[Bug 816669] [NEW] encrypted-home support in new user dialog
Public bug reported: seb128 asked me to file this bug... He noticed that the Gnome3 new user dialog does not support the encrypt- home-directory feature that was present in previous versions of Gnome. To solve this, the new user dialog would have a boolean checkbox (defaulted to un-checked), which asks if this new user's home directory should be created. Talk to mpt about the wordsmithing. If checked, then you need to add --encrypt-home to the 'adduser' invocation. Before running adduser, you'd also need to ensure that ecryptfs-utils is installed. For real security, you would also need to run (as root) ecryptfs-setup- swap, which would encrypt the user's swap space. This is necessary, as any files/data that gets swapped out to disk could be written in the clear, thereby circumventing the user's requested encryption. Further note that if swap is encrypted, hibernation should be disabled (suspend continues to work just fine). ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Rodrigo Moya (rodrigo-moya) Status: Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/816669 Title: encrypted-home support in new user dialog To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/816669/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
Okay, I'm *finally* back home and was able to test this... I can confirm part of what Thierry suggested. I removed ~/.config/monitors.xml and that got rid of the Samsung flashing monitor on reboot. It comes up in cloned monitor mode, dropping down to the lowest common resolution, which is 1280x800. I am now working on my 24 monitor at 1280x800, which is better than the unusable flashing screen. Okay, so now I try to change the resolution of my Samsung monitor to its max. I disabled the laptop screen entirely, and then I set the external Samsung to 1920x1080, and boom, flashing green/black screen all over again :-( Give it 30 seconds, and it restores. Next, I tried enabling both screens, with my laptop at 1280x800 and my external monitor at 1920x1080. Surprisingly, this worked just fine. Unfortunately, this isn't my preferred working setup :-( I prefer to put my laptop in my docking station, lid closed, and go straight from a single screen with 1280x800 resolution, to a single external monitor with 1920x1080. Note that all of this works fine in 10.10. [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
Bryce, No luck here :-( Still very, very broken in my home setup. A few pieces of information, though... 1) GDM seems to work correctly. ie, if I reboot my system with my external 24 Samsung 1920x1080 monitor hooked up, GDM comes up in mirror mode, full resolution and grandeur. When I log in, though, Classic or Unity, I get nothing on either monitor. Well, I get the flashing that Andres showed in his video. 2) I gave a talk today at Texas Linux Fest, and brought along a 10.04 LiveUSB. However, when I tested Natty against the monitors the conference provided, everything worked just fine. So perhaps the problem is monitor specific? My monitor is a relatively common Samsung SyncMaster 2333 24, that has worked perfectly from Hardy - Maverick. It's only Natty that's batty. [Bug 464783] Re: `qemu -ncurses` 80x25 vs gnome-terminal 80x24
From my little perspective, it seems like it would be nice if gnome- terminal defaulted to 80x25. A quick search and a read of wikipedia seems to indicate that 80x25 is the most common format: * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80x25 By far the most common text mode used in DOS environments, and initial Windows consoles, is the default 80 columns by 25 rows, or 80×25, with 16 colors. This mode was available on practically all IBM and compatible personal computers. All 80×25 modes also had a virtual 80×24 mode, used by some applications that needed a status bar on the last row, like terminal emulators. In reality, it was the same 80×25 mode, but restrained by software to make the last row unaccesible. [Bug 469571] Re: Cannot move any file outside of home folder to trash (ext4)
This looks to me to be a problem with Nautilus (or whatever is providing the delete-trash mechanism). I suspect that it doesn't want to move files across mount points, as this can take a long time (as compared to flipping a few inodes). If your trash bin is in your encrypted Home, then to move a file from /tmp to Trash means encrypting it (which might take a few seconds if the file is big). [Bug 470129] Re: 9.10 karmic gdm login fails after changing password (users-admin) when home folder encrypted (ecryptfs)
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 307019 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307019 See step 4 in the bug report -- that's the problem. In versions of Ubuntu before Lucid (this is in fact fixed in Lucid), if an administrator changed a password using System - Administration - Users and Groups, they were able to force-change a user's password without entering the user's old password. This would break the encrypted home setup because both the old and new passwords are needed to re-wrap the wrapped-passphrase. The proper ways of changing a password has always worked with encrypted home -- that is, System - Preferences - About Me, and passwd. In any case, the other bug that this one is a duplicate of shows how this was fixed in gnome-system-tools. -- 9.10 karmic gdm login fails after changing password (users-admin) when home folder encrypted (ecryptfs) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/470129 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to liboobs in ubuntu (via bug 307019). -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 106621] Re: GNOME Trash doesn't show deleted files on fuse partitions (ecryptfs / encfs / Private / ntfs-3g)
From an eCryptfs perspective, this is a limitation of using Encrypted- Private, rather than Encrypted-Home. In both Jaunty and Karmic, you now have the ability to encrypt your entire home directory, which includes your Trash folder. Thus you can protect your Trash through Encrypted-Home. Truly, the Encrypted-Home feature was developed to handle situations like this, where users had to painstakingly identify what was to be marked Private. Thanks for the report. Obviously, this is because your home directory is not mounted at the time in which gdm tries to read your .face file. [Bug 371363] Re: GDM doesn’t pick up my fa ce when home is encrypted
