

The server traffic will be logged to /tmp/camel.out file delimited by
the words "sending:" and "receiving:". Certain information such as
usernames and passwords, and most message content will be hidden or not
printed.

Please attach the resulting /tmp/camel.out log file. If you could
produce a very short movie and screen prints documenting the problem
then that may also help track down the problem.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Walker
Duncan:

I have a blank VM of Karmic. I will..

- launch the VM
- load Empathy
- use Empathy
- install Pidgin
- load both Empathy and Pidgin

If I loose access to either application then I will confirm the bug
otherwise I will mark it as invalid. I will update the bug tomorrow
either way.

Sebastien:

I agree but I guess the reason we call it a bug is because there is some
unexpected behavior. If there is something going on between Pidgin and
Empathy then I guess we'll need to take a closer look.

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Walker
Duncan:

I am so terribly sorry but I am unable to reproduce this bug. I loaded
a VM, installed both apps, launch them both simultaneously then one
after the other. Just in case there was something wrong with the
packaging I rebooted the VM, uninstalled and reinstalled both apps and
tried again. Both pidgin and empathy worked flawlessly. It is possible
there is a bug somewhere but I simply cannot find a way to reproduce it.

I have to mark the bug invalid. If you find new evidence of the bug and
can reproduce it then I encourage you to post. I am happy to work with
you in the future.

[Bug 491709] Re: Evolution Fails to get more than One of Many new emails

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Walker
To disable debugging enter this from the command line:

env CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=0

If that does not work then please let me know.

I would greatly appreciate if you could complete one more step in the
troubleshooting process just to make sure this is not a specific
malformed email causing the problem. If you have access to webmail for
this account then could you login and delete all emails in the account
then empty the trash? If not then could you configure thunderbird to
download all emails on this account and remove them from the server when
finished? It is possible Evolution is less forgiving than Thunderbird
when it comes to a corrupted email.

Once this is done then have someone forward you a couple of emails and
confirm the problem is reproducible.

I opened a bug report upstream here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603741

You should post the results there.

[Bug 492959] Re: Evince cannot save filled PDF forms

2009-12-05 Thread Dave Walker
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I have tried to reproduce the problem using evince 2.28.1 on a vanilla
installation of Karmic but I am unable to reproduce the problem using
SAVE A COPY.

Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

[Bug 492848] Re: Evolution email randomly shuts down

2009-12-06 Thread Dave Walker
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need the specific steps or actions you took that caused
you to encounter the problem. If we cannot reproduce the problem then
it will become much more difficult to fix.

Thanks!

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu

2009-12-06 Thread Dave Walker
Greetings,

I am happy to help!Could you please tell me how you concluded
Nautilus is consuming 100% of the CPU and 876MB of RAM for some period
of time? I need the specific steps you took to recreate this problem
so I can reproduce this problem.

You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"

if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu

2009-12-06 Thread Dave Walker
I fully understand. Does your machine respond normally? If your CPU
was truly pegged at 100% then your machine would be completely unusable.
You would not be able to launch Firefox, Nautilis or much of anything.
It is possible the applet is reporting inaccurate data or it is being
mis-read. Could you post a screenshot of the utility where it shows
your machine is consuming 100% of the CPU?Just press the PRINT
SCREEN button your keyboard, save the screen print to disk then attach
it to this bug report. Make sure there is no private data on your
screen before taking the screen print.

Are you comfortable accessing the console? If so then I can walk you
through confirming your system is using 100% of the cpu.

The RAM consumption is completely normal for both Windows and Linux. I
am attaching a screenshot of a pretty standard Windows performance
monitor. In this case, even with moderate use, a Windows Vista consumes
about 1.2GB of RAM and Windows 7 consumes even more. The reason why
your system appears to use 876MB (which is a pretty small number) is
because most of that is used by your swap partition.

There are 2 reasons why data is swapped to disk. First, when the system
requires more memory than is physically available, the kernel swaps out
less used pages and gives memory to the current application (process)
that needs the memory immediately. This is unlikely in your case
because you have enough RAM available. Second, a significant number of
the pages used by an application during its startup phase may only be
used for initialization and then never used again. The system can swap
out those pages and free the memory for other applications or even for
the disk cache. If your system is loaded long enough then eventually
that data will be garbage collected freeing up space for other data.
If you have enough RAM then that data may be stored in your swap
partition for days, weeks, months or years assuming your machine is
never rebooted.

I hope this helps.

j1mbo:

If you do not have time to read though the material then I fully
understand. If you had then eventually you would have landed here:

http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml

If you are having problems with the application itself (rather than
crashing while sending/receiving email) then you should read the section
"Getting a debug backtrace". Just make sure you install Evolution
Debugging Symbols either via the package manager or from the command
line before beginning:

sudo apt-get install evolution-exchange-dbg evolution-dbg evolution-
data-server-dbg

Please let me know if there is anything more I can do to help!

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu

2009-12-07 Thread Dave Walker
Azraele:

I am very sorry for doubting you. You are correct and your concerns
are valid. Do you have any other thoughts on how to reproduce the
problem? Is Nautilus launching on its own and spiking to 100% while
downloading? after the downloads are complete? Are you opening
Nautilus to browse the folders where the torrents are being stored when
the problem occurs?

We will need to figure out the steps necessary to recreate the problem
before we can confirm the bug. Once I can recreate the problem then it
will become very easy to reproduce and get it fixed. Any help you can
provide to get us there would be appreciated.
