The problem persists. Ubuntu 23.10 / Gnome 45. I'm so used to just re-
maximizing every window now.

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2020-09-09 Thread Edward Savage
Chris,

With the following packages installed and the workaround removed the
issue no longer occurs for me when enabling Automatic Login via
Settings. I have tested rebooting and starting from off several times
and it worked as expected each time. Previously the issue occurred on
every boot.

gdm3 (3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1)
libgdm1 (3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1)
gir1.2-gdm-1.0:amd64 (3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1)
nvidia-driver-450 (450.66-0ubuntu0.20.04.1)

/etc/default/grub
```
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
```

Of note, when the desktop loaded I was greeted with the Ubuntu new user
"Connect Your Online Accounts" setup screen and what appeared to be a
fresh users settings. If this happens to anyone here there's a helpful
README.txt in ~/ reminding you that you encrypted your home directory,
and to run ecryptfs-mount-private to gain access. Oh yeah...

You can also expect to be prompted to unlock your login keyring at some
random moment a few minutes after the desktop loads.

Anyway, wonderful work, and thanks to everyone who helped fix this, at
least for me. :)

[Bug 1869769] Re: gnome-terminal regularly becomes corrupted

2020-03-30 Thread Edward Schwartz
I managed to track this down to a particular option in weechat,
eat_newline_glitch. The problem occurs when there are lines that are
_exactly_ as long as the terminal width. Here is the script:

https://gist.github.com/edmcman/8fa071e68af14c288bf1801ffc142f61

At this point, I believe it unlikely to be a gnome-terminal bug. But
I'll dig in a little more.

[Bug 1869769] [NEW] gnome-terminal regularly becomes corrupted

2020-03-30 Thread Edward Schwartz
Public bug reported:

I regularly run weechat inside gnome-terminal, and it routinely becomes
corrupted. It's hard to say whether this is a gnome-terminal bug, but
I've seen it on different machines.

The problem is perhaps best shown through a screenshot (attached). You
can see the statusbar in the second to last row incorrectly contains the
words "I would" that were displayed elsewhere in the terminal but
weechat at some point.

Normal usage of weechat results in tabs that have corruption in other
rows, but I wasn't readily able to find an example with non-sensitive
information.

1. I can type in the Search field in Evince with my laptop, which does not have

2. Evince installed version is evince 3.18.2-1ubuntu4 on said laptop,

I have two systems, a workstation with "proposed" and a laptop with
straight Xenial. Both have the same version of Evince. So it's probably
an underlying desktop library that recently showed up in "proposed".

Re: [Bug 1513168] Re: rythymbox screen goes grey and freezes after connecting IPAD

2015-12-27 Thread edward stavin
Hi. I looked at the specific request you made to obtain a backtrace but
the instructions are too complicated to figure out. Is there some sort of
executable file or one click program to run?

What I can tell you though is that after much a do I figured out that the
problem is most likely caused by the lack of up to date support for apple
IOS products. IOS 9 requires the current version of
http://www.libimobiledevice.org/downloads/libimobiledevice-1.2.0.tar.bz2 in
ubuntu from www.libimobiledevice.org

Of course this is not the end of it as the above generates dependencies
like usbmuxd and a few others that are also out of date. I think it said
it needs version 1.0.9 but ubuntu only has 1.0.8

Is there a way to get someone to update this in the near future? I get a
similar problem with Banshee when I connect the IPAD with IOS9.1 ---
Nothing happens even though the software claims its trying to update the
tablet... so this update would fix both issues I am sure.

Hope I helped

Edward

[Bug 458334] Re: Fails repeatably with "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound: The given volume was not found"

2015-12-19 Thread Edward Garson
I experienced a very similar error, but not exactly the same, when
trying to format a 4G USB 2.0 device. Matt's suggested workaround (near
the very top of this report, using dd) worked after a couple of tries. I
was getting "DBus.Python.GLib.Error" when trying to format, with the
same consequences as described in this report.

[Bug 1462692] [NEW] Ordering cycle on NetworkManager-wait-online.service/start

2015-06-06 Thread Edward Z. Yang
Public bug reported:

I recently rebooted my computer, and NetworkManager didn't come online.
Snooping dmesg revealed the problem:

[ 16.371556] systemd[1]: Breaking ordering cycle by deleting job
network.target/start
[ 16.371561] systemd[1]: Job network.target/start deleted to break ordering

NetworkManager.service/start
[ 16.371771] systemd[1]: Job NetworkManager.service/start deleted to break
ordering cycle starting with NetworkManager-wait-online.service/start

Manually running `sudo systemctl start NetworkManager` brought it back
online. But there shouldn't be an ordering cycle!

