[Bug 1881932] Re: subiquity isn't able to create btrfs subvolumes during installation

2024-08-27 Thread Eduard
This is indeed very strange.
From different Ubuntu LTS versions which I am trying (Focal, Jammy, Noble) only
Noble seems to have this problem.

Obviously I can move everything from / to subvolumes like @ and @home
myself with a couple of manual commands, but this makes it all so much
more difficult.

Seriously, everyone should really look at how the Fedora project has solved
this with the Anaconda installer.
It's the best I have seen from a distro installer. You can set many things
exactly the way you want with it.

Basically at least the following things should be able to be customized in
order to make it fully functional:
 - subvolumes
 - mount points for each subvolume
 - mount options (for example `noatime`, `compress=zstd:1` and `autodefrag`)

On Arch Linux I do all this stuff my myself, but easy-to-use
distributions like Ubuntu should also give options to this.

[Bug 2052913] Re: [nvidia] Large Performance Regression in fullscreen windows from Ubuntu Jammy to Ubuntu Noble

2024-04-10 Thread Eduard Kachur
Can be related, I see that fullscreen windows are not being unredirected when
running Wayland session with mutter 46 (gfx1103_r1, LLVM 15.0.7, DRM 3.57,
6.8.0-22-generic):
RENDER: No direct scanout candidate: paint-box
(1688.00,-11.00,62.00,62.00) does not match stage-view layout
(0,0,1920,1080)

Actually right after boot when opening video in firefox I can see that
it's being unredirected, but after launching few apps, log above is
being shown for fullscreen windows.

Re: [Bug 1951098] Re: When screen is locked the top bar with apps shows

2021-11-28 Thread Eduard Drenth
Hi,
Thanks for the response.
After removing extensions, logout/login and than lock screen:
- I see info about ethernet, wifi, bluetooth, battery, nightlight- I can
operate sound level and suspend computer
After putting back extensions dir, not enabling custom extensions,
logout/login and than lock screen, on top of that:
- I see live patch icon and can click settings (only see launched
settings after logging in)- I see and can operate tuxedo control centre
(launched windows I only see after logging in)
After enabling custom extensions again, logout/login and than lock
screen:

- same as above

So perhaps only live patch is an issue that belongs here, but that's
not something I can judge.

By the way I run wayland.

[Bug 1935734] Re: nautilus can't open folder as root

2021-07-13 Thread Eduard
I can confirm that I am experiencing this issue now with my Ubuntu Hirsute
installation in VirtualBox.
I just ran all package updates it after not using this VM for a while.
After this I noticed it, because I wanted to do root access actions using GNOME
Nautilus.

Not so long ago I had this same issue under XFCE on Arch Linux too, but
that one got eventually fixed by updates, most likely including GVFS or
something related.

[Bug 1909594] [NEW] No feedback when unmounting is finished

2020-12-29 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
Public bug reported:

I'm using "Files" 3.36.3-stable on Ubuntu 20.04. When writing large
amounts of data to USB HDD it can take up to a minute to fully flush the
data to HDD.

"Files" provides a button for unmounting of my USB HDD. When I click
this button unmount is started with "Unmounting usbdisk - Disconnecting
from filesystem" appearing in notification area. This notification stays
on the screen until I remove it with "X". It stays on the screen even
after unmounting is finished.

But in GUI there is NO notification that unmounting has finished! And if
the notification is removed (with "X") there is also no indication that
unmounting is still in progress.

Yes, sounds pretty much like it. I have two keyboard layouts configured

[Bug 1874547] [NEW] Super key does not open activities overview

2020-04-23 Thread Eduard Santamaria
Public bug reported:

After updating to Ubuntu Focal Fossa the Super key has stopped opening
the Activities overview.

Shortcuts involving the Super key, e.g. Super+A or Super+L work fine,
but nothing happens when only the Super key is pressed.

[Bug 1806257] Re: gnome-shell excessive logging cannot bind to x11-unix

2018-12-02 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
For some reason (I cannot remember) my root filesystem node "/" had the
owner set to my user. I guess this used to work for some time. And some
change in mutter or related packages made this break.

Changed back owner to root.root and system is now starting properly.
Don't know what to say about the system failing in such an obscure way.

[Bug 1806257] Re: gnome-shell excessive logging cannot bind to x11-unix

2018-12-02 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
The gigabytes of log messages consist only of messages like this:

Dec 2 17:08:33 host gnome-shell[3869]: failed to bind to
/tmp/.X11-unix/X1293301: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
Dec 2 17:08:33 host gnome-shell[3869]: failed to bind to
/tmp/.X11-unix/X1293302: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

Downgrading the mutter package makes the error go away.