This is a can't fix from the ecryptfs perspective. If you face image is stored in your encrypted home directory, you can't read this data until you've entered your password. This is by design. GDM could perhaps store your picture some place other than your home directory (like i /var/lib perhaps). However, I suspect others would fairly complain that private data (their image) is being leaked to non- encrypted storage. Now, if you really want to work around this issue you could: 1) copy your non-encrypted image to some non-encrypted location, like /var/lib 2) create a symlink in your non-encrypted home directory to the non-encrypted image. :-Dustin ** Changed in: ecryptfs-utils Status: New = Won't Fix -- GDM doesn’t pick up my face when home is encrypted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

If so, note bug #255799, which is a Wishlist known issue, asking for pam_ecryptfs to support fingerprint readers. :-Dustin -- can't login withough manually modprobing ecryptfs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/276745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 284443] Re: Encrypted Private Directory is not automatically mounted when using gdm auto-login
Okay, per discussion with pitti in IRC, I think the proper solution would involve: * changing the symlink in an un-mounted ~/Private directory to point to a wrapper script, instead of /sbin/mount.ecryptfs_private * having that wrapper script: * first try to perform the mount * if the required key is not found * Explain the situation * Prompt for the password using gksu/zenity/kdesu * Perform the mount This is Jaunty material, and will probably involve assistance from the desktop folks. :-Dustin -- Encrypted Private Directory is not automatically mounted when using gdm auto-login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284443 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 284443] Re: ecryptfs does not work with gdm auto-login
The encrypted private directory should absolutely NOT be mounted on automatic, password-less logins. That would entirely defeat its purpose. In fact, auto logins should never be used on any system where you care at all about security. I'll document this in the EncryptedPrivateDirectory wiki page, and eventually in the ecryptfs-setup-private manpage in a subsequent upstream release. I'm not going to clutter the ecryptfs dialogs with this information. I'll leave it to the gdmsetup developers to decide whether they want to include a note. :-Dustin ** Changed in: ecryptfs-utils (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Dustin Kirkland (kirkland) Status: New = Won't Fix ** Also affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ecryptfs does not work with gdm auto-login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284443 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 279422] Re: Impossible to remove Private directory desktop icon
I'm marking 'Invalid' against ecryptfs-utils, and adding a task against gconf2. ecryptfs-utils has nothing to do with the desktop icon. It simply establishes a mount point. The desktop then adds icons for dynamic mounts. Perhaps the desktop team has a way to blacklist the ~/Private mountpoint? To the question about automounting on login, that is a key design point. You can change this deleting ~/.ecryptfs/auto-mount. :-Dustin ** Also affects: gconf2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: ecryptfs-utils (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- Impossible to remove Private directory desktop icon https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279422 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gconf2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH
Hey Kees- I must admit that I don't entirely grasp the scope of the issue you're raising with /home living on a networked filesystem (sorry). * Is your concern a security one, where a malicious user gaining access to the network file server could potentially inject badness in various users ~/bin? * Or is it a performance concern, in that we're adding a search in PATH on a remote filesystem? * ...? In the mean time, I have a simple, one-line patch that adds ~/bin to the end of the initial PATH definition in /etc/environment. Depending on Kees' explanation of his concerns, I can add some additional logic to libpam-modules.postinst to affirm that no user's ~bin is on a networked filesystem at /etc/environment creation time. :-Dustin ** Attachment added: pam.64064.debdiff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15442148/pam.64064.debdiff -- would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/64064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH
I have tested my patch. It works well with: * bash * dash * ksh * ash But does not work with: * zsh * csh * fish * tcsh * es * rc * sash I did not see any ill-effects on the shells where it didn't work, besides not finding executables in ~/bin. And I think we have the vast majority of Ubuntu's shell users covered with (bash, dash, ksh, ash). :-Dustin -- would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/64064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH
My patch also works with: * Gnome + Alt-F2 * XFCE + Alt-F2 * KDE This provides the desired behavior covers the main Ubuntu desktop managers, and the Bourne-compatible shells (dash, bash, ash, ksh) and would benefit the majority of [K/X/U]buntu users. It does *not* break functionality on non-Bourne shells. Users of these shells will need to update their ~/.pam_environment or other .*rc scripts to add a fully qualified /home/user/bin to the PATH environment variable. Or, actually just: eval PATH=$PATH as the problem seems to be that non-Bourne shells do not evaluate the ~ or the $HOME variables in the PATH declaration. [Bug 221071] Re: evolution loses message preview configuration option

[Bug 221061] [NEW] evolution: cannot select matching search messages and move to folder
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution This seems to have changed very recently, probably in the last Evolution update for Hardy. This is a common use case for me, I use it many times a day. To reproduce: 1) Have an inbox with some messages 2) Search the inbox on some terms 3) All folders but the current folder is grayed (greyed) out, and therefore, you cannot move matching searched messages to a folder. This is inconvenient, as I like to read all messages matching a certain term (like [Activity]), and move them in bulk to my archive. Ctrl-M If evolution crashes, or if I poweroff my system, or even logout of my desktop without first closing evolution, I have to turn message preview back on.