The problem seems to be that sockets wants cups, and then through a
hilarious chain of events we hit openafs-client which obviously needs
network. So for some reason, wants constraints are being honored too
strictly.

can you tell me what version of Nautilus this is that is buggy? I could

[Bug 379019] Re: loading subtitles resets the movie

2014-07-29 Thread Edward Donovan
Ah! No, not on my system, at least. Ubuntu 14.04, with all current
updates. totem is 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 .

Totem hung on me while I was testing, but that seemed related to opening
a movie while another instance was running. I don't have time to go
after that one right now! But nothing bad appeared at all related to
loading subtitles.

Tested it on two movies. Loading a new sub file did not reset or change
the point in the movie at all. Looks fixed here. Thanks for raising
the question.

2013-12-27 Thread Edward Donovan
This report was already getting too big for Launchpad to handle quickly,
and is all marked fixed. In these cases I'm usually advised to leave
the closed report as it is, and handle the new occurrence with the new
bug. You can certainly put a link to this bug, there, for informational
purposes. Maybe I can get to that.

Thanks!

2013-11-15 Thread John Edward Reed
Thank you. Your instructions have fixed the problem.

First I executed

/sudo apt-get clean/

Then I ran the software updater. It failed again:

The package system is broken

If you are using third party repositories then disable them, since
they are a common source of problems.
Now run the following command in a terminal: apt-get install -f

Details:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

nautilus-sendto-empathy: Depends: libgudev-1.0-0 (= 147) but
1:175-0ubuntu9.4 is installed
  Depends: empathy-common (=
3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1) but 3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1.1 is installed

But this time when I ran /apt-get install -f/ the problem was fixed:

[Bug 1183146] [NEW] brasero crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_is_a()

2013-05-22 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

Perhaps the retracer can tell if this is a dupe. It may be the same as
bug 1176269, that I reported. But the retracer failed on that one. I'm
not sure if it's having problems, or if there's something non-standard
in this system's coredumps, or what. The circumstances were different
for this crash, anyway.

I was setting up an audio CD to burn. I think the crash came as I was
dragging some tracks into a different order, but I can't remember for
sure. Thanks.

[Bug 1128100] Re: Inconsistencies between gedit and the Unity dock

2013-02-17 Thread Edward Donovan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1027584 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1027584

Hi John, thanks for the report. You've found a bug that's also been
reported at bug 1027584. It's fixed in newer release of Ubuntu.
Looking at that page, I'm not quite sure if or when it'd going to get
into Precise. But you can fix it on your machine pretty easily.

Those menu items, called quicklists in Unity, are defined in

  /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop

which belongs to gedit. Here's the relevant text from that file, on my
machine:

[Desktop Action Window]
Name=Open a New Window
Exec=gedit --new-window
OnlyShowIn=Unity;

[Desktop Action Document]
Name=Open a New Document
Exec=gedit --new-document
OnlyShowIn=Unity;

In the 12.04 version, it's gedit --new-window in both cases, instead
of gedit --new-document where it should be.

Until you get the fix, by update or upgrade, you can override the system
gedit.desktop file, with one for your user account, as
~/.local/share/applications/gedit.desktop. You can copy the system one
there, then edit it.

You'll probably want to keep an eye for the eventual update, and remove
your local gedit.desktop, when it comes, or, if you have more changes
you want to keep there, at least keep an eye for changes in the system
one.

And I'm gonna mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 1027584. I'll
subscribe to this, so you can keep posting here, if you want some more
help with a workaround, or on the main bug if you have more general
questions.

Hope this helps some. :)

[Bug 1118006] [NEW] brasero crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_loop_unref()

2013-02-06 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

Brasero had copied a DVD to an image file, and was preparing to write
the image. I had switched in the blank disc, but apparently it hadn't
written anything yet, as the disc is still blank. A couple of
unnecessary prompts came up when the blank disc was loaded. (That's a
bug that I haven't found nor filed yet. :) I hit escape a few times to
clear those away. A couple escape presses probably went to the brasero
window, and it crashed right after that.

So that's the only cause I can guess. That might make this a dupe of
bug 998389, if hitting Esc is equivalent to clicking the close button,
at that point.

Thanks!

[Bug 1108510] [NEW] xchat-gnome crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_icon_theme_lookup_by_gicon()

2013-01-28 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

This is probably a dupe of bug 1107226, which I recently filed. I want
to see if the stacktrace comes out any different. Because this one
occurred right after I tried to open the 'File Transfers' window, from
the main menu. That wasn't the case in that other crash.