First, it says that Shotwell bugs are tracked at http://trac.yorba.org ,

Second, it claims not to recoginise this bug tracker URL:

[Bug 1033572] [NEW] Shotwell 0.12.3 consumes massive amount of RAM if auto-import is on and you have a large photo library

2012-08-06 Thread Eduard Grebe
Public bug reported:

When initially trying to import all of my photos (about 27 000, man
RAWs), Shotwell kept crashing. I discovered it ran out of memory during
the operation. I finally managed to get it to finish by increasing my
swap space to 32GB.

However, everytime I launch the application while the "watch library
directory for new files" option is switched on, it starts an auto-import
process (even if there are no new files) and the application ends up
consuming a huge amount of RAM that it never releases. As you can see in
the attached screenshot, the application -- which had been running for
some time, no new photos to import -- is using more than 15GB of memory.

[Bug 1012054] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse is extremely sensitive despite sensitivity and acceleration set to minimum

2012-06-12 Thread Eduard Grebe
Public bug reported:

I am using an Apple Magic Mouse (bluetooth) with a MacBook Air (late
2010) running an up-to-date installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Despite
setting both acceleration and sensitivity to the minimum settings in the
Control Centre, the mouse is extremely sensitive when used on the built-
in (11") display. Please note the following:

1) The trackpad sensitivity is fine
2) The mouse sensitivity is decent when used on a large external display (22")

I would be happy to provide further details, but I was unsure against
which package to report the issue or how to collect relevant debugging
information.

[Bug 986808] [NEW] Recognize .nrg, .mdf or .img CD/DVD archives as archives

2012-04-22 Thread Eduard Gotwig
Public bug reported:

Brasero allows the user to burn .nrg, .mdf or .img files, but does not
show that the user. When I try to burn the file directly on a CD/DVD (
becouse it an image ) , it shown me the add files dialog. But img files
( created under Apple's Mac OS X ® ) are already CD/DVD archives, and
burning, copying the files to a CD/DVD makes them useless.

When I explicit select to burn the images, I can select the image files,
and brasero burns them fine.

Show the these files as CD/DVD image files, and handle them like those,
and not like normal files.

I can confirm that this still happens on 12.04 LTS.

Adding the line to xorg.conf as suggested by Pierre Chifflier makes it
work correctly. I'm using proprietary drivers too.

[Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by "Album Artist" for guest/compilations

2012-03-05 Thread Eduard Grebe
I don't see how anyone used to iTunes could be expected to accept as
poor a music manager as Rhythmbox as the default music library
application in Ubuntu. It is essentially unchanged in the last five
years and severely lacking in features. "Album artist" support is an
excellent example.

[Bug 700749] Re: Disk Utility (palimpsest) doesn't resize itself anymore, requiring users to do so to use it

I have to disagree with the low/wishlist importance. This bug seriously
impacts usability and "polish". It is the kind of thing that a
commercial operating system would not let slip through and reinforces
the impression that Linux-based OSs are left unfinished.

[Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2011-05-28 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
I see two possibilities why the Macally keyboard locks the screen.
Either it emits Usage ID 0xF9 on HID Usage Page 0x07 (Keyboard), or it
emits Usage ID 0x19e on HID Usage Page 0x0C (Consumer). In order to
verify this theory, it might be useful to have a look at the HID
descriptor and the HID events.

Depending on the results, special quirk handling of the keyboard might
be added to the linux kernel and/or gnome-screensaver gets a option to
ignore the (fake) "lock screen" key.

HOWTO:
1. get the USB vendor+product ID using lsusb
> lsusb
Search for the line with the Macally Keyboard
(e.g. I get "Bus 001 Device 007: ID 046a:0023 Cherry GmbH CyMotion Master Linux
Keyboard" for my keyboard, so the vendor:id is 046a:0023)

2. look at the device descriptors
> cd /sys/kernel/debug/hid
> ls
(I have here four entries, my keyboard makes up two of them 0003:046A:0023.0002
and 0003:046A:0023.0003; notice the matching vendor:id 046a:0023)
> sudo cat $YOUR_DEVICE1/rdesc
> sudo cat $YOUR_DEVICE2/rdesc

3. look at the events of the keys
(Please be aware that the following records all your keypresses, so don't enter
passwords or other sensitive information if you intend to post the event log to
the bug report! Entering the password for "sudo" is ok, because it asks the
password _before_ running the command)
3.1 first device
> sudo cat $YOUR_DEVICE1/events
press the volume up key
exit with CTRL-C
3.2 second device
> sudo cat $YOUR_DEVICE2/events
press the volume up key again
exit with CTRL-C

Please find attached the output from my keyboard. It is only for
demonstration purposes, because when connected via USB my keyboard does
not exhibit the "lock screen" bug.

[Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2011-05-26 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
Further information: I use the Keyboard (Cherry CyMotion Master Linux)
in PS/2 mode on a docking station of an HP notebook. In
"/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/30-keymap-hp.fdi" the scancode of the
copy key (e00a) is mapped to "screenlock". In the same directory,
mappings for several other computer manufacturers are provided.

And since gnome-screensaver listens on "screenlock" (which is identical
to "coffee"), the screensaver is started when the "copy" key is pressed.
I use the same keyboard on a different computer (non-HP) and there the
behavior is not observed, since the manufacturer string does not match
in "30-keymap-hp.fdi" and the scancode (e00a) is not set.

This is not directly related to the Macally keyboard since it is
connected by means of USB, but somehow on kernel level keycode 152
(KEY_COFFEE) is likely to be generated, which completely bypasses the
X11 key handling.

[Bug 377175] Re: Volume Up button locks screen

2011-05-26 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
Launching "dbus-monitor --system" and pressing the button gives

signal sender=:1.12 -> dest=(null destination) serial=2054
path=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input;
 interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device; member=Condition
   string "ButtonPressed"
   string "coffee"

In gnome-screensaver/src/gs-listener-dbus.c there is a hard-coded(!)
handler for the "coffee" button which instruct gnome-screensaver (i.e.
itself) to lock the screen. Apparently, unrelated buttons are mapped by
HAL to the "coffee" button. E.g. I have the problem with my Cherry
CyMotion master linux keyboard, when I press the "Copy" key.

[Bug 529023] [NEW] F-spot uses only one CPU core for CPU-intensive tasks

2010-02-27 Thread Eduard Grebe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

When I perform highly CPU-intensive tasks in F-spot, notably "Merge
Raw", the process seems to make use of only one of the four CPU cores in
my machine. The process reports 100% (or close to) CPU usage, but
looking at resource usage in Gnome System Monitor reveals that only one
core is being used maximally, while the other three are close to idle.

Is this a problem with all mono-based software in Ubuntu?

I assume you refer to trying these commands blindly:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libcairo2 libpango1.0-common
sudo fc-cache -fs
sudo update-pangox-aliases

If you first do Ctrl-Alt-F1 you will get an asci console, which you can
probably read. Try the commands from there, you should be prompted for a
password. You may have missed this prompt during your 'blind' attempt.

Success,

Eduard

[Bug 203885] Re: Can't see remote video

2009-11-13 Thread Eduard Carcole
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 and have no problems with Ekiga.

With Jaunty, sometimes, I got rid of the problem you have just by
resizing the window several times, which is kind of really odd thing,
but I used windows finally, against my own feelings.

I would like to kindly suggest to ChrisV a temporary solution, instead
of Skype, is to make video conference with Pidgin, which is still free
software under GNU license, and it works so fine for me through Google
Talk protocol, and your friend can also do through windows (Sorry if
this is not the right place for such suggestion).

[Bug 144538] Re: menu editor dont start.

2009-11-11 Thread Eduard Carcole
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 and I have the same problem.

I provide the following outputs:

When I execute alacarte from terminal I get:

edu...@ecc:~/Desktop$ alacarte
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 36, in
main()
File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 32, in main
app = MainWindow(datadir, version, sys.argv)
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line 48, in
__init__
self.editor = MenuEditor()
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 36, in
__init__
self.__loadMenus()
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 63, in
__loadMenus
self.save(True)
File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 67, in save
fd = open(getattr(self, menu).path, 'w')
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied:
'/home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu'

Of course I can execute it using sudo.

Then, because the permission is denied to
/home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu I tried to list it:

edu...@ecc:~/Desktop$ ls /home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu
ls: cannot access /home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu: Permission
denied

edu...@ecc:~/Desktop$ sudo ls /home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu
/home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu

So the problem might be the permisions on the file
/home/eduard/.config/menus/applications.menu

Since the missing information is now provided, may be this bug could be
reopened.

[Bug 477438] Re: gdm login fonts are unreadable, display rectangles not chars

2009-11-07 Thread Eduard Drenth
please consider this a very serious bug, also fonts for some (all?)
account desktops are squares.

luckily my main account still works.

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-10-13 Thread Eduard Grebe
I have continued to experience problems printing to HP Laserjet P3005dn.
However, the problems seem to disappear when I use a different PPD
called "CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.4" which is one of the 3 options listed in
the list of PPDs in the add printer tool. The two others, the default
and one labeled "hpljs" do not work.