Here is the relevant section from .xsession-errors:

(xchat-gnome:28975): Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property:
TopicLabel.creation-function
(xchat-gnome:28975): Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property:
ConversationPanel.creation-function
(xchat-gnome:28975): Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property:

(xchat-gnome:28975): Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property: FindBar.creation-function
(xchat-gnome:28975): Gtk-WARNING **: Unknown property:
StatusBar.creation-function

I can't tell if that directly proceeded the crash.

Thanks.

[Bug 1107226] [NEW] xchat-gnome crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_icon_theme_lookup_by_gicon()

2013-01-27 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

Perhaps a dupe of bug 562753, or bug 302902. I'd like to see what the
retracer thinks about that. (Possibly they should be duped together,
themselves.)

Those older bugs are described as happening on every DCC transfer.
That's not the case for me, this is very rare, among lots of DCC
transfers.

Thanks.

[Bug 1103781] [NEW] nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2013-01-23 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

Lots of nautilus crashes lately, for me, in Raring. Like bug 1101965
and bug 1101985. This appears to be a separate point in the code, but
we'll see.

I removed .xsession-errors, because it had directory and other info from
my machine. The possibly relevant part was the last two lines:

(process:10001): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size
== 0' failed
(nautilus:8538): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

I'm not sure if these came right at the time of the crash.

Thanks.

- My home partition had recently filled up, by accident, and the Xsession-
- errors file shows some problem messages following that. But several
- gigs of space were available again by the time this crash happened.
+ Happened again, same directory. There are 9000+ files and dirs under
+ this directory. Maybe nautilus is barfing on that?

  Thanks.

[Bug 1098301] [NEW] brasero crashed with SIGSEGV in brasero_task_ctx_report_progress()

2013-01-10 Thread Edward Donovan
Public bug reported:

When Brasero crashed, the last message I had noticed was Finalizing
disc. The disc turned out to have been successfully burned, but maybe
that's evident if this function comes after burning is done.

LP suggested bug 864216 as a possible dupe -- not exactly the same
function so I filed this separately. I don't know enough to judge if
might end up being a dupe.

Thanks.

[Bug 1085520] [NEW] brasero won't burn data cd or iso

2012-12-01 Thread Edward
Public bug reported:

Evry time I have ever used Brasero to burn an ISO I have always has to
do again using K3B. Brasero never seemed to work. Today I just wanted to
make a data cd, and Brasero didn't work for that either. Here is an
error log file. This is on Lucid, though so maybe when I get a chance I
will try it on a newer distro version. Thing is, though, this even
happened when Lucid was being supported. Maybe I should have r eported
it then.

[Bug 1083954] Re: Failed to download package files Check your Internet connection.

2012-11-29 Thread Edward Donovan
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the
support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are
uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find help with your problem in
the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/
or asking at http://askubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org. For help
on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1058114] Re: Evince crashes when printing specific files

2012-10-09 Thread Edward Donovan
Hi Charis -

Will you please test these files again, with an up-to-date Quantal? New
enough, at least, to have the updated cairo packages, version
1.12.2-1ubuntu2. Bug 1030357 was similar, and the upstream patches that
were picked, to fix that, may have fixed these problems, too.

I could never reproduce a crash with these PDFs, but I did see the
rendering problems. They render fine in my evince, with the updated
cairo libs.

I'll mark the bug incomplete, 'til we find out.

Thanks!

[Bug 1061660] Re: Screen is black, and a screen does not appear.

2012-10-04 Thread Edward Donovan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1060025] Re: no menu indicators next to Ubuntu Desktop on indications panel

2012-10-03 Thread Edward Donovan
Hi -

Nautilus manages the desktop background, and provides those menus.
Nautilus in quantal right now is having some crashes. Maybe that's
what's causing this problem for you. When you see this behavior, try
right-clicking on the desktop. If no menu appears, nautilus isn't
running. Then open a nautilus window, and nautilus should take over the
desktop again. Even when you close that window, you should see the
menus you're asking about. (Until it crashes again, after a while.)

Yes, gtk+2.0 2.24.13-0ubuntu2 is meant to fix this. It's hard to
reverse a Fix Released, so I won't mark it yet. But it should be fixed
in that version. Thanks.

Ugh, I guess I don't have privileges to really remove that component,
since it has a milestone. It just left a milestone attached to Ubuntu.
I'll put glib back to make less of a mess, but if someone with
privileges wants to remove it all, it'd neater. Sorry thanks.
